Though Gary Gygax did a lot of the setup for the D&D game, it was Dave Arneson that wrote many of the early adventure modules, particularly the B and X series.

  6. Money Talks on Tragedy, Media and Marketing · · Score: 1

It was striking to realize that none of CNN's panelists came close to the simple truth: media are market-driven, not idea-substance-or-content driven.

Do you think CNN will admit that? The media loves its image of brave reporters going in to find the story that no one else will, but it all boils down to one thing: money. Remember, media (electrronic, dead-tree or otherwise) is a business like any other, out to maximize profit.

More viewers for CNN will mean more money for ads, cable fees, etc. So they'll get the sensational, demographically correct stories to attract them.

    Thousands? That's a small percentage.

Hmmm, you didn't read my post.

As you might infer, I use it to play games. Games are getting to the point where they require Pentium II's. When that happens, I can no longer use the box.

I don't word process either, I write letters with old-fashioned pen and paper.

  11. Yes, abillion served on One Billion Computers Sold Worldwide · · Score: 4, Insightful

But computers these days are almost a disposable item. A PC I bought in 1998 is on the verge of obsolescence, only 4 years later. Much new software is made for the processor (233 MHz Pentium) or higher. Any further power needs, and my PC won't be able to handle the software. Either I must upgrade it or replace it. And replacing means an artifially high number sold, IMHO.

Other consumer electronics like TV's and VCR's have a much longer life expectancy.

What matters more is what percentage of the units are still running today.

Sort of like the arcade games of old, they were simple but blazingly addictive. However, this new generation of games has the advantages of portability and not having to shovel quarters into them.

This looks like a lot of fun. Too bad it's only in Japan right now.

The one who should be angry is General Motors. They're the ones being told to screw off.
