I find it especially sad that what is a really good depiction of what life was really like at that time is being "cleansed" so that we can all pretend that there wasn't racial tension in the South at that time.
Being a St. Louis-an, I have to object to the characterization that the book was set in the "south". At the time of the books writing, St. Louis had the same national importance of Chicago. They traded places when train traffic eclipsed river traffic in the national economy. If it helps, think of the book as being set in the suburbs of Chicago to put it in proper context. Deep south this is not.
It adds nothing and only detracts from the real message.
Wait a minute. Huckleberry Finn is a story about an escaped slave, and a boy who risked his life and freedom to help him. He was a slave because people thought he was less than human. Huck was at risk because he treated Jim like he was human. "Slave" is not dehumanizing. "Nigger" is. Just like "raghead", "paki", or any of the other words we use to rob people of their humanity so that we can do inhuman things to them. Without dehumanizing Jim, we do not see the real story - how Huck is struggling to make his world view match what his eyes see. This is the only reason he helps Jim in the first place.
This article is about you. I'd hate to burst that inflated ego bubble around you, but those technical "savants" are not gifted - they are deficient. If you were *really* smart you'd be an executive. The fact is that you are a technical savant precisely because you are a social idiot, as evidenced by the tripe above. *Really* smart people are perfectly capable of doing your job, provided commensurate study and training. But they don't have to - they hired you to do it while they play golf. Sucker.
Speaking as someone who actually got fired for being #3, I never make the mistake of assuming I'm smarter than the people I work for. I thought my boss was a complete idiot, right until he walked me out the door. Then I learned who the stupid one was.
And your point is? If we paid them a living wage to begin with, they would not need government assistance. The buying power of minimum wage is steadily dropping.
What? Historically, sure. But not now.
Your average working poor family receives a net subsidy from the federal government, and doesn't pay any income taxes at all. Look up the EITC and CTC.
In 1970, a poor family with two kids paid a combined 8.5% of their income toward income tax and payroll tax (i.e. medicare/social security). In 2002 they paid a total of -15.6% of their income in taxes.
This may be true. However, due to wage stagnation since Reagan took office, the buying power of that family has steadily declined (greater than the 23% discrepancy you describe). In short, since we have transferred all of that wealth to the upper classes, and we have consistently eroded the buying power of the lower classes, they need more help. DURRRR NUMBERS ARE RELATIVE DURRR.
Oh it is, really. You can keep claiming the earth is flat if you like - humanity will be entertained by anecdotes of you a couple hundred years from now.
Daily consumers of MSNBC and public broadcasting (NPR and PBS) were higher (34 points and 25 points respectively) in believing that it was proven that the US Chamber of Commerce was spending money raised from foreign sources to support Republican candidates.
The US Chamber of Commerce has responded to this post in a statement to the Politico's Ben Smith. The Chamber's Tita Freeman did not dispute that the Chamber's 501(c)(6) organization running attack ads receives foreign funds, and simply claimed, "We have a system in place" to prevent foreign funding for the Chamber's "political activities."
So by the Chamber's own admission, they were receiving foreign funds, and they were supporting Republican candidates. I'd have to be some kind of misinformed idiot to consider that proof. I also own a bridge in Brooklyn.
For the congressional data, we coded all citations that occurred during the period Jan. 1, 1993 to December 31, 2002
Their methodology is totally bunk. You can't count the number of think-tank references in media, and then compare them to the average "liberalness" index of a congressman during the "republican revolution" and get meaningful data. This is complete fiction. Of course, I didn't need to read their methodology to do that - any study that labels Drudge as "centrist" is seriously flawed.
Why is that algorithm a bad idea? It is certainly safer than using the same password for both. Bonus points if you add other algorithmic goodness (capitalize the 2nd vowel in the site name, replace the third letter with a number, etc...).
Look, I need a password to log into my bank. My newspaper. My email. My blog. My kid's school. I actively use dozens of passwords. Algorithms like this are certainly no worse than writing everything down, and are certainly better than using the same password for everything.
Except that is not what they did. They passed a tax on everybody. And then they passed a tax credit that you can exercise if you buy health insurance. Works just like the mortgage deduction. If you want to seriously argue that Congress does not have the authority to pass new taxes, please be my guest...
I have heard pediatric neurologists argue that it should be nine months. It's not murder until the baby is nine months old, because until that point it is not fully human. Personally, I think birth is a good cut-off point. 2nd trimester is even better - no chance of a mistake there.
If you expect us to treat your beliefs seriously, you need to do the same to us.
Perhaps you missed the "PC" part of PC Gamer. Reviews on the PS3 do not apply to the PC; they are different games. None of the issues you describe exist on the PC version.
PC Gamer has their own scale, analogous to letter grades: less than 60% = complete failure. 60-70% = has serious issues. 70-80% = fans of the genre may enjoy it, but has issues. 80-90% = solid game. > 90% editors choice, great game, you should love it.
You are reading the wrong sources then. PCGamer gave Call of Duty: Black Ops a 67% - a "do not buy even if you are a fan of the genre" review. (Personally, I think that score is too low - but the reviewer pointed out several of the games serious flaws that I missed in all of the shiny.) Every other reviewer out there tried to go down on the box.
Out of all of games journalism, I've found them to be pretty reliable.
I don't think you understand how the Republican primaries work: unlike Democrat primaries/caucuses, Republican primaries are winner-take-all. Palin currently leads all other Republicans in primary polling. As it stands today, she has a better than even chance of being the Republican candidate for president. If I had to call it today, I'd say she will win the nomination, and then go on to lose the general - which is exactly what she wants. She will make history as the first female candidate for President (which might just make Hillary's head explode), and her career will get a huge boost from the publicity.

This was one guy, or at worst one company. There is no such thing as "Big Brother". Lay off the Glen Beck.
If I was an English teacher, I would never write anything down - ever - just because of assholes like me. :)
Well done sir. Kudos in lieu of mod points.

I asked because I looked, and could not find it. I call bullshit.

Also, rule 2.
It happened when companies became investments rather than business. Privately held companies do not have to deal with this BS.
They are all CORPORATE news outlets. Also, water is wet.

My four year old played with me all weekend. I've got a quarry started, digging top down. He insists on holding down the mouse as I dig down.
