    The atmosphere tends to absorb stuff with energy levels equal to or greater than X-rays. That even extends downwards a bit into UV.

    There's also an article in this month's Scientific American about how cosmic ray absorption might be triggering lightning cascades.

    ...but you didn't say that you tried to use it again. Did you try it? If not, do it.

    My 128MB OTi drive's USB plug is loose, and so is the plastic shell. But the darn thing still works, and it's sitting in my pocket right now.

    I tried it...it runs under WINE, albiet not very well. (The font makes some stuff unreadable.)

    It's enough for me to get my XP box working again.

    I can't see that as helping much...it would seem to me to open the gates for people to crawl through places like WhyNot.net and newsgroups watching for people to RFC their ideas, and patent them.

    ...from an AutoREALMS developer (project admin?) asking me to help with their port from Delphi to C++/wxWidgets.

    I'll probably help out, as soon as I finish getting the new version of my other project to a release state. (Work on which will resume as soon as it's no longer crunch time at work.)

    When I bought my first 3D accelerator and installed it, my mom shouted over to me, "No Quake!"

    Went for months without it. Then I started beta-testing for QuakeForge. She allowed that, since it was "productive."

    No kidding. People got way to involved with MUDS.

    The BBS I'm on dropped MajorMUD very shortly after a couple customers got in an major physical fight when one killed the other's high-level character.

    If you want more than five PCI slots, you need a PCI-PCI bridge on the board. PCI cards can be electrically noisy on the bus.

    Or so I've read, anyway. Studying electronic technologies is my hobby, not my job. So consider the source.

    You mean excommunication? I'm not up to speed on the details of Christianity, but I don't know of anyone but the Catholic Church who has a mechanism for excommunicating members. Christianity is a fragmented religion with no corporeal governing body with that power.

    As for athiests, they're frequently treated like anyone else. I should know, because I was one for a while.

    Sure, it's been done. But we're certainly not at the limits of the technology.

    For mostly permanent links, such as between planets and fixed-orbit relay stations, I'd think investment in better communications protocol would be useful.

    The better the communications protocol, the cheaper it will be to maintain the connection, in power costs for transmission, slightly less-strict aiming requirements, etc. A good initial investment on protocol design can mean less investment is required in continual expenses.

    remember word viewer embedding itself to browser?

    It still does. Which is annoying, because you can't, for example, toggle the display of formatting characters. An awful lot of people on campus choose to publish syllabi and other documents in Word format, leaving formatting characters enabled.

    Also, IE's frames printing functionality absolutely sucks. For a lot of the web-based applications here, you have to right-click on the frame you want in order to print it. You can't do that with word viewer, and it always gets loaded in a frame...
