I have tried Ubuntu, but none of the others you mentioned. I switched to OpenSUSE because they have the best hardware support. For an old machine like that you should look at Linux mint xfce edition, or possbily something like puppy linux, run it off a CD to test.
I'm always amazed by how many companies don't leverage these free (included w/ windows) tools. And pay someone to run around like a chicken with their head cut off, fixing symptoms here and there.
Yes, they are. Another option I used for awhile was as simple script that checked my IP and wrote it two an unlinked page on my nearlyfreespeech site. Their hosting is super cheap, so it barely cost anything.
Whenever my IP changed, I could just check that page to get the new one.
You do need to request a RSA key to allow scripts to access your nearlyfreespeech account.
Very interesting, I'm glad there is no Monopoly Gov for the world. It's nice to see the things other governments consider important vs what our gov. considers important.
on a side note, FUCK this new Slashdot layout. It works ok most of the time, but it has some serious issues. Every time I try to select your links to copy them, the damn thing scrolls to the top parent comment. It does similar stuff trying to edit this comment.
I agree, last year I had to decide between driving a bit over 1k miles, a 15 or 16 hour trip or longer w/ small children.:(
For a family of 6 it was about $1k cheaper to driver vs flying. My calculations included car rental and extra time staying in Motels for driving.
In hindsight I might have broke even considering I would have missed less work, the kids would have missed less school, and I would not have had to drive across Kansas. However, I did not have to worry about my super cheap tickets getting me bumped and missing the wedding I was attending. I did not need to worry about a Freedom Fondle, and I'm sure the airlines would have gouged an extra couple hundred.

You can climb very high, but it is difficult. Our point is that it is even more difficult to fall far if you start high. It happens, but you really have to work at it.
I've heard of Monsanta suing farmers who cull the good (roundup) fertalized seed from fields that were cross pollinated. I have not heard of them intentionally spraying farmers fields. I would like a citation.
yeah, all my old iso's are less then 800 MB, so when I use 7zip to empty them and fill them with my backup content I am limited in scope. Many of the new ISO's I download are over 2GB, that give me much more room when I empty them w/ 7zip and reuse them to store my own content.
not a bill, a court decision, probably on it's way to the supreme court.
It would take legislation to change this even if it should already be different based on any reasonable reading of the constitution.
By the way, that sheriff is an idiot, the court did not say anything turned up by an illegal search would be admitted, they just said you shouldn't resist. My normal policy is don't argue with cops, argue with judges, so I can see his point. It doesn't really change anything. Look at any no knock mistake that resulted in police injury or death. The people doing the shooting always go to jail. While the police can kill people during oops raids and have very little repercussions. I'm kind of glad this is so out in the open. Now maybe we can hope for a legislative fix.
true...:(

fucked up shit...
Ask me how I know you have never used OpenSUSE.

I think he was talking about the situation in the US. In my area, if you can even catch a bus, it can easily quintuple the trip time.

of course, that's true for everyone except (myself, my son, my husband, my daughter, my cousin, my idol, the Donald)...

I wish it was only one book, they leave 12 different editions on my porch every year.

Isn't that illegal...
