The article is very clear that digital film production creates much more data!
Directors no longer need to husband expensive film stock so they often leave camera rolling while they work out scenes. This is not necessarily garbage footage that can be discarded. Some of this material will be valuable to film historians and also financially valuable as it can be filler for the "extras" that are now included on DVDs.
Digital production creates a much larger set of data that needs to be preserved and updated.
Your are neglecting the cost of replication. That is one of the factors in the article.
This is not trivial. Codecs and hardware change. To preserve a digital copy of a film requires a paid employee to watch for changes in codecs and hardware. Then the production company must purchase a copy of the license to any new codecs. Then someone has to go back into the ever-growing vault of films with many multiples of data larger than film stock (that's also in the article) and basically re-create the Y2K fix again.
Oh, yeah, it doesn't stop there.
What happens when a company goes bust and their codecs are not updated?
I agree with you completely, but you left something out.
I don't need an electrical outlet or batteries to read the dead-tree edition of a book. I can just open the blinds or, heaven forbid, go out into the bright sunlight.
Remember the old question: what ten books would you take to a deserted island? You better make sure they are dead-tree editions.:)
The major components of a theater will be the visual, audio, and visceral experience, with a good source material. Movies should draw you in not just emotionally with their stories, but physically with their presentation. (emphasis mine)
Use it to fund research centers at schools; they're relatively cheap, and the research then spreads from there, rather than being locked up in patents.
Lately schools have picked up the patent bug themselves. A lot of schools have a lot of patents.
That's part of it, but you're still more likely to die in a bus or taxi accident,
I don't know about this. Buses are safer by virtue of their size if nothing else. Unless they careen over an embankment or bridge, or get hit by a train, they are pretty safe. I have read about a lot of bus accidents over the years. Few have had fatalities.
Taxis I can agree with you on. They are nothing but cars anyway.
Given that this is Slashdot a car analogy is in order.
Linux is a Ferrari. It requires a real driver.
Mac is like a Toyota. A good, solid vehicle. Dependable and long lasting. Just don't expect to do any internal work on it like my dad used to do when I was a kid.
Windoze is like a Ford Pinto. It'll get you to work and back home again, just don't expect it to have any real power.
The Linux community must get away from trying to be Ford or GM (Genetically Modified?). Linux offers POWER! No apologies POWER! It ain't for your gran'ma.
Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition.
I think this is a phrase that originated in the military during WWII (The Great Patriotic War, to the Soviets).
SNAFU
Situation Normal, All Fucked Up.
I think this one originated in the military around the time of the Korean War or Vietnam.
There are still plenty of would-be dictators and totalitarian empire builders out there, most of whom have been held in check for fear of reprisal from the United States and its allies.
Sir, I realise that your post was in jest; however, I would like suggest an easy alternative.
We should just mark all patriotic Am3rican$ with a simple mark. Something simple like...oh, I dunno', maybe a six, three score, and six.
Without this mark, no one would be allowed to travel. Besides curtailing the nefarious schemes of terrorists it would also help with the large immigration problem. In time, as the populace surrendered to the most excellent goals of this process, it could easily be extended to other activities such as the buying and selling of goods.
Here in the US we value the ability to kill someone. We still have that "Wild West" attitude. Two days ago, a child shot four people and committed suicide. Yesterday another child was arrested for allegedly planning a "Columbine" style rampage. We don't care about weapons, just don't show any titties and you'll do just fine.
In England the emphasis is different. Titties are quite nice.:) Violence is not!
I have a DVD of "Goldfinger". In the director commentary a story is told of trying to satisfy the censors in England and the US simultaneously. It's a really funny story. The English censors wanted to tone down the violence and didn't care about naked flesh being displayed. The US censors objected to naked flesh and were unfazed about the violence. The poor director and editor had to accomodate both contradictory requirements before they could distribute their movie.
Danger! Will Robinson! Linux boxen tend to be used far longer than Windoze boxen.
Purely anectdotal, but I see a LOT of Linux boxen that are very old running not so old Linux kernels.
This means, over a period of time, you have a greater chance of creating a NEW Linux only legacy support issue with newer kernels running on old machines.
This should not stop progress, but it is something that should be recognized up front.
Several of the researchers, including Stamler, have consulting and/or equity relationships with Nitrox/N30, a company developing nitric oxide based therapies.
I only post this because I have heard so much over the decades about how blood transfusions have saved lives. Now I read this and have to wonder. My skepticism is tempered, but still present.
Whether any of us agree or not, this is a legitimate argument. He is plainly stating that as a member of "the general public" he is has *NOT* accepted either of the current HD disk formats. He then makes a few more statements. None of those statements is flamebait either.
I hope this was a mistake. I know I've screwed up and hit the wrong selection when modding.
Someone with mod points please override the "Flamebait" moderation.
If you draw your images on paper, then scan them into your computer, you get a lot of versatility using Photoshop or the GIMP. For instance, you can erase pencil smudges, inking mistakes, or just change your mind and flip an image. Then you can scan your lettering into your computer and add then in the appropriate places using layers. Once that is done you can then color the image.
Now all you have to do is resize the image to fit comfortably in a browser and save it as a.JPG, or.GIF, or whatever.
All of the above is easily done within Photoshop or the GIMP.
You can probably do all of the above with your listed programs as well, but can you also scan an image that is 10 inches by fourteen inches on your 8.5 inch by 11 inch scanner twice in overlapping patterns, then place one image over the other to recreate the entire original?
Before my Dish HD receiver died on me two weeks ago I actually watched (GAWD, I'm ashamed to admit it) Enterprise. There I said it. I stopped watching movies on Starz just to watch Bladerunner and 2001: A Space Odyssey over and over. I even watched The Good American and World's Fastest Indian over and over. Not to mention things like Smallville which I had never watched before. Don't get me started on ESPNHD and Monday Night Football and DiscoveryHD and Planet Earth.
So, yeah, High Definition can make bad stuff, good and great stuff even better.
Now, you may not be impressed with High Definition because maybe you saw it on the wrong TV. I was out last weekend and saw some LCDs displaying some college football games. What a waste. LCD just doesn't have the contrast to show High Definition correctly.
If your only experience with High Definition is through LCD try to catch it on a projection TV or Plasma. Just don't buy the Plasma if you watch channels that put their logo on the screen for a prolonged time. Plasma TVs will burn that image PERMANENTLY into their screens.
Thank you for the suggestion. This would probably work with most people but my wife really HATES video games. I've tried to involve her in many games over the years but she has no interest in any style computer game. She and I grew up with family board games like "Monopoly" and that's what she likes. I still like "Monopoly" too, but I also like my electronic games.
Yeah, I really don't understand the mentality in the game world of not being in first place means you're a failure.
I think it's because the video game industry is very new and the rapid fall of one time industry titan Atari is still on many minds. Then you add the rapid decline of Nintendo after the success of Sega and Sony and people are ready to jump to conclusions.
I do it too. I'm just as guilty of thinking Nintendo was dead in the water after the rise of the PlayStation. I'm VERY impressed by the way they have managed to bail out the water and set the ship right. I want a Wii so bad! But unfortunately I bought an X-Box 360 and now I don't have a good reason to give to the wife to bring yet another game system into the house.:(
I wish I had mod points to give you. That would be plus one informative.
In reading about people like Albert Einstein and Adolph Hitler I come across a mention of them attending "gymnasium". I know it isn't what I call "gymnasium" here in the US, but until now I never knew what it meant to the writers.
If I am paying for television, I will not tolerate commercials!
That's why I no longer watch AMC or Bravo. My viewing has switched to TCM in place of those two channels which I used to enjoy. "The Godfather" trilogy, and Hitchcock be damned. I'd rather watch "Million Dollar Mermaid" or "The Big Sleep" uncut without commercial interruption.
C'mon moderators! That's FUNNY even if you haven't seen the movie.

It's a proposal, in .PDF form, to create a new Star Trek series based, loosely, on the Original Series, but with a new mystery added to it.
