  1. Apple's Cash Reserves on Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple · · Score: 1
An executive from the Warner Music Group is making threats, Apple could drop WMG or let WMG walk and when WMG's share price drops... Apple buys WMG.

WMG's market cap is currently $2.75B. Apple could afford a hostile stock take over using cash reserves and still have enough left over to possibly buy the EMI group ($3.4B)

  2. Trouble at work, trouble with law on Google Prefetching for Mozilla Browsers · · Score: 4, Interesting

Not only could this get you in trouble by inadvertently downloading porn at work, but you could download even more incriminating things.

Say for example you were searching for info on that convicted sex offender that moved into your neighborhood or searching for news on terrorist attacks. Prefetching could potentially have your computer downloading things you wouldn't otherwise download and that could get you in real trouble.

  3. Ultra-Intrusive defacements on New Ultra-Intrusive Pop-up Ads Introduced · · Score: 1

This gives site defacers some heavy ammo. Imagine the ruckus that would ensue if someone broke into amazon's site and made a few links take over customers' screens with goatse.cx.

  4. Give professors control of net access on Professors vs. WiFi · · Score: 1

There's already been one technolgy based solution to this problem described but there is a ready made solution for schools that either don't want to or don't have the resources to roll their own. http://www.newburynetworks.com has a product that can allow/disallow different levels of network access depending on your physical location. And of course it runs on Linux.

  5. If you want to help the artist buy a shirt on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 1

Most of the times concerts are paid for by the record company as a way of promoting a CD release. Thus the cost comes out of the promotion budget and is almost always recoupable against the artist. The notion that artists make a lot of money from touring is ridiculous. While a greater number of tours make a profit for artists than CD releases, the majority of tours loose money (the record companies hope that they can get more CD sales via tours and recoup again...).

Merchandising and publishing are the two aspects of the music business that record companies have the least amount of fingers in the pie. (They still have some though) Money from merchandising and publishing is usually on a per item basis so there's no recouping going on and the merchandisers and publishers float the risk. Buy a t-shirt and when available a songbook from the artist. Much more money will go to them that way. Perhaps if enough people buy and wear a shirt (free advertising, think of the millions of Metallica shirts in the world) CD sales could go up to the point that those too become profitable.

  6. already happening minus the head wounds on Think And Click · · Score: 1

Their has already been progress in this area sans head wounds. Instead of jacking your head full of wires, sensors detect the electric activity of the brain through the scalp. The USAF was experimenting with flying planes this way but gave up after a few very promising results concluding that it would take too long to train pilots in this manner to be effective. There was also a few PBS specials about this last year. http://www.pbs.org/saf/1107/resources/resources-5. htm RHh "Moon's milk spills from my unquiet skull" -Coil

  7. Shorten and RAR for Pro MP3 for rec. on Non-MP3 Codecs? · · Score: 1

When working on music projects that require either the sending of high quality samples over the internet or if I need to fit them all on one CD I use Shorten or RAR. Shorten is widely used and RAR can be easily obtained for just about every platform. RAR doubles as pretty decent replacement for zip when it comes to compressing non-audio files as well. The multi-media function it uses also compresses the heck out of bit-map and TIFF images. The down side is that you can't play a rar compressed audio file.

For recreation purposes such as using my laptop to listen to music while riding on a train or plane I prefer MP3. The environment is noisy enough that I don't mind or notice the lack of quality. That kid screaming and kicking my seat is much more of an issue. I would most likely use ogg over mp3 but ogg isn't yet incorporated into iTunes (my prefered player, ok it has more to do with my iPod).

  8. Not like Variable bit-rate on New Sampling Techniques Make Up For Lost Data · · Score: 2, Informative

The variable bit-rate in MP3 compression does not
alter the amount of time between each sample. In
terms of sampling frequency MP3, even VBR is still
uniform, uniform as in time. VBR changes how many
bits are in a sample, not the time between samples.

If he started at 19 with no experience it is not unlikely that the original pay was closer to $20k. Which would leave him at about 100k now. Nothing to sneeze at. If he played his finances right he could retire early. Since that would be possible I suggest getting the CS degree only if there is a desire to continue in the field for enjoyment.

  10. CompUSA is sometimes bad. new managers rock! on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

Depends on which store. I bought an iBook from one store only to get home open it up andd find that it was a previously opened box that was disguised as new, that several pixels on the screen were bad and that it was the only one they had. So I had to go to another CompUSA on about 20 miles away. This second CompUSA had a new assistant manager who appologized, gave me a free case and a replacement for the ibook as well as a discount on the 3 year warranty. Note that usually the three year warranty they offer is a one-time replacement warranty. They don't have to fix your machine but they should replace it with one of the same model and if that model is no longer available you are supposed to get the next model up that they have in stock.

  11. Re:Caveat Emptor on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

Apple still provides free support for the first 3 months you own the product (their warranty lasts even longer). Most stores give you 2 weeks to return a product. Most blatant defects can be found within 2 weeks and if you take a few hours to stress your purchase you can usually find the issues that need the vendor support. Warranty and support are two different issues joined at the hip of customer satisfaction.

  12. TuneTracker - BeOS on Professional Audio on Linux? · · Score: 1

If he is working at a radio station he might wan to check out TuneTracker at LeBuzz It does just about everything other radio automation software does but for only about $100US. Yes, it runs on BeOS. Possibly the only professional audio software still available on that platform. It really pissed me off the way software companies said "no release till more soundcard drivers" and sound card companies said "no drivers unitll more audio software" Echo was the last chance, they falt out said they would deliver drivers in their advertisements in 2000. They lied, stalled and then said "no". These drivers were probaly the single largest thing keeping BeOS from actually hitting pro audio outside the embedded and automation markets.

  13. Re:Copy protection is as much law as it is tech on CD Copy Protection Head Speaks · · Score: 1

Going from digital out to digital does not circumvent the copy protection as this copy protection does not and was not built to operate on the digital outs of a player. This technology addresses the ability to see the disc TOC.

If you do use the digital out to digital in method and you did not circumvent any copy protection that may be in place there (such as is present in many DAT machines) you are not violating the DMCA.
If you send a copy of your newly created digital file to a friend then you are still technically guilty of unlicensed distribution.

Damn, this anon coward should go ahead and register...
