Besides internet browsers, there is another popular program that encourages people to upgrade: that is Windows. I tried installing windowsXP on my cyrix 6x86 166mhz and it crawled. Even though I only had 32mb of ram I still expected better performance than this. I upgraded my pc to a p4 2ghz with 512mb ddrdram and windows was still incredibly slow. I sold my pc and bought a g4 MacPC and now OS X-windows runs great. That is why I like Apple brand pc's because the mips g4 processor is alot faster than intel or cyrix chips. I will be using my mac for a long time without having to upgrade. Windows is one of the main reasons people still need to buy fast cpu's. Games are also a problem but if you want to play video games you can buy a video came system like atari jaguar.
It's editors like you that make me happy I don't pay for any slashdot subscriptions. Maybe when you stop insulting your readers more people might actually be interested in giving money to you guys.
I downloaded unreal tournament 2003 demo off of kazaa (using kazaa lite). I wouldn't have been able to get it off any of the commercial servers as there is alot of traffic on them from eager unreal fans. P2P really is the future for downloading large files, it's to bad USC is trying to keep its students back in the stone age.
AOL is one of the worst companies when it comes to intrusive ads... Just look what they did with netscape, forcing them to remove the ad-removal options. Unless the united IM supports ads that aol can profit from they will never get on board.
winXP uses the ntfs file system, while it might take longer to defragment, its almost unneccesary. Even with heavy use you would only need to defrag every few months at most.
decent doesn't include a monitor, a keyboard, and probably alot of other things you need. If you get a monitor with that mac the price is going to jump a good 400$. Also, 128mb is not enough to run OS X properly. Getting an extra 128 or 256mb of ram is going to cost a boat load if you get it from apple (for some reason their memory prices are a few years out of date).
I find it odd that mac hasn't had more acceptance in business as OS X is now well supported and apple seems to have shifted from it's 'colourful' looking green and pink computers to more conservative silver colors more appropriate for a corporate environment. Then again the cost of a good linux based system could easily be 1/3 of that of a good mac system that can run OS X.
yep, I am certain there is some bias here. As a note, real magazines and newspapers point out when they are involved with something they are coverering (eg. a magazine talking about their parent companies stock, will point out they are owned by the company in the feature)
ah I didn't know it was standard, I used lame with a windows frontend (think its razor lame or something like that), and I only enabled the 16000hz lowpass when I was incoding at 128k or less.
I forgot to mention something. Alot of encoders have the option of using a lowpass filter at around 16000hz to get rid of high treble frequencies so that mp3's at lower bit rates (like 128k) sound better. In this case the treble wouldn't sound as crisp. It actually COULD be you, as ear damage begins with a loss in the ability to hear high frequencies. It's possible if you did have ear damage that you might not notice how much 128k mp3's mess up those high frequencies.
it's not you, but it's likely your sound system. For instance, listen to 128k mp3's on 10$ headphones and you won't notice the compression, listen to it on 200$ sennheisers with a much larger range of frequencies and you WILL notice the compression. 128k mp3 compression totally messes up the high end frequencies, and in some cases, the stereo field.

Yes that's why I come to slashdot.org, for pure unbiased reviews of windows! *snicker*
well it takes 25 seconds to boot windows, and once I'm at the login screen and enter my password and press enter I would say it takes about 8 seconds before everything is ready for action (that includes loading startup programs, etc...)
I rarely reboot the computer, maybe every 2 or 3 weeks and thats normally when I am installing some sort of software. Windows XP runs well once you have it set up properly.
maybe they want to work for one of the worlds biggest software companies and make a good salary? Have you checked the job market lately? Nobody with half a brain would turn down a job offer like this.
This was not a troll, I think that people should donate systems they are not using instead of destroying them! Doesn't that sounds logical? Shouldn't we care about other people?
When Eric S. Raymond tried to replace the Linux kernel's configuration system with "something better", he got booed off the stage.
Yet another thing to add to my list of "and people wounder why linux is not being readily accepted by everyone" items. I mean, come on, the guy just wanted to help make things better! Getting booed off the stage hurts!
Thats too bad that it looks like win98, if they want windows converts it's going to have to look like winXP.
I believe all the spam that congress receives should be taken seriously, because we all know penis growth is a very HOT issue in America these days.

Well, NJ has (sadly) become the first state in the US at limiting G-Forces on roller coasters
doesn't bother me, I find it's more useful when your g-force is in the agp slot in your computer than on a rollercoaster.

This is bad news especially considering many governments and institutions have adopted linux because windows was said to be 'insecure'.
You guys sure seem to post a lot of links you aren't supposed to.
GPL violations has (should read have) caused Epson to yank their free downloads of their ImageScan! and Photo Image Print System software for Linux
If Epson used a normal license instead of a confusing one like GPL they wouldn't have had to waste money correcting this problem.

why is this comment rated +4, when my comment, which was the same thing, has been modded down as a troll. Moderators please fix this.

so instead of donating the server to a school or non profit organization that might NEED it, its going to be crushed and destroyed.
This is almost as selfish as the people who blow up their old MACs.

does this mean we are going to be giving network admins guns? I don't really trust those guys, with all their quake playing and all.
