  1. Be all that you can be on The Real Mission to Mars · · Score: 3, Funny
is looking for "anyone in good physical condition between 18 and 60 years of age... Scientific, engineering, practical mechanical, wilderness, and literary skills are all considered a plus." Only the passionate need apply: "conditions are likely to be tough and the job will be very trying."

Tha's odd, the US Army is trying to ask for the same demographic for Afghanistan. The land is about the same: baren and dry.

  2. UPS doesn't like supprises on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 2, Informative
UPS does have a policy that all eletronic (CPU's, TV's, etc.) devices be shipped in their original box. This is in their Terms of Service. I worked ina firm that shipped computers. When we faxed a P.O. to someone, we told them to file a claim with UPS no matter what condition the box was in. It was a pre-emtive strike. Most of the time, nothing happened, but in the few instances where the CPU was damaged, if the calim was not filed right away, then the person was SOL.

The irony comes in to play when you get the UPS TOS sent to you when you start an account with UPS. It's a four book set about shipping policies. Ten to fifteen pages are just about how to file a claim with UPS. They pretty much have every possable thing that can happen to your package, and if it is covered in the TOS. This means that each thin in the TOS happned to a pakcage at one point. Or some lawyer thought that a UPS employee may dunk your package under-water.

Either way, I use a personal courier if something is really important. FedEx and Airborne are no better.

  3. Family car trips have a new meaning with POD on Sony/Toyota Developing Car With Emotions · · Score: 1
I'm sure this will play out with the new car, and will bring family's much closer on their fun vacations.

Picture Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother in Pod.

Sister: Bobby is touching me again.
    Mom: Bobby, stop it!
Brother: I'm not doing anything, Liz is trying to get me into trouble.
Mom: I don't care don't do it anymore. Dad is trying to concentrate.
Dad is sweating from four hours driving with the constant bickering from the backseat.
Sister: HAHA! You got in trouble!
    Brother: Shut up!
Dad: (screaming) If I hear one more noise from this car, I'm going to turn this car around, and were not going to Disneyland.
Sister and Brother: OK OK, we'll be good.
    30 seconds later.
Pod: (in a girly voice) Owwww, Bobby is hitting me.
Dad: (now turned around, facing the backseat, screaming on the top of his lungs) Bobby, I TOLD YOU TO STOP IT! DO I NEED TO COME BACK THERE?
    Brother: (half crying) No.
Dad: (still yelling): Liz, I TOLD YOU TO STOP BEING A TATTLE-TALE! DO I NEED TO COME BACK THERE?
Sister: (crying) No. Mom: Jim, keep your eyes on the road. I don't want to get killed.
Dad: You stay out of it, Lois!
    POD: (snickering)

Seems just like my old vacations already.

  4. Oh, no, look up at the sky on Extreme Recycling - Cardboard Buildings · · Score: 1

There has to be a problem with lightning and the building. In no way do I claim to be an engineer of any type; but if lightning strikes any part of the building, even if it is treated cardboard, would the lighting cause some, if not a lot, of damage. Causing even more damage than on a building make of traditional materials? Traditional materials don't stand up well on their own. Without some sort of protection, the cardboard will be in a lot of trouble.

I'm curious to see what sort of solution the engineers have in tackling one of nature's most destructive forces: the thunderstorm.

  5. Phone Ringing on Copyright Claimed on Telephone Tones · · Score: 1

I wonder what's next, someone copyrighting the sound that you hear on the phone when a phone rings?

Let's see, at one cent per ring X thousands of calls per minute = a house so large it has it's own zip code. Time to call the copyright office!

But they do have a good point, the best defense to an argument is make the argument so absurd. Like obtaining copyrights on something so simple and widespread tat people take for granted, such as DTMF tones, that the average person can see the flaws in the system.

  6. My own little story with parody domain names on How Many Domains Does Your School Own? · · Score: 1

I had a similar situation happen to myself. I registered a domain name somthing along the lines of "mycollegesucks.com". I did it on a whim on day, just becuase my school did not own the domain name, and I thought it would be fun to have, like a baseball rookie card for nerds.

A week later, while I was working in the computer lab at my school, I was confonted by my boss with my web site ownership. They were firm but fair, saying that I could own the domain name, and thay can't stop me from doing anything with it. Just like the administration could not prohibit me from handing out newsletters on campus. However, the fact that I had a small job that the universty with computers could lead to a problem. I knew where they were going with it. I promply removed everything from my web server, but did not turn over the rights to the name. They were satisfied, so was I.

I never heard anything after that from my boss. The situation was not a direct link to mine, as I worked there also, but I does have an intresting slant to it. I have the website making fun of my work and my place of higher education!

  7. Re:GPS and Cell phones? on GPS Meets PCS · · Score: 2, Informative

There was a case in New Haven, Connecticut, where Acme, was "asked" to refund charges for "speed violations" by the state department of consumer protection. When the GPS system tracked a speed above 90 MPH, ACME charged a cool $150. The Atty. General has asked for refunds. It should be pointed out that ACME does not inform the local police in any way. They just pocket each fine. They now have there own speeding enforcement system, and there own way of cashing in! I thought some smaller towns had a crooked traffic court. This is a private firm, their own judge and jury; where each fine equals more profit. This is just not right.
