    I think it depends on how you define cloud computing. If you keep it broad, it's like saying email is the worst thing in the world, because 90% of it is spam. 90% of cloud ideas are dumb are poorly implemented (or thought out), but it doesn't mean that there aren't uses for it to solve problems that are really hard any other way.

    Do you think google should get rid of GFS and bigtable and move off their cloud to a more centralized datastore? I'm sure they can handle all of their data and computing needs without using a cloud....

    Who cares if they do this? Can't you just quit and get a job somewhere else that will pay well?

    Don't get caught up on audio. It doesn't cover just audio files. They used the blanket term media (which is a little weird), but they mean any medium: audio, video, or other files. So usenet, list servers, pop, imap, etc all fit that bill.

    IMAP.

    1. Email INBOX is a channel where-in publishers of emails can provide episodic media
    2. IMAP clients "subscribe" to a channel (server + folder)
    3. IMAP clients automatically download updated episodic media from the channel without further interaction by the user
    4. IMAP can be configured to give stats about "channel metadata" and get rid of old media (auto archive of emails over X days old, ect)

    Anyone that uses a cron job (the subscription) to automatically pull down newer updates (episodes) of some media without further user interaction has prior art on this.

    cron.daily: emerge --sync, downloading security updates

    RSS feeds, IMAP "subscriptions", etc

    Eudora clients and IMAP mail servers have been "podcasting" emails for a LONG time.

    Subscription request? This isn't push. That's a cron job running locally pulling down weekly archives. That's gentoo doing "emerge --sync" daily in a cron job without further user interaction.

    1. There is no subscription. Client side software periodically retrieves new content. It's not like a mailing list subscription that pushes out digests and content and bounces mail if your server isn't up. This is polling.

    2. Episodic media is a worthless term. CD tracks are episodic.

    3. Upon availability? Still have to poll.

    By NOT paying sales taxes online you are hurting your local businesses, which effects the local flow of money, and has rippling and compunding effects on your state's budget.

    Actually, if you leave that field blank on my state's taxes, your odds of an audit go up by nearly an order of magnitude.

    To turn this around, the 1000 people or so that fill that blank in can decrease their odds by 10 to help offset their other tax evasion risks?

    If you provide other probabilities, we can all max-min the system.

    Just because that one site presents all of that information, doesn't mean all of the sites do.

    Either way, trying to trick people into signing up for a services, should not be categorized as a legitimate business activity.

    Comparing that to having the Slashdot submit button charge your CC number is ludicrous.

    What? you failed to notice they updated their ToS which they say they can do at anytime?

    Fitness club membership / loan is another way. The whole fitness membership scam/deal looks like loan payments. My membership actually really helped out my credit score because i had it for so long.

    Actually they are scams because they don't make it clear that they are going to charge you money.

    There are millions of sites online where you can get a coupon or discount for giving up your email address. These scams look identically to those offers accept these scams actually charge your CC even though you NEVER gave them your CC number.

    What if the reply Submit button on slashdot quietly charged your CC every time you replied to a comment? It's exactly the same thing. It's a scam designed to trick people into signing up for a fee services. That's why congress is looking at it because of the sheer number of people that were "tricked" into signing up for it.

    If i don't have to enter my CC number i don't care if someone has one my my generated throw away email addresses.

    The image you present actually spells it out much better than other sites have.

    I don't think filling in an email address should constitute getting charged to your CC. Maybe the best bet is to keep signing up for these and refusing the charges?

    OS persons would be jumping about like grass-hoppers that THIS could never happen in OS software...The Many Eyes theory looks weak...

    You misunderstand then. It's not the point that it could never happen, but that it gets found and fixed. This bug was found in the absence of proof of concept code unlike the reverse situation.
