  1. Re:no way...but what about the Matrix ?? on Live-Action Remake of Akira · · Score: 5, Interesting

Don't forget where the Wachowsky brothers got their inspiration from...MANGAs ! Now I agree that Akira is a work of art as anime but with the current technology at the hands of the right people this could really be something.

Tell me I'm not the only one who noticed the reference to Ghost in the Shell when agent Smith lands on top of the building on one knee with his gun pointing up as the roof cracks at the impact. That was a good example of a pure manga-style anime scene which looks quite good in live-action in fact if you watch the Matrix documentary its obvious that this was a Manga turned live-action and what a surprise...it was a major breakthrough.

People were saying the same thing about LOTR and that's not half as bad as people feared (even the hardcore fans of Tolkien). If we keep an open mind and judge this film for what it will be (not what we *think it will be* then we'll at least give them a chance to try and bring another dimension to Akira...I personally hope that it'll be as good as the Matrix in terms of effects and that we'll get that Manga/anime feeling that made the Matrix so different (for me anyway)

  2. The Future of the Web and the Governments on Slashback: Courseware, Warranties, Subscraption · · Score: 0, Redundant

Chinese surfers searching Google are finding their Internet connection dropped for five minutes if they enter "politically sensitive" keywords

    Wondering if that's the future?

Here's what it could be like:
M.Anderson types in a "politically sensitive" keyword in his search engine...
Agent Smith receives a warning from HQ of this attempt.
    (*loud electro-hissing sound*)
Agent Smith:"Hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability. It is the sound of your connection being dropped."

  3. It's not the Banners it's the service that matters on Advertising on a Free Wireless Network? · · Score: 1

People will accept banners as long as the service for which they are accessing the service/software/etc, is what they want.
The banners in this specific case should not pose a significant deterrent as long as they remain banners and not mandatory select-to-continue style banners where the users spend time before realizing they have to *do* something to get the ad to go away so they can proceed with their business.

Again, the service is where the focus needs to be, history has shown that people will pay to get quality service when free service with banners was offered but was of lesser quality...

  6. Open Source is already in the Government on Tim O'Reilly Bashes Open Source Efforts in Govt · · Score: 1, Insightful

There are lots of examples of Open Source sw being used in the government. It's already used by NASA on the International Space Station and on various SpaceFlight experiments such as Flight Linux . The NERSC also works with Linux and provides M-VIA which is an implementation of Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) for Linux. The above are but just a few places in government where Open Source sw is already being used.

The government, as explained in Micheal's text, needs to account for its spending and show transparency...it cannot favor *anybody* or any *product* without justification. Therefore, it is only logical that at this time we find Open Source being used in the Research and Development areas of the government where the flexibility and COST of Open Sw gives it an undeniable advantage.

  7. Red Hat - Stand up and be Counted ! on Microsoft Invests in the University of Waterloo · · Score: 0

If MS invests in universities why shouldn't Red Hat (or any Linux distro) start investing in them?
Personally, university is where I first learned about Linux and downloaded my 1st set of "A" disks from slackware as a result of trying it out so I could do most of my programming work at home.

Linux currently OWNS the student-market by being free and offering an incomparable network of support.

This, unfortunately for Linux, is a wise marketing move on the part of MS. In response, the Linux community must counter-attack and offer the equivalent choice to students at competing universities.

Linux needs to stand up and fight MS on this new battleground for the up-and-coming generation of slashdotters will spring from it...what do you think happens to students when they graduate?? They go in the corporate world and very often use the tools that they know (or were taught) how to use.

  10. Sad yes, but there is still desire to reach MARS on NASA to Go Commercial? · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is some truth to what you are saying.
However, let's not forget that space exploration is what brought about the unification of multiple countries in a joined effort to build the ISS. (very noble thing)
    More importantly don't forget NASA's next step-->MARS
I believe that the general public really wants humans to go to Mars. Why ?? Simply because it is there and reaching it has never been done.(something similar to what Hillary said prior to taking on the Everest) For those who want to look deeper into where we come from and where we're going this has to be a step in the right direction.
Look at all the mass following of Sci-Fi space exloration (eg Star Trek), you can't say people don't want space exploration. What people want is space exploration without the associated costs !
Also, I wonder if Enterprise paid NASA to use the shuttle and the NASA footage on their title scene.(or it may just be the other way around !) Well, better start putting your kids into space engineering school so they can be picked as part of the 1st crew to go to Mars in ~20-30 years.
