Let's face it: this injustice is going to continue as long as the generation of people who were hippies in the 1960's are in power.

This generation is filled with people who bucked centuries of moderately well-functioning social customs for a narrow-minded, self-centred set of principles that were logically broken, namely, that everyone could be a freeloader, and that taking mind-altering drugs and raising children only affect the individuals who make those decisions.

We're not going to change these people's minds about these technology issues, because that would involve drastically changing the thought process that has been engrained in their minds since their childhood.

I am familiar with how to get information for *nix programming: just search the web, look up the manpages, and post questions on the mailing lists/newsgroups. But I have a hell of a time writing Windows programs because I can't seem to find the mutual support network that is so common in the *nix world.

    Three points:

    • You cannot expect the police to do their jobs properly if everything they do has to be ordered by a judge. It just encourages cutting corners.
    • You can sue for false arrest or harassment if the cops are bugging you for frivolous reasons
    • In some areas, judges (just older lawyers, really) are equally or less trustworthy than policemen. We really don't want to give them too much power, either.
