    And why, pray tell, does a developer's machine need to be on the internet browsing their website (which is what you need in order to be counted)? Development machines are typically standalone, with a windoze box in the other room which is never really used except to test win32 builds of software being built.

    Yeah, SGI is so mean, opening all their specs to the public and not making a bit of complaint about Mesa. Defending a trademark is typical and not evil.

    ... but not by very much!

    Quakeforge, the next-generation QuakeWorld engine has SDL and SGL targets, and they run almost as fast as the svgalib target. They're certainly playable.

    Also, check out New Breed Software, as they use SDL in pretty much everything.

    I totally agree. Microsoft doesn't understand that the only reason their bad-quality software sells is because consumers don't know any better, nor do they (the average joe) have any real alternatives with the features they want. Even a lot of Linux software is bloated (i.e. KDE and GNOME -- how many people really run a desktop linux system on a 486?) and doesn't provide the features that MS software does.

    Microsoft's attitude is like that of a smoker: "I smoke, and there's nothing wrong with me, and look at that sick non-smoker over there!" In the short run it will benefit Microsoft, but in the long run, it will be its downfall.

    The difference between the Apple II, The C=64 and the Amiga is that the Apple II and the C=64 weren't 10 years ahead of their time performance-wise, and (indefinite) years ahead of their time design-wise. The Amiga was.

    Heh! This is probably an April Fools' day joke, which tells us all how clueless the Slashdot crew really is. To them, it's a joke that will never be true. To many of us, it's quite possible and it would be quite rational to move to FreeBSD for a high-load network service (i.e. website). Go figure!

    Have you tried a named pipe? Admitted, you can't get ioctls, but for most stuff it's enough. I admit, this would be nice, but I don't think it's high prio.

    Named pipes won't allow me to give my machine native ESD (or whatever mixer you like) support.

    Well X *could* be the video card driver if it could takeover /dev/fb. See my wish #1.

    Software suspend used to be in the -ac kernels, but it mysteriously disappeared.

    I know about the issues regarding PCSP, but this is a wishlist, dammit!

    There are no per-app capabilities, AFAIK, just system-wide hard limits. This is not what I want. It's also not widespread enough that it's possible to run no services as root.

    • User-space-based block and character device nodes. (i.e. a user-space driver can be on the "kernel" side of /dev/dsp for mixing or whatever)
    • User-space service of new filesystem types. The I'm-an-NFS-server-too hacks have to go.
    • Prioritized I/O operations. It's really irritating when a nice 19 process can slow down a nice -20 process because it's doing a find / that's sucking up the disk I/O.
    • Fast, non-X-based 2D (GGI) and 3D (??) graphics control.
    • Software suspend (a.k.a. software "hibernation").
    • Internal PC-speaker driver.
    • Real-time support (assimilate RTLinux, maybe?).
    • CD/DVD-R(W) packet-writing.
    • Finish UDF filesystem support.
    • Some mechanism to eliminate the need to run various services as root (Capabilities, ACLs, LIDS' mechanism, etc).
