    Why do they need the White Knight? Don't they usually drop these types of test craft from bombers (like the B-52)? Surely the US air force can get thier hands on one.

    A phone uses only one pair of wires. In order to patch into a sound card, you'll need a pair of wires for the line in, and a pair of wires for the line out.

    "Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away" should be a clue that the word parsec may not have the same meaning that it does in earth based astronomy. After all, in some parts of the galaxy, Easter means small flat and light brown.

    ...it's basically the largest distance you can move away from the solar system and still be able to barelly distinguish the earth's orbit from the Sun. Any further and you won't be able to do so.

    That is not entirely correct, and it may not be the easiest way to explain it to a layman.

    First, telescopes can resolve much better than one arc-second. Hubble has a resolving power of 0.05 arc-seconds. Adaptive optics can achieve 0.1 arc-seconds here on the surface. Radio telescopes can resolve down to 0.001", theoretically enough to resolve the moon's orbit from one parsec out.

    Second, to a layman "barely distinguish" is a focus or a zoom problem, not a distance problem. It is far easier to say that if you were in space looking at the solar system, and the angle you have to move your telescope to switch from looking at the sun to looking at the earth is one arc-second, then you are one parsec away.

    Why do you consider storing mp3s, bittorrents, etc illegitimate? Is time shifting TV shows a legitimate use? What about my friend's video editting business? There are plenty of ways of generating 120GB of data in legitimate ways.

    They've done engine tests, and capsule recovery tests, and they've got plenty of signs of flight hardware. It was recently touring Chicago. These are not photoshopped pictures. The rocket is a real thing. I've seen it.

    Just a guess, but when landing, you are pointing the plane at a target (Instrument Landing System). The aircraft can compute how to stay on the glide path. When taking off, there is no such system, and consequently, no way to know if you are on the right track.

    Of course, this is just a guess. I am not a pilot. P.S. Anybody know any good flight sim programs for linux? With helicopters?

    When landing a harrier on a pitching, rolling aircraft carrier deck, 10cm doesn't make any difference at all. In fact, it's pretty much a precision touchdown.

    In other words, it will rarely be up-to-date, thus unreliable. VOIP will be unsuitable for 911 calls until the caller's location can be ascertained without the caller's intervention.

    ... and if you're not at home, then what? What if you cannot describe where you are (say you're choking on something, or you've got an intruder, or the building is on fire and you have to leave)? What if you're a child and your mom is convulsing on the floor? Modern 911 services do not need to interact with the caller to know where the call is coming from.

    The VOIP service can connect you to any telephone line in the world, so there no reason they can't connect you to a local 911 dispatch service.

    The point you seem to be missing is that, as well as being able to connect TO any phone line in the world, you can connect FROM any internet connection in the world. So, when you take your laptop with you to a different city, how will the VOIP provider know not to route the 911 call to your home town's emergency services, but to Vacationville's services?

    Square minutes don't have length. It is a rate of change measurement, although an odd one (undoubtedly non-metric). Perhaps the question is "how quick?", or "how slow?"?

    Patents are not designed to foster competition or reduce prices for the competition. Patents are designed to be short term protection for inventors to allow them to recoup development costs.
