  1. Champagne on Russia Claims IP Rights In Manufacture of AK-47 · · Score: 1

This reminds me of the controversy with France wanting to claim that "Champagne" can only refer to wine produced in the Champagne region of France, and not wines produced in California for instance. Perhaps the producers of the knockoff AK-47s should adopt the same solution the California winemakers did and call their product "Sparkling Machine Guns".

Having given up cable because it was occupying too much of my time, I was shocked to find out I could still follow ABC's Lost by watching the shows via Flash videos on their website. The idea that a major corporation would do something as progressive as putting every new episode online the day after it airs just went against everything I expected of a big company. I think the leadership at some companies is finally getting that they can make money without requiring a purchase or locking content via DRM. Probably younger executives finally getting into positions where they can influence those decisions.

As far as replacing cable, believe it or not more people I know are starting to use it like a DVR, since they can watch the show at a time of their choice and there are no fees. And don't underestimate the number of bored office workers out there, now able to see their favorite show at work rather than just read news articles.

The good news for the cable companies is that since they've expanded to providing internet connectivity, they get a cut of the profit regardless of whether what goes over their wires is analog or digital.

  6. svn trick on Version Control for Important System Files? · · Score: 4, Informative
I use subversion (and tortoisesvn as the client) to version my windows system files, in general it works well. There is a trick though. To get a directory under svn control you normally have to import that directory and then rename it so you can checkout an svn'ed copy under the same name. This can be a problem for certain system directories. In this case what you do is :
    1. create the dir in the repository but leave it empty
    2. checkout that url on the existing dir, since url is empty nothing is overwritten
    3. now do an svn add then commit to get everything into the repository
This leaves you with a versioned dir without need for renaming or deletion

  9. ridiculous on New Phone Service Promises to ID Songs · · Score: 1

They will never be able to build a big enough user base charging $0.99 just to identify a song. If they were smart/could get the rights they should set it up so that the service IDs the song and *sells you a copy* for something like $1.50. That makes the transaction way more useful and fun for the user, and the service gets to keep the 50 cents convenience fee. Doing this way in my opinion is a recipe for failure and probably isn't financially viable.

  10. On not releasing the orignal versions... on Star Wars DVD Box Set Released · · Score: 1
This is from a recent AP interview with George Lucas.
Q: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?

A: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. ....

What a totally selfish point of view. George Lucas has this idea that Star Wars was his baby so the fond memories of millions of people and the historical significance of the film take a back seat to his wishes. The argument about spending money on releasing the originals is obviously unfounded, there would be enough fans out there to pay for it. Of course it's possible he's saying this to make sure to maximize sales of the special edition, and he could "change his mind" later and release the originals. But even this would be preferable to never releasing them because of his whims.

You got that right. The whole "sexy baby" thing is annoying, not just when they're the bad guys. Don't get me wrong, woman are beautiful. But like you said... if you want to see some hot chicks, you know where to go. Not EVERYTHING has to be about hot babes, and I'd like to be able to enjoy some fun science fiction without having to feel like I'm watching something that's really targetting some puberty-controlled teenage boy.

There was a Battlestar Galactica marathon on SciFi about two months ago and I got to watch a few episodes. Of course, most of the commercials were for the new Galactica that they were going to release in December. One of the commercials actually was talking/showing a photoshoot from Maxim magazine where apparently one of the actresses came from (that ought to tell you something... their cast consists of models, not actors apparently).

This post is so mis-informed it might even be a troll. With all the complaining about sexy babes in the new series it almost totally overlooks the facts of the original series. Not only were Jane Seymour and Laurette Spang from the original certainly lookers, Maren Jensen who played Athena got her start with Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazine covers. Give me a break!

But what I suspect will happen is that fuel for fuel cells will become the next ink jet print cartridge, with manufacturers charging insane prices for refills. The price you pay for plugging in your laptop will be a fraction of what a single fuel cell refill will cost. And of course you can expect the same manufacturer technical lock-ins as ink, except now with even more warnings like "Use of non-approved refills will result in EXPLOSIONS AND DEATH, buy only certified refills UNLESS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BLOWING YOUR HEAD OFF. You've BEEN WARNED, JACKASS!"

Interesting that this review is so favorable toward the ipod's audio quality. I really like the design of the machine and want to get one, so I was checking out the sound quality. I test listened to one on my own headphones and I was a little surprised, it didnt seem that crisp and seemed to lack bass. I tried most of the DSP settings, they made little difference.

This seemed to jibe with what I found at This Site that compares the ipod's sound quality to other MP3 players. He said he found that the line out was good, but that the headphone seemed to be lacking.

I'll have to listen again, but that would stink because the ipod is almost perfect in other ways. I might still get it even with imperfect sound!
