Just out of curiousity, I did a google on "top 10 list" and got about 2,380,000 results. So even though most of those are NOT in newspapers, and even though SOME of the lists would know what they were talking about, let's pretend they were all clueless top 10 lists in newspapers. A paltry $23,800 would hardly make you rich. Ok, that was a waste of time :)

Knowing that in about 10 years, let's assume, the expensive battery on the Prius is going to need to be replaced, it's my feeling that the used market for this form of hybrid is going to have a near-zero dollar value. You may even have to pay people to dispose of the things properly. Who wants a car that if working, would have a used value of $2-$3k, but needs a $2-$3k battery to be replaced?

I'm sure the carmakers have thought of this. For example, if the battery does die and you don't replace it, will the gas engine simply stay running and it will just get worse mileage? Battery costs may well go way down in ten years, as well. This just stays on the back of my mind about hybrids. I would love to have a used one in five or ten years, especially if this problem were solved. And this is the market that'll really get the mass penetration imo...

Has anyone else noticed the frequency of these articles? Now that there is a serious contender to IE, suddenly I see all these articles how "no browser" could be secure. Just this month there was a pretty big column in PC Magazine about how using Firefox "just isn't enough" for your web browsing security. My problem with most of these articles is they seem to ignore what a leap forward Firefox is and was. As in, "eh, why bother changing from IE, Firefox isn't fully secure" instead of "use Firefox because it really is more secure, but also do this and this." I don't know that Firefox is going to gain much more marketshare with these silly (and really, very odd) trains of thought. If it's better, it's better. And then there is the openness, which if you listened to some writers (eh, PC Mag) doesn't add any value what-so-ever.

  9. My Picks... on Genre-Defining Games? · · Score: 1

I think something like this is infinetely influenced by the games we were most exposed to in our past. Given this, here's my list:

Adventure: Can't help myself when I continually think back to the original Zelda for the original Gameboy. Was and still is great fun! Zelda Ocarina of Time for N64 was very, very strong, and I also own Windwaker, but the boat in Windwaker seemed just tedious to me. Yea, I play other adventure games besides the Zelda series, but the Zelda series seems to have that perfect mix of action and exploration.

FPS Single Player: Toss up for me between Wolf3D and HL2. Just because Wolf3D was so awesome to behold back then, as HL2 is now.

FPS Multiplayer: Genre-defining, I would have to say Quake 3. That's when all the buttons hit just right, and all the cylinders were fired at just the right times. It's not that innovative, but still tons and tons of people play it, and it's always great for a quick game. As a personal favorite, I would say UT2004...Onslaught is such a great addition to multiplayer fps, if you haven't tried it, you just have to get the UT2004 demo.

2D Platformer: Obviously mario, but my favorite in all the series is SMB3. I really, really wish Nintendo would release a NEW 2D mario game. No more stinkin retreads! Though I wouldn't really call SMB3 so much "genre-defining" as I would call it "genre-ending." There's basically no chance of anyone ever coming close to the greatness of that game. Ok, a little overboard? Maybe, maybe not...a couple other good ones...Duck Tales for NES...Yoshi's Island (underrated)...Mega Man 2...

3D Platformer: Mario 64, period. Mario Sunshine is too cumbersome but Mario 64 had the perfect mix of simple control and good level design.

Racing: Never have cared for racing games, I just like the typical Mario Kart and GTA games, and I don't even care which one is genre-defining.

Side-Scrolling bashers!: A game I always compare the side-scrolling bashers to is oddly enough, Streets of Rage 2 for the Genesis. It got the fighting feel down pat. For just playability and fun you might say River City Ransom for NES.

RPG: Chrono Trigger. Finally, you can actually not fight enemies if you don't feel like it! That alone qualifies it against the god-awful random fights in other RPGs.

    RTS: Hate em, who cares.

    Off the beaten path:

Rom Hacks: Okay, this is a weird category. But when ROM hacking was just getting started, translating FF2 (famicom) into english was all the rage for probably over a year! I always think of that one when people are doing hacking or translation projects. Hehe. Just wanted to throw that in. Also as a non-translation hack, Super Mario Wheelchair Bros. is a hilariously simple hack made to the original Super Mario Bros.

Emulators: Okay, talking genre-DEFINING here, and that's definetely what this is for those of you that remember. NESticle! The perfect GUI, great speed, tons of options, and great compatibility (for its time). I doubt any emulator bypassed NESticle in popularity until the later incarnations of ZSNES or maybe MAME, but I think tons of us always will look back at NESticle as the emulator that probably really did get the ball rolling in emulation as far as getting thousands upon thousands of people and coders interested in emulation.

Shooters: I always think back to Life Force for the NES as a shooter to be reckoned with. You could possibly say Star Fox defined the newer shooters...if there are more than a couple for this to actually be a genre.

How the hell do we expect this industry to react? People will always act in their best interests.

I have to take issue with you. We didn't have DRM on CDs, so why should we accept it on digital downloads? Has anyone else noticed how hard it can be to read the neutral/negative feedback of a seller? They purposely make it this way. The feedbacks used to say Complaint: or Neutral: in front of each feedback, so you could for example view the maximum feedback per page and search the page for Complaints.

Now, you get a stupid icon, and scrolling down the screen with a lot of feedback, good luck spotting the grey Neutral against the green positive, and it's not easy to spot the complaints, either. It certainly was much easier before. There's no reason they couldn't have Complaint: and then the stupid icon. I've bitched about it to them, and got a non-response. I hope others complain as well.

I hope competitors clean ebay's clock, because they don't orient their business for the convenience or protection of buyers. In fact, there should be a way to click and view only complaints. They're afraid this will scare off a few sales, but look how many damn frauds it would prevent!!!

Alot of people complain about Canada's healthcare system but for 99% of the population its good. I live in one of the biggest cities and have no problems seeing a doctor within an hour or so if I need to. Specialists may take a few weeks/months but if its going to affect your quality of life you can get seen quicker.

I'm glad it's up to you or whomever to determine what operation is going to affect my quality of life. I don't necessarily have a problem helping the poor afford medical care, but I don't see why there should be health care for everyone, simply because of the limits it puts on freedom. If you only have a national health care system, and a doctor can't see you for a negotiated price whenever he wants, that's just wrong.

I don't expect that from local stores, but it's a major reason I shop there. And Wal-Mart can be beat on a lot of their prices, especially computer parts. The other day I wanted a simple USB hub and they wanted $30. Screw that, when I can get them on ebay for under 10 bucks, which is what I did. Computer price points are my main expertise so I'm not sure about other things, but it's hard for me to believe that computer parts are the only thing in Wal-Mart that is a bunch cheaper elsewhere.
