  1. Re:alt. link for windows firebird 0.7 on Three New Releases (And Other News) From Mozilla · · Score: 1

I found another source, at 10-20 kbps:
    http://seb.mozdev.org/firebird/

  2. Not yet! Backlit version coming in a week!!! on Gameboy Advance Clone Superemulator · · Score: 1
"Also, Entware let me know that backlighted GP32 will be available on the 10th of april, and he confirmed me that JoyGP, the international MeGaGp will be opened during the second half of april." Link

While I can't speak for the reliability of the source, Entware seems to be the supplier of a gp32 DivX player. Interesting...

  3. EBay and $$ on Star Wars Galaxies Only to Allow One Character Per Account · · Score: 1
The new issue of Wired (sorry, no link yet) has a great article about the economics of Ultima Online; i.e. people who play the game and auction off their stuff make over $3/hr on average, placing this *virtual* economy 79th in the world.

So how will this compare to SWG where you can no longer Mule and get away with general stupid stuff? And which game will have the higher GDP? Only time will tell!!

  4. According to Google News??? on New Mad Max Film · · Score: 1
    Try CNN/BBC/etc.

I'm sure the folks over at Google would like to know that they have entered the world of journalism!

  5. My Favorite App on Getting Started In Linux · · Score: 1
If I had to pick an app to show off Linux, it would probably be MythTV. It basically makes your PC into a TiVo + music browser, and there's no monthly service charge!

Now, if I could just get my system properly set up for it...

  6. Is this legal? on Ipsos-Reid: More Americans Downloading Music · · Score: 1
I recently discovered that it is possible to rip MP3s directly from a shoutcast stream, divided up into files by song, and properly named and tagged. This makes it absolutely effortless to pirate (complete) songs! (Check google if you're curious.)

What I want to know is if this falls under the same category as TV timeshifting, or recording your favorite show on a VCR/PVR and playing it back as much as you like.

Do you guys know of any applicable US laws / court cases?

  7. Re:Happy Shithead! :) 3 on Slashback: Circumvention, AOLandfill, Scoffing · · Score: 1

Are you a moron, or is this a slashcode bug???

  8. Re: One small step for BanKind. on Slashback: Circumvention, AOLandfill, Scoffing · · Score: 1

Oh yeah.... Now that you mention it, it did come up in Phoenix when I went there tonight to pay my bill, whereas I usually have to shout an obsenity or two and then open up IE. I didn't even notice this one... Silly me!

  9. How will this affect spam? on AIM And ICQ to be Integrated · · Score: 4, Interesting

The whole reason I scraped ICQ from my box was because I got too much spam through it. I wonder if using ICQ names through the AIM server will prevent spam? After all, I've never been spammed over AIM, that I remember... Then again, maybe I should have just looked more closely at ICQ's privacy settings.

  10. A new "use" for XSLT on Tim Bray on Microsoft Office · · Score: 1

Does this mean we'll see the very first XSLT Virus soon? I mean, VirusBasic scripts are getting so tiresome...

  11. Military Costs Are High Enough Already! on Seeking Arguments Against the CBDTPA? · · Score: 1
Do aircraft/shipboard/field/etc. computers fall under the "interactive digital device" catagory? They are certainly capable of processing or storing or transmitting copyrighted material. But anyone could tell you that it would be ludicrous to put copyright protection onboard a B2, for example, further increasing upkeep costs, to make Disney stock go up a few cents. What about classified computers and labs? What about automatic teller machines? Digital wristwatches with IR transmitters? The TiVo? XBox?? The list goes on and on.

The implications of this bill are way too sweeping. The cost of enforcement will be far worse for our economy than any damage we could try to pin on Napster.

Maybe if DVDs didn't use some lame 5-and-dime encryption (not to mention unprotected audio CDs) we wouldn't have to be out billions of dollars to cover Hollywood's ass.

  12. People's Reactions on US Starts Attacking Afghanistan · · Score: 1
I want to say that I fully support my nation's attack on the Taliban and various military targets. What I loathe, however, is people who rejoice in, or try to profit from the hate or suffering of others, whether innocent civillians or terrorist extremists.

Here's a perfect example of what I mean:
Fox News: Texas Retailer Decides its OK to Sell bin Laden Piñatas

I'm not saying we shouldn't look for opportunities to bring about good after tragedy, but I believe in understanding and even respecting your enemy, even your mortal enemy.

I sincerely hope that the citizens and government of America will pay heed to the lessons of the past.
