The government (whether you like Bush or not) is extremely pro-business right now and for all the wrong reasons. It's one thing to make sure businesses operate fairly, it's another thing entirely to give them control of the law via lobbyists. This will likely happen here and we pro-FOSS people will have to do whatever it takes to get by. We're already "criminals" based on the DMCA if we're watching DVDs on our Linux boxes using Xine or MPlayer. That doesn't stop many of us anyway. Same thing applies to the development of new software. Hell, if we had to, we'd probably use pseudo code that gets sent and translated in a non-U.S. country to something that does work so it technically wasn't written here.

Mods with a clue, please fix my original post. Anyone with half a brain can see it was a well calculated and timely joke. It makes light of the original poster's comment which didn't really contribute anything to the original topic. It makes a reference to the now defunct Umax Macintosh clones that you would very likely be aware of if you were born before 1990. It makes clever and believable reference to the Windows XP registration process. It takes a shot at some of the older software company practices of keying on the MAC address as copy protection (which was idiotic at the start and that was proven by the failures they had when users got new NICs). And finally it takes a potshot at lawyers in general who are to blame for most of the artificial restrictions holding us back from computer nirvana. Could you imagine what the computer industry would be like without artificial restrictions like DRM, copy protection and the like? As long as the people in the business were united not to make money, but to make the best goddamned software in the world, we'd have so much more functionality. Yeah... money is nice and all, but not when it gets in the way of progress.

There's still way too much flat and solid color stuff in KDE. And anything that does have gradients or 3D look and feel is only at the most basic level. There isn't much photorealism in the GUI. That's a HUGE detriment if you are trying to attract the eyecandy crowd. Now... there are plenty of people who aren't in that crowd and we (the eyecandy folks) are a small group. 1. Science Fiction is SUPPOSED to be escapist crap at worst and idealistic "what if" at best. And it should be set in a different time or a world where things are different. From my perspective Philip K. Dick is one of the best science fiction authors in the history of the known universe and no one can usurp him from that. I think Clarke, Asimov and Harrison are overrated bullshit artists.

    2. I wasn't saying that killing key characters as a dramatic device was new. I was just saying that it's a stupid device since it's so ho-hum. The only notable exception is when it's used for humor where it has more impact since it's not taking itself seriously. The Bard using this technique, however, can be excused in the same way we can forgive people for thinking that blacks weren't human. He didn't know any better and back then it WAS kind of a new idea.

    3. Just because it is either too sophisticated for, or just plain disagrees with, you is no reason to insult it. I like to say what I feel and I like to make sure I'm punching people in the head when I say it. But there's no offense meant. Sorry for the misunderstanding there. Keep in mind that some of us have mean spirited senses of humor. For an example of what I'm talking about, go here and click on the Media link. Or does anyone else find the pap that Jos Whedon writes to be juvenille? Everything about the shows he's done always seem to come from the perspective of some moronic teen who *thinks* he should have respect from others because of the awesome power he can wield or the incredibly knowledge he has. But in reality the kid is just a prick with an ego problem who is self-deprecating as a front to pretend he isn't a prick. I'm not talking about the characters in the shows themselves, but the mindset of the creator/author. The stupid affectation of taking your key characters and killing them off after something really good happens to them. Yeah, I had that idea when I was twelve and thought it would be awesome. Then I turned thirteen and realized how lame it was as a dramatic device. Better to go over the top and make it a humor device instead. There also seems to be somewhat of a libertarian bent (gag) in some of the programs. Pretty much an every man for himself style approach with the individual being celebrated for their striving and "great achievments" when in reality, you're talknig about sad, lonely people who don't relate well with others and are highly distrustful.

Personally I prefer Enlightenment (e17) as nothing on the Windows or GNU/Linux platforms touches it in terms of smooth operation and beauty as well as lightness and simplicity with tons of complexity and flexibility. I spent the entire Winter using KDE 3.4 and it just never struck me as having any worthy eye candy that makes it much different from Windows XP. It has the same chunky/clunky icons, buttons and fonts that XP does. At least Gnome is a Mac OS (preX) wannabe with plenty of innovation (ie. lots of stuff it does in truly different and not readily apparent ways). But e17 really just kicks them all aside. It looks like Xgl and Compiss might give e17 a run for the money. But what they don't get that Raster does is the actual purpose behind the features. It's nice to have a 3D cube that you can rotate to move from one virtual desktop to another. But, besides making the virtual desktops readily apparent to stupid users who don't get them, how does it serve anyone? Raster's e17 does a nicer job with its pager. And wobbly windows? Come on! That's neither useful, nor attractive. With the power of Xgl and Compiss, they could do something way cooler... like MY idea from 1992 of closing a window and having it blow off the screen like wind blowing grains of sand off of a surface. Now THAT's at least visually interesting. (If you have the mind to picture it the right way) So... my Winter with KDE. I really only grew fond of one thing in KDE and that was the Konsole terminal app. That's the best written terminal emulator I've ever seen for any desktop environment ever. Tabs, multiple tab synced typing, etc... Just too cool. But that's it. KDM is kinda boring. The "Switch User" feature lacks the polish of Windows XP's, not to mention I've been using Ctrl-Alt-F7-F12 to do this at home for years now. Kontact is fucking ugly. Sorry, but if you need fonts that chunky, you need to go see an eye doctor. Uggh. Give me 10 or 12 point fonts on a 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 screen any day puleez! There is nothing that KDE does that Gnome can't do (and do with more style). And I'm not a fan of Gnome really other than it's much easier to customize than KDE. So I can at least set my systems up so they're easy enough for anyone to use. Can't really do that with KDE now can you...
