Maybe they are realizing that the people who buy more hardware more frequently are... the people who matter most: system tweaking geeks. A lot of us have realized that if you don't need to spend money on software (to be legitimate that is), then that money is better spent on things like CPU/RAM and storage. Or... top put it another way: only the hardware is valuable in terms of dollars.
Thank you. I really think this stuff should be controlled by a global body representative of all the cooperative nations of the world. If the US doesn't want to cooperate, that's just one more slide into irrelevance. While a lot of you might bitch at me saying that I have the "freedom" to make these comments. I have to disagree. I post these comments but do have an inner concern that it's only a matter of time before our administration decrees that these kinds of comments are treasonous. I also know a lot of mouth breathing morons exist in this country that would WANT to see me put away for "treason" just because I say things like, "George W. Bush and his adminsitration are corrupt to the core and I would trust my own child to wolves before I would trust those morons".
Troll? Come on people, I got the conversation rolling there for a little bit. How is that a troll? Lay off the crack. If anyone actually travelled outside of the United States to other countries, you'd know what I'm talking about. Most of the other countries in the world rely on us for very very little these days. I'm serious. They don't buy cars from us. They build their own. They don't buy electronics from us, they buy from Japan, China and Korea. The only thing we tend to be is a useless "middle man" on the world stage. Middle men should ALL be eliminated at the earliest chance because they do, well... NOTHING. Our universtities are a joke because they get continually worse in quality with only a hanful of excpetions. People aren't coming here to get educated anymore. We aren't as "free" as we used to be in the past because our rights are slowly being taken away by corporations and a business friendly corrupt government. Seriously folks. Open your eyes. The US is in collapse. Our economy is totally out of control with the EU steadily growing more powerful. And why? Because the EU does some things better than we do. Our elections are no longer trustworthy and there are a lot of people with money and power who want to make it damn hard to determine the validity of results for their own personal gain. Again, more corruption. This isn't about republicans or democrats or irrelevant third parties. This is truth. And I'm slapping you in the face with it. For the last time, WAKE THE HELL UP!!!
...of the United States' growing irrelevance on the world stage. Trust me. If the US disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow, there would be a brief hiccup and then it would be business as usual. After all, what is it we do for the world exactly, other than bully people?
That children's author mentioned in the article is not likely to be able to deal with that kind of legal issue. Neither are open source developers. Are we saying that no one should do anything unless they can afford any legal repercussions? Who was it who said "kill all the lawyers" again?
My comment in a friend's JE a few days ago explains exactly what this guy is grumping about. Unfrotunately, I don't know if this trend will change. We're breeding Eloi at a faster rate every decade. Wells' fears may well come true in shorter time than he predicted in The Time Machine.
Putting aside the "piece of shit" argument for a moment... Who the hell cares about SAP? I certainly don't. Computers do far more than pointless business crap. Making music and art is much more important than business. If I can get good results in those endeavours with Linux, then that will be my choice.
When was the last time anyone in the FOSS world actually wrote a patch to protect against a known rootkit? Hmm? I'm waiting... The fact of the matter is that the security (while it will never be perfect for ANY OS) in FOSS software/OSes is much better than in the Windows world. Protections aren't written as a reaction to a known problem, they are written before it becomes a problem. Yes, that even means things like the recent Firefox revelations. There are no known exploits, just holes that could be used to exploit. In the Windows world, more often than not, there are several exploits utilizing a hole before it's patched. If they were to change their development model to FOSS, a lot of those holes would get cleaned up faster. End of story.
Sir. I cannot believe your claims for the simple matter of the fact that the Linux kernel has not yet been proven to pierce the veil of time and space. If Windows XP cannot manage time and space properly as you purport, then Linux clearly cannot as the Linux corporation has no R&D budget due to the non-profit nature of the beast. Anyone who makes such claims is most obviously blowing hot air and doesn't know what he is talking about. The only time that the Linux corporation will be able to make such claims is when Microsoft achieves it first, but winds up turning Ballmer into a baby man due to a mishap while trying to use iTunes on their time altering OS to guess the next big rock and roll hit and cash in on investing in the act. Then, and ONLY then will Linux be able to lay such a claim and not belaughed out of the forum. But I suggest... No, I strongly assert, that you care full of beans!! Withdraw your mischevious statement this instant, or I will challenge you to a duel so we can settle this like gentlemen.
...but I think Babylon 5 should have been left off. I'm sick and tired of "tough guy/girl" scifi. If the future is populated by assholes who would rather "kick ass" than apply intellect to solving a problem, then I really would rather hope all sentient beings nuke themselves before then. We should all be striving for intellectual perfection and the abandonment of all violence, selfishness and greed. That's why the best of the Star Trek series (TOS, TNG and Voyager) are happily on the list. The one abberation is DS9. Too much strife and war. And "tough guy/gal" antics. I can't stand that shit. The world isn't made of people who "kick ass".
Ahhh... that makes more sense. I hadn't read that into the article. I guess that shows you the beauty of Unix. It really takes away from the feeling that platforms are different outside of certain physical limitations.:)
But don't let that get in the way. The article makes the claim that the only Unix players today are SCO and Sun. This isn't true. They have forgotten about IBM AIX and HP-UX. Not to mention there are still less mainstream Unix distributions from much smaller companies trying to break into the market.
Is it me, or has Slashdot readership been declining? I know that in the past (at least a year ago) this story would have racked up 1500 replies in about four hours. A lot of trolls complaining about the site. Or some know-it-alls giving their opinions as to why they could have done it better. Or some people saying "me too" to the various replies. But now, it seems like this story has been up most of the morning and there are only a few hundred replies.
I've also noticed that the journal community seems to be slowing down. I know that some people ARE leaving Slashdot based on the disappearance of a few friends. So, what's up? Yeah, we all know that Slashdot can suck at times because of the user base. But is there any place that actually shows you usage stats for Slashdot? I'm guessing it's usage is decreasing. If so, there's got to be a reason for it. Is there another site (not kuro5hin) that is drawing users away? So far I haven't found a good substitute, otherwise I'd leave too. But where else can you get into long, drawn out flamewars with people you don't know on *nix related topics?
Spoken like a guy that's never gonna have a healthy relationship with women. While others might think you're trolling, I have met people like you. They're all terribly unhappy and have attempted suicide several times. Tip for you: Down the road... not across.
That will never work. Hehehe, for one thing, I don't see Exchange happening with the Slashdot crew. I'm not even going to go into what a decent MTA is, but I will say Exchange still isn't carrier grade. What is to keep trolls from signing up for multiple accounts on the Slashdot server? If they're willing to set up mutliple hotmail.com accounts, I don't see why they wouldn't sign up for multiple slashdot.com user mail accounts. Is there something I'm missing here? How does Slashdot know that someone has already signed up before? What do you propose for authoritative ID? Their IP address? That obviously won't work. A snail mail address? What about privacy concerns? I suppose if you did use snail mail, it could work unless you're dealing with a real estate investor who happens to be a Slashdot troll which is probably a VERY rare thing. But would you feel comfortable with an online forum having your REAL address in a database? Especially a forum that doesn't have the threat of huge lawsuits over its head if they carelessly handle your personal info like, say, a bank? I think your plan will not work.
But don't you know... "uninformed speculation" is what passes for "fair and balanced" these days? If it's good enough for the president then it's good enough for/.;P
Not true. I've installed firefox as a regular user in/home/my_dir/.approot/firefox and it worked just fine. Firefox cares not where it is installed nor by whom. (How's that for screwed up phrasing?;) )

You obviously are in need of a humour transplant. I would donate mine, but I'm just too addicted to it. ;P Anyone else feeling charitable?
As opposed to insane neocon Americans?

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you sound like a regular jackass. (Obligatory Jerky Boys reference)
Asslobster? I prefer chocopipe myself, but if you want to go calling people Asslobsters, that's your own look out.
Titanic... couldn't be sunk
Windows 2000... unhackable
RedHat Server 2007... uncrackable
Don't think so...
That is all.
