    The classic /. whine. Microsoft must be bad, a court said so. But if when that court upholdes patents, or the DMCA or anything we don;t liek the courts are obviously too stupid to understand technology situations.

    It's pretty sad how often OSS projects are nothing but a clone of a commercial product. Isn't there supposed to be innovation int here?

    There are several XP and 2K3 backup products that don;t need to worry about this. They can backup the system on the fly without worrying about open handles and so on using the API's supplied for this purpose.

    True enough ... but I do see Redhat, Novell and IBM doing it. In other words people who have $$$ at stake in the sucess of Linux absolutely do use FUD to make their point.

    Then you get to add in all the semiu-religeous zealots out there who spread anti-MS FUD for free just because they think it's all part of "la revolicion!" and will somehow help them download more music.

    You're dreaming if you think there is no pro-Linux spin/fud machine. Hell, Slashdot exists entirely for this purpose.

    But responding to MS seems to be the only thing that drives many in the Linux camp - so why would /. cater to any other audience?

    Look. /. is making a TON of money whipping people into a frenzy - and then showing Microsoft ads on the pages.

    They do this without having to actually put any effort into editing, improving the code or being standards compliant. In other words, they can pay lip service to their audiences prejudices and spit in their face all the rest of the time.

    And people will suck it up.

    Hey! There's an idea. It's almost like sometimes you have to pay people to work on something ... especially if it isn't the fun parts of something.

    So you could get some money from the users, and use that to pay the developers... now what does that remind me of?

    If XWindows discusses this: "Wow, this is the future of the desktop! OSS leads the way!"

    If Apple discusses this: "Apple is so cool! This is why the designers all love it! Apple rocks! Apple invented the MP3 player ya know!'

    Isn't this just another anti-trust lawsuit in waiting?

    It is if the OSS zealots have anys ay in it. I think in the end thats their plan - complain long and loud about MS products, then sue them for trying to fix any problem as "anti-competative".

    * When MS didn't have spyware removal built slashbots complained.

    * When they added it and might charge the bots complained more that it shoudl be free

    * Now that it's free the bots will scream for a lawsuit

    They knwo that if they let MS do what MS is good at (technology, improvements, getting things right over time) it will crush Linux. The only hope they have is to run to the goverment for help.
