No country would start a war with the USA. Not now or in twenty years. Just look at the USA's "defense" budget compared to the rest of the world _total_..
Um, wake up we are at war on several fronts.
We have organized entities trying to kill us. ( perhaps not overly effective to date, but that isnt the point ) We have organized countries trying to crush our economy.
Futility? I think they just solidified it, even tho it defies logic that it was actually *you* doing the update ( or download ). An IP proves nothing other then where the crime/alibi occurred, but opens up a lot of people of false accusations, convictions and jail time for something they didn't actually do.
And it didn't require any "really expensive hardware, or very complex and invasive modifications" to do it. Not saying its going to run on some old beat up Pentium Pro from 10 years ago, but the hardware i see it run on every day isn't out of line for a modern data-center.
And it requires ZERO changes to the OS.
( at risk here of sounding like a Vmware fanboy, but come on.. at least they can present facts when tooting their horn )
And a bunch of others. Just an FYI the world does not circle around the LInux/Microsoft rivalry. Some of us are in neither camp and just want to get our jobs done, without all the bickering.
'There's a doctrine called "fair use," which we believe to be challenged in the courts and would bar it altogether,'
Great, you overpaid blow hard, put up or shut up so we can goto court and shut your sorry ass down once and for all.

It's like threatening to not let a dealership sell your line of cars because they offer LoJack as an option on other models.
DRM is not the devil. It is a tool. The sooner we stop crying about buzz words and instead actually do something about how they are used, the better off we will all be.
voting with your pocket book would be one appropriate way of 'doing something'.

. In the future there will be entire groups of historians specialising in breaking ancient copyright to get an incite on our culture.
I doubt it. One of 2 things will happen :
1 - they really wont care... 2 - they will be advanced enough that any DRM we cook up with be child's play to get around ( as it is now with current DRM tech. )
Is more like it. I have been burnt by more then one commercial product lately.
But of course, if they fail, they aren't liable in the least. its a lot like tossing money out the window for insurance that wont do anything when you have a accident.
It also kills off older hardware that was perfectly fine for rendering server side processing, but will choke with this move back to client side ( which personally, i think is the wrong direction, but that is a different discussion )

How do YOU define war?
Well that's just it you can't build a razor wire wall and laugh as people cut themselves trying to get through it.
In war, yes, you can.
Ya the business model Apple uses will never work. Ya..
Like his dad.

Sort of like that old mini bus the church has down the street that they take to mexico during the summer?
That you can prove, today. Tomorrow is a totally different story.
Why are they wasting time with this, do they know something the general pubic hasn't been told yet?
This has bad decision written all over it, and will only serve to stifle people in the future.
That depends on which side you are on.
For the people hosting ( or governments that want to butt in ) there is plenty of control.
Don't worry, in 6 months we will have another buzz word we can hate and cloud will be history.
Now you see what the push was all about to move towards all digital tv .. gotta upgrade and get all these great DRM features in the hardware.

Ok, then, so the problem is what again?
They are giving people choice. That is good. When they start mandating, then we can talk.

It sounds so basic that you really don't need to see the application to prevent it from hurting you.
So, don't run windows, encrypt your drive with hidden partitions and turn the thing off when the cops arrive.
Then you go to a "doctor" who gets payed only as long as you are sick.
Odd, mine gets paid for regular checkups when i'm healthy.
For my wallet ...
Lets wait until the case is decided on before we get all worked up about it. Remember you can sue anyone for anything, but winning is another story.
Common sense may prevail here.
