We have a source of unlimited ( well, practically unlimited ) fusion power plant now.
Its called The sun.
Why not work on technologies that use what we got now, instead of wasting it on research that most scientist agree will never realize even a 1:1 power ratio?
Did i at all comment on my feelings about the current administration's handling of things? No.
I only explained that what we see today isn't the result of the current administration. I was speaking facts of how the economics work, not making a political statement of any kind.
Be Bush's polices good or bad ( i wont get into that debate at all ), we wont feel its true effects until some time into the *next* administration.

VNC works with 128K to get a desktop, but id rather use native X11. ( seemless windows, cut/paste to the local machine, etc etc )

Due to the speed of remote X across my cable wire, i am using VNC ( via SSH ) to get by. ( with VNC running as a daemon off inetd )
But, its a bit overkill and isnt as seemless as id like it.
Dont think the industries wouldnt do that if they could.
But since its not practical to do that, they will do their best to attack the end points, and turn them into simple restrictive media devices, under *their* control.
I think you need to go back to school and learn about the delay between action and reaction.
Today we mostly are experiencing the results of the Clinton fiscal policy. ( effects of the current war not included of course as those effects are felt faster then normal fiscal changes )
Much as the Clinton years enjoyed the results of Regan's polices.
That the DMCA will fall into play if you merely tell someone how to refill their cart.
And yes, it still covers if you do it at home, in your basement where no one else knows but you and your dog. Patent infringement doesnt require you to profit. ( now catching you, if only you and your dog knows, is another issue. )
Giving a company the power to decide if your paid for device goes *poof* one day is bad.
The first mistake they make, expect a suit.
Also, what about people that dont have internet, i guess they are just out of luck and cant watch movies at some point if blu-ray becomes 'the standard'?..
Most people out side the hard core tech sector could care less about the sco debacle.
there are still a LOT of sco installs out there, and will continue to be.
MySQL wants a piece of that pie.
Now, back to what you were saying: sure, us around here wont come near them again.. but we around here probably arent making them a lot of cash either. ( actually im a postgres fan, but the point doesnt change )
Worst case, you just take the output of your 'authorized' sound card, and feed it into a 'unencumbered' PC ( or other digital recording device that hasn't been attacked by the DRM-beast ) to record it.
Sure, eventually 'unencumbered' devices will fade into a distant memory, but it gives us a few more decades of 'freedom' at least.
And yes, i also realize that the hard core among us will *always* get around these silly limitations, but the common man wont have a chance in hell in another 10 years..

I havent managed to get it working under freebsd yet..
But it does look like its got promise. I tried the demo once, and was impressed.
That might make remote X11 useable on a cable modem..

I cant think of any place on earth that has not hosted a natural disaster at one point in history.
Be it flood, tornado, drought, blizzard....
Though i agree one should not willingly move into places that are OBVIOUSLY at risk, there really is no 100% safe place either.
I think that is a bad thing to implement, as it will create a bunch of small 'freenets', not one large community.
What use is it to just share your political feelings with your friends, which already know?

Its not the man, its the system.
You need to get over your irrational dislike for the sitting president, regardless of your excuses.
Wouldnt the original sources fit on a floppy?
Still cool tho.

That are illegal due to other reasons, ( mostly the anti-drug campaign ) not due to some lame 'patent infringement' excuse.
But, yes, in this corporate age it will stick.
We arent allowed to own anything in this 'new world' they are creating.

Why would they do this? To make money perhaps?
MySQL is a business.. they want more mareket.. this gives them more..
I could be wrong ( cobwebs in the memory banks ) but i do belive there were SNA cards for the PC long before Novell came around..
Id call hooking to a mainframe as 'viable networking'. Considering that is where your email was ( PROFS ) and your *real* applications... ( TSO )
No, now that microsoft has abused a semi-democratic society and come out on top, it serves no purpose to them.
A dictatorship is what they are shooting for now. ( as much as a coporation can be a dictator )
Citizens dont exist in this new future of theirs. We are to all only be indentured consumers.
Become president, then he can stop all these 'rogue' states ( and companies ) from not feeding the microsoft trust fund.
"Its for this countries safety and security that i am enacting this groundbreaking 'data format security act'..."
Why not get a real pen to carry? ( as in a fountain pen ).
Hmmm Iv'e been saying that for a long time now.
And todays lesson: Dont live in a damned bowl under sea level and near the ocean..
