  2. Is this a trick question? on Solutions for Small Business VoIP? · · Score: 1

I have to ask the obvious question here, WHY, you don't tell us WHY? VoIP = Doesnt "MEAN" anything to most people besides "Cheaper". So is that what you are after? Shifting costs around using Asterisk is fine, playing it safe and buying a commercial product is fine. But the real question is WHY? What are your calling patterns? Some small businesses will be better off handing out cell phones and doing bulk purchase of in/out bound minutes over a fixed configuration solution that will require training. So, before all the techno tower of babble.... Answer the question -- WHY? Cheaper? More Applications? Get you closure to your customers? Make you more Competitive? Voice is just another application in the data center to be managed based on a clear vision and determinable ROI.....

I have a Linksys Router that provides QOS on a per port (physical or logical) basis. Attaching ANY terminal adapter to the port will support the QOS function. I actually have a Lingo Terminal adapter plugged to port 4 of my Linksys router with QOS enabled and have found the voice application works well. You can replicate this on each port as needed.

  8. Google uses SMS to quitely build cell database? on Google Launches SMS Search Service · · Score: 1

For every innovation Google comes up with they must have a core economic reason for doing it. 1.) Do they see the cellular carriers as a big customer for targeted advertising? 2.) Why do they need to build a large database of cellular phone numbers and active customers? Are they seeding the market? 3.) What is the tie in with gmail? Sure, I tried the service and it works, works nicely but after about six tries I realized that I just gave Google my cellular number and a whole bunch of other "information" about me and my habits. Careful what you give away in return for something useful and *free*.

  9. Re:PBX/VOIP Suggestions Please! on Will VoIP Kill the PBX? · · Score: 1

Single most powerful application for attorneys is the ability to locally store/database voicemail. Second most powerful application is self hosted conference calls. The most important HID (Human Interface Device) is point and click/ Drag and Drop capabilities of the Unified communications Desktop. Most IP-PBX's only give you a dumb graphical representation of the phone on your screen, that doesnt fly. Integration with your billing platform should be easy, XML on the phone is *hard* and makes the phone smarter than it need/should be. As you have it, the client base is in Outlook/Exchange, so from either the server side (PBX) sending CDR (Call detail records) indexed by either CLID, CID or Extension against and into the billing platform is one way to go. Alternatively, use the Outlook and Exchange system and tie the billing platform at that point so long as there is a client desktop application that integrated with Outlook, VB Object calls (easier to implement and manage). Shameless plug....... I work with Sphere Communications www.spherecom.com... a very good MS Outlook/Exchange integrated IP-PBX with a good number of Law Firms using the system for these vary functions. They have over 10 years of ATM/IP PBX experience.
