but I think it'd be really slick to make still suits, not to mention portable audio players, PDA, and even laptops that are powered by energy that we are generating anyway.

Trust me, if my computer (or PDA for that fact) were to run off the energy I make sitting at my freak'in desk, we all would be in a world of hurt.
The only excersize I get is running to the bathroom several times after that Super BigGulp of Pepsi!
The only other thing that gets my fingers moving fast, is seeing a new article appear on SlashDot without any postings yet! :-)

  3. Gee....I guess I've been a pirate since Jr. High on Next Restricted CD Coming Soon · · Score: 1
Well, I guess I've always been a music lover, but too cheap to by a record, or CD for that matter. I started "pirating" music when I was in Jr. High back in the 60's. I got one of those freakin cool portable cassette tape players and recorded music off the radio. I even saved up for a "high tech" external microphone with the switch on it. That way I could cue up the songs, and argh...that darn DJ always yapping in the last few seconds of the song!!
What I'm trying to say, there has always been copying of music, only the last few years it has been in the spotlight with napster. All along it was widespread, but has happened in a less than "in-yer-face" way via the internet.
Who is going to kick down Jonny's bedroom door just because he is taping off the radio or making a few tapes from a record for his friends? Nobody. Did record sales suffer back then? No.
What are the music cops going to do next - insist that there is a certian percentage of static played on all radio stations, just to make the music uncopyable? Or better yet, each radio station must play a ear splitting screech every 10 seconds to make it impossible for anyone to record off the radio, much less off a CD. Gimmie a break!

  4. What about the small guys... on Open Spectrum: Free the Airwaves · · Score: 1
One thing you forgot to mention, is the bidding wars that went on, and the premium prices small companies paid for over priced spectrums. This caused many smaller guys to go out of business or loose the spectrum because they couldn't make the payments.
Naturally, when the whole thing came tumbling down, the big telcom guys came in and picked up the pieces for pennies on the dollar. Oh, and did I forget to mention, all this was to line the pockets of a few big players, and the US Govt. (of course)

But if your a real die-hard, you can download a few MPEG episodes Here at around 220 meg per episode (also 56k'er versions available for the bandwidth impaired)

Well I was at CostCo today, with te full XP license going for $189.00 -- with no option for an upgrade path. Most consumers will follow the least path of resistance -- Just buy a full license and for the second computer, just buy another freakin full license!! (Me thinks this was Micro$ofts evil plan anyway)

Most people are not going to jump through extra hoops just to save $10. Just like that rebate on that 56k modem that you forgot to send in 2-3 years ago -- the manufacture is betting against you actually sending the rebate in! Ten bucks x # of XP purchasers = more ca$h in MS's pocket. My 2 cents worth.

I think that the Linux distros are going to become more and more alike, and the Linux companies are going to turn into service based companies providing consulting services only. Well another great post that went over my head! :-)

Although I did enjoy the paragraph on filesystem journaling -- After pulling my one of my [gasp] Win2000 servers offline the other night to do a defrag, I could appreciate the fact that a developer could tweak Ext3 to do some neat things. (ahh, for linux, at least) Like when I save and resave files on a test server, the journaling approach could be made more efficient by only saving the changed data! (not the whole freakin fragmented file)

Now the question could be -- Is there someone who will step up to the plate and produce several custom filesystems. The article points out that there is no "best" file system, but given the options, I'm sure the teckie endusers could tweak settings to meet their needs, be it server or desktop.
