  1. a voice recorder on Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Note-Taking Device For Conferences? · · Score: 1

I used Olympus WS-110 voice recorder for recording the conference proceedings and using a paper pen for taking notes. Later, when I needed to refresh my memory, I could go back to the recordings.

  2. hiring and retaining on Outsourcing Growing Beyond India · · Score: 1

engineers will start a project, get a few months' experience, and then bolt for greener pastures. There has been a thread going on in the india-gii list about hiring and retaining talented coders in india. My own take on this issue is here, which says " Job satisfaction is very important and goes a long way in retaining employees. Here is a list of questions to gauge one's job satisfaction that I saw on a mailing list
    • Do I know what is expected of me?
    • Do I have the right materials and equipment I need to do my work right?
    • At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
    • In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?
    • Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?
    • Is there someone at work who encourages my development?
    • At work, do my opinions seem to count?
    • Does the mission/purpose of my company make me feel my job is important?
    • Are my co-workers committed to doing quality work?
    • Do I have a best friend at work?
    • In the last six months, has someone at work talked to me about my progress?
    • This last year, have I had opportunities at work to learn and grow?
These question might be from a Gallup poll.
  3. So many ads, so small attention span on A Tool to Tally Podcast Listeners · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the best features of reading rss feeds using your feed reader is the absence of ads. The few podcasts that I listen to are mostly about programming and virtually free of any 'product placements'. I think the popularity of the podcasts come from the fact that it allows people to share their thoughts with someone else, and maybe make a difference in the life of the listener (it may be a small difference, for example talking about a new technique for input filtering when using PHP). Very few people do podcasts to make money. If the podcasters that I listen to start putting in ads and start putting restrictions on whether I can forward it ahead or not, I will not think twice before dropping it.

  4. The law has been rejected on EU Closer To Rejecting Software Patents · · Score: 1

  5. All that (R) and (C) on Microsoft PR Rep is the Switcher · · Score: 1

All the proper use of (C) and (TM) and (R) was a giveaway that this was not drafted by some indivual user. Remebering to putting those (C)s and (R)s and (TM)s at ooh so trim and proper places was a dead giveaway that it was drafted by some professional. They have even been appended at the end of "Outlook Express" as in OutLook Express (R).
