  1. Seapine Surround SCM on Document Management and Version Control? · · Score: 1
Disclaimer: I happen to work for Seapine but we actually have something that could fit the original poster's request. Also, all these words/opinions are mine, they haven't been sent from marketing or sales or anything like that.

Surround SCM has all the goodies that one would normally associate with a source control tool. (Atomic check-in's, branching, diffing, merging, blah blah blah.) It also has some added features for document revisioning, particularly MS Word docs, that could be very helpful. It is actually integrated into Word so that check out's and check in's can be done without ever leaving the word processor. It also supports diffing of Word documents which I know we use a lot for all the reams of documentation we create.

There is both a full GUI client and a command line client and it comes on Windows/Mac OS X/Linux/Solaris. (For the curious it is written with Qt.) It might be worth checking out.

As the good friend who liked Gaiman's work referenced in the parent I most certainly agree that this is a book to check out.

Talk about a weird Monday morning. I'm innocently reading the slashdot comments when I come across one that matches exactly a conversation a buddy and I had. While I'm thinking "that's weird" I look up at the poster name to see that it is my friend. What a small digital world.

I'm a fan of Gaiman too, American Gods broke up the mind numbingness of my last US to Europe to US to Europe to US business trip.

That being said, if you can find a copy of the comic "Seven Deadly Sins" (circa 1989) which was a book that had different writers for each sin I strongly suggest picking it up.

Gaiman's section on Sloth was one of most unique and brilliant uses of the comic medium that I have ever seen.

I have a vague memory of the Obi-wan/Anakin fight being listed on the boxes of one of the figures that was re-released about 5 or 6 years ago. I definitely do remember a guy that I worked with about that time being a little miffed that that sort of information was given away on a toy.

For what's it worth though, it could be from anywhere. My brother got me that universe of Star Wars book a few years back and it made reference to Chewbacca's family. (And they were only seen once, in that dreadful Holiday Special.)

Instead of a bridge the example of a Xerox machine should be used, something that takes input and gives output, but more importantly has a bunch of moving parts that consistently break down.

The reason that law offices have rows of copying machines isn't just because they make massive amounts of copies, its also because they realize they need backups when one dies.

It actually is called Loft Story. I have been in Paris numerous times this year working on a project and that was one of the things on TV *all* the time.

Of course, that was the only thing about it in English, all the contestants spoke French. (Which really cut into my ability to know what was going on with my virtually non-existant French skills.)

  7. Re:Why this is still a bad thing on UK ADSL packages Announced By British Telecom · · Score: 1

Sounds very much like how Cincinnati Bell's ADSL service used to work when they first started out. They too used NAT all over the place so really only basic (web browsing, e-mail etc.) online applications worked. Things like video conferencing and a lot of games just didn't function.

To make matters worse people weren't able to reliably connect because the connection ratio was 2.5:1 (I shudder to think what 50:1 would be like.)

The good news is that things did improve after a while, connecting was easier and they canned NAT. Baby steps I guess.

Is it just me, or are we seeing with the last couple of articles posted today, that the world is coming to real crossroads as far as broadcast entertainment goes? The TV networks are suing iCrave, the RIAA is suing the Napster peoeple, by the end of day I'll probably have a lawsuit against me for something.

I have no doubt that the lawsuits will come to some conclusion, someone will cease and desist, and some lawyer will get paid. But what's real interesting is that you can't sue everybody, and I'm sure someone will fill the void once iCrave and Napster are gone. What's the broadcast status quo going to do then?

The ADSL Forum has a VDSL FAQ that explains more fully the wide speed differences.

I know that here in Cincinnati the ADSL coverage misses a lot of people because they are out of the 18,000 foot-from-the-CO range. I can only imagine what the coverage would be like (actual I can, there would only be a handful of subscribers) if the distance was even the 6.5MB 5000 feet.

I would have to imagine that this will be one of those technologies that is really cool, but not economical to roll out because of its limited coverage area.

Here in Cincinnati that's how our setup has been from the beginning. (PPP) Cincinnati Bell has recently changed their network architecture so that it acts more like bridging but some things still don't work. (VPN most notably.) A great resource for folks that are having problems opening up ports and things is this page by a guy who used to have DSL here. His advice was so good that he got hired up by a broadband startup. :-)
