Elm is an old favorite of mine, and some people prefer mutt. Both of them are unix programs, but as I understand it, Windows is POSIX.2 compliant, so there shouldn't be too much trouble building them on w2k.
The real problem you may have is that confronted with a command line interface, many windows users get confused. I used to work in tech support and people were always trying to use the mouse on apps that were running in a command shell. Needless to say this caused a lot of frustration.
I would like to enter this, I have a keen interest in amateur hydraulics, and I think I have a chance.
My vehicle would probably be a three-wheeler made primarily from balsa-wood, with ceramic skateboard bearings (coated with a thin film of latex for wheels. I figure if I can minimise the weight of this thing, and keep the rolling resistance down then I am in with a good chance of winning
I just hope they let American Residents enter the comp. I cannot wait to get going on this.
I mean, think about it. This is what users of Microsoft products want. They want to live in some isolated world, where nothing is offensive, and everyone runs the same OS.
I wonder if Microsoft have added any of their own definitions ? Innovate, Compete, etc I would like to see their definitions of those words:-)
Finally our so-called representatives get to hear the full story. They should never underestimate the lobbying power of the free-software community. We are like a sleeping tiger. We do not want to cause trouble, but you should learn not to mess with us !!!
I want a 24-bit soundcard so I can rip my CDs at a higher resolution. MP3 does not have to be lossy. You can set how much disk space you want each track to use by changing the bit rate. Being a bit of an audiophile, I notice things like poor sampling rates and compression artifacts.
Those guys at Microsoft are not content with dominating the market for browsers, now they want to screw it up for anyone who doesn't use their cruddy software.
They probably think they are doing the world a favor by pointing out the "problems" with other browsers. What a bunch of a**h***s.
Why do people still think they are cool ? As a corporation they are almost as unethical as Nike
It looks kind of complicated though. Are you legally allowed to hack a set-top-box ? Doesn't the DMCA prohibit this ? I am sure when I signed up for cable, they explicitly stated that the cable company owns the set top box.
Mind you, I guess if they have no real way to find out what you have done then the DMCA doesn't come into it. What kind of soundcard to these things have ? Is it 16-bit or 24-bit ?
If I was making a home mp3 component, I would want one of the newer 24-bit soundcards like the new soundblaster.
I don't want to install a firewall, I am not a tech-savvy internet expert. I simply want the default positon of Microsoft's OS's to be that they shut the f*** up, and let me tell them what to do.
Its like Microsoft have no comprehension of how to write a protocol. Take a look at lan-manager. That thing just chats and chats and chats. It looks like it was designed as a kind of laplink protocol where you didn't care how much bandwidth you used because you were the only 2 machines on the net.
When will they learn. Protocols should speak when spoken to. They should never broadcast, and they should certainly not connect to websites without the express consent of the person using the PC.
Why would they bother to use windoze to surf the net when they have konqueror AND mozilla AND netscape available on the Linux platform ? It does not add up.
I mean, everyone deserves a second chance (except perhaps Bill Gates). I'm not sure about whether I would want these guys working on my E-commerce applications, however they would probably be ideally suited to working on community weblogs, or rap music fan sites.
Once we can be sure that they are not going to return to a life of crime, then maybe they should get a chance at the e-commerce jobs. Why not ? After all, as criminals they would have some insight into the criminal mind, and criminal techniques. Just what we need.
Its about time someone stopped patronizing 'kids'. My 13-year old nephew is a regular slashdot reader, and occasional poster. Nobody can tell his age, and he quite frequently provokes a thoughtful discussion, and gets modded up for being Insightful or Informative.
It is one of the great things about the internet: nobody knows you're a dog:-)
More seriously though, one of the problems with children's books is that children develop their reading skills at different times. So we need easy books but on subjects 15-16 year olds will find interesting, likewise we need books for 5-8 year olds which do not treat them like morons, but which have material suitable for their age.
I remember reading Beowulf when I was 9 years old, and I thought it was pretty cool, but it was slightly above my age range.
reasonably secure and prevent it from contacting MS too often
But I want it more than reasonably secure, and I NEVER want it to contact any website without my express authority. Is it possible to prevent XP from ever contacting microsoft ? I am worried about my privacy, and to be honest, I think this feature could be easily hacked to make it contact somewhere other than Microsoft. I am not the only one who is more than a little uneasy about the direction Microsoft are taking with this.
Don't get me wrong, I am not one of those communist linux-or-die zealots. Its just that I don't really trust Microsoft at a gut level. I get the feeling they are up to something, and they are trying to exploit me somehow.
Where do you get the 80% figure from ? Are you trolling me ? No way. I am not a zealot because I promote my OS of choice. Is Bill Gates a zealot because he spends a fortune promoting XP ?
I do not understand where your figures come from, show me some evidence that slashdot readers use IE I simply do not believe your figures.
Anyone reading the content of this site will know you are making this up.
It was aimed at the minority of slashdot readers who use Microsoft products (usually at work), and at anyone who came here via a search engine because they were looking for Windows XP info.
I'm just making sure that Linux does not get overlooked in the stupid hype-fest that surrounds Windows NT5 sp10 ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Windows XP
Pointing out the product activation is a key strategy in my one-man battle to counteract Micro$oft FUD wherever it rears its ugly head.
I think there is an analogy here between the domestic PC, and the 50's automobile which had Fins, and 500cube engines. They eventually got replaced by japanese vehicles (internet appliances) which were cheaper, better made, and got better economy.
Presumably Internet Appliances will one day be in the majority, since there is little cost-justification for todays $1000 general purpose PC.
Anyone who came here to find out about XP, this is just to let you know that there is a choice. You may have heard of Linux. It is free. And it never crashes with a BSOD. And it has many top games available. Oh yeah and did I mention it is free ?
Windows users interested in trying out Linux for themselves should go to LinuxNewbie where they will find resources, and help on installing this revolutionary free OS.
Come on guys, don't follow the blind upgrade trail. Just because Bill says upgrade doesn't mean you have to do it:-)
What about a portable PS/2 ?
on
Portable N64
·
· Score: 1
That would kick some serious portable butt. Especially if it was running Linux:-)
Can you imagine running mame on that thing ? It would be videogame nirvana. The best hardware, the best OS, and the best retro-games. Hard to think of anything more cool.
An interesting couple of sites for analog music fans are propellerhead software (You MUST download the Reason demo - it has to be seen to be believed) and also Jeskola Buzz its a kind of wierdo build your own synth kit.
Buzz is free (as in beer) and Reason is free (as in it doesn't have full functionality) both downloads are well worth the time.
I wonder if they will do to the Itanium what the Athlon did to the Pentium and the Duron did to the Celeron. I can see a real market for cheap 64-bit processors. Lets hope they get their pricing correct ?
After all, your average "Joe the consumer" doesn't know a thing about open source
Although this statement is factually correct, that should not mean that we stop trying to promote Linux at every opportunity.
I see the upcoming launch of XP as a chance for Linux evangelism on a huge scale.
Don't like product activation ? - Linux
Don't want to pay $200 ? - Linux
I have managed to convert three of my friends to mandrake without really trying. Once you explain to them how Microsoft works, its like a light goes on in their heads and they are like, "where can I get Linux ?".
For me at least it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Perhaps if more of us took an active approach to evangelism, there would be even more Linux users than there are already.
Some people are still clinging to their microsoft comforter, but I'll bet product activation makes a few of those people think twice!:-)
It is a SMALL claims court. Compaq would likely settle rather than pay the expensive legal fees. In most events the defendant fails to turn up, and the litigant wins by default.
I don't see why you think Compaq are above the law ?
I am sure that the main reason most people don't switch to Linux is the perceived lack of games on that platform.
Of course those of us in the know realize that all the good games eventually get ported, but it is still a problem selling to 'joe average'.
I think the idea of a wine-based distro is pretty cool. A vmware based distro would be even better. I'm guessing this would not be possible at a retail price point of a 'normal' linux distro because vmware is so expensive.
Lets hope the freemware project delivers the goods as we expect it to.
I think it goes deeper than that. I think it has to do with the use of temporary staff or outsourced staff in call centers.
Once the direct link between manufacturer and consumer has been severed, there is no incentive for the middle-man to offer excellent service. His main job is to deflect the customer complaints away from the manufacturer.
Or it could just be that good old fashioned customer service is a dirty word these days.
Hey at least if Linux breaks someone on a newsgroup will help you from the goodness of their heart. If only atoms were the same as bits in that respect!

So what if I don't have internet access, or access to a phone ? Am I out of luck ? I won't be taking XP with me to the antarctic then.

Slashdot would be so much better if people like you kept their unconstructive criticism to themselves.
As my old grandpa used to say: 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'.
