In fact, you have excellent point. J. Random Luser is going to want everything EXACTLY like (s)he knows from Windoze, right down to the big 'e' and the ability of the browser to render broken HTML (cf. dosius.zzn.com's login page).
I say someone should decompile IE and clone it for Linux.:) Isn't there a Solaris version though?
I don't understand why parent got modded down; that is an excellent point.
I think an ideal license would be one that allowed *unmodified* binaries - that passed an MD5 test - to be distributed with just a Web link to a copy of the source that, when built, produced the exact same binary, but require modified binaries to include the source code.
That would give all the advantages of the GPL without turning off companies.
Seriously though, this is a Good Thing. But I know and you know that larger companies aren't going to go for Linux because the "GPV" bothers them.
I think there ought to be a BSD laptop (no, MacOS X on a PowerBook doesn't count!), if only because I think every Linux needs to have a corresponding FreeBSD - light, truly free, and just as powerful in most cases as its GPL'd competitor.
And I saw a beast rise out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns, and upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw, was like a Leopard, and his feet like a bear's, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power and his throne, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death, but his deadly wound was healed, and all the world wondered and followed the beast.
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast! who is able to war with him!
5 And there was given unto him a mouth, that spake great things and blasphemies, and power was given unto him, to do two and forty months.
6 And he opened his mouth unto blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his Name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the Saints, and to overcome them, and power was given him over every kindred, and tongue, and nation.
8 Therefore all that dwell upon the earth, shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of that Lamb, which was slain from the beginning of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 If any lead into captivity, he shall go into captivity: if any kill with a sword, he must be killed by a sword: here is the patience and the faith of the Saints.
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth, which had two horns like the Lamb, but he spake like the dragon.
12 And he did all that the first beast could do before him, and he caused the earth, and them which dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he did great wonders, so that he made fire to come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men,
14 And deceived them that dwell on the earth by the signs, which were permitted to him to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make the image of the beast, which had the wound of a sword, and did live.
15 And it was permitted to him to give a spirit unto the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast should speak, and should cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast, should be killed.
16And he made all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads,17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath wit, count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.
Ah, Slashdot, land of the ad hominem and home of the trollbait...
*sigh*
I don't have anything to do with BSD other than my experiments porting OpenBSD tools to DOS (!), but my crystal ball shows FreeBSD holding its own...
I like the BSD license better than the GPV anyway. I started work a couple years ago on a project called RMF-DOS (Reduced Memory Footprint DOS), which never got off the ground, but I did it because I felt the world needed a BSD-licensed DOS clone suited for embedded systems and ancient 8086 boxen. I still believe in it. I just haven't had any way to write a kernel for it.
BSD's philosophy is why it endears itself to the hearts of companies better than Linux (this is not intended as a troll or a flamebait), and also, it is why it is not as well-known as the more radical GNU projects and the Linux kernel.
As long as there's a use for it - and as long as there is BSD code in MacOS X - BSD is very much alive.
BTW anyone have the MECC disk (Apple ][+) from 1979, from the Elementary Volume xx diskset - the CNYICN version would be even better - that has OREGON on it? I've been looking for it since '86.
Who the heck modded this down? :)
:) Isn't there a Solaris version though?

Unfortunately you're right.
We need a revolution in usability.

In New York State there is no sales tax on food.
Locally the tax on clothing, games, etc. is 8.25%. (Ouch!)

Then, I thought the PegasOS was an Amiga. You know, the Amiga never sold that well...

Clone the Aqua GUI/API on top of Darwin, presto, MacOS x86.

Aren't there a bunch of unices on PPC? There's MkLinux, Yellow Dog Linux, NetBSD, Darwin...

But V6 UNIX does...(can't get the damn thing to compile!)

In my apartment the electric wiring is so old that I actually have a DC power outlet in my bedroom.
No, seriously. Looks like a 2-prong AC outlet turned on its side.

The reference is to my UID (usotsuki).
BTW, a +2 Off-Topic? Whew! LOL

Where are the BSD laptops? :)

Why not?

It used to be possible for me to help teachers at my high school bypass Bess.
Believe it or not, when I forgot to remove the bypass from a library computer I was then banned forever from their computers.

Good. Now mod me down into oblivion again.

Sorry, but YFI. From the FreeBSD docs:
One detail that the lawsuit did clarify is the naming: in the 1980s, BSD was known as ``BSD UNIX''. With the elimination of the last vestige of AT&T code from BSD, it also lost the right to the name UNIX. Thus you will see references in book titles to ``the 4.3BSD UNIX operating system'' and ``the 4.4BSD operating system''.
So what is really the difference between, say, Debian Linux and FreeBSD? For the average user, the difference is surprisingly small: Both are UNIX-like operating systems. (Emphasis mine.)
-uso.
Proof that BSD is alive and kicking despite the recurring claim that it is dead.
No dead program comes out in new releases.
Ha!

Not possible unless they are based on Commie 64 hardware.

Obviously parent's mods don't grok Spanish (but then again this looks like 6th grade Spanish). Post suggests they use "pen and paper".
