You say they (private institutions) are above the law.
Expelling people from a university isn't illegal.
These guys are interfering with the ability of a person to (in future) make money to feed his family, I would say that's something sanctionable by law.
You're joking right? By that logic no-one in the world should be able to expel, fire, or make redundant anyone, ever.
Certainly, I predict that the word 'avatar' will be on the tips of tongues, if only so that tech journalists can stop adding 'the identity that represents you online'
Do people really speak like that in MMORPGs? The closest to that sort of thing I've played was MUDs years ago, and people whilst not spelling every word out exactly typed out actual full sentences with minimal abbreviations. But I suppose that sort of game encourages fast skillful typing, rather than clicking and drooling.
In fact, this has been done in MUDs for decades, but then it appears something's only new and innovative when it has graphics.
It just proves how the playerbase of MMORPGs are so young and immature that they're all on Slashdot whining about how unfair punishment is, comparing it to the Gulag or Nazi Germany.
And don't forget to mention it to ESPN, ABC Sports, Fox Sports, and all the other networks who use them for their sports coverage.
How the hell would you use a blimp in sports coverage? I can't imagine there'd be much of a camera view, and you can't see anything from there you can't see from within the stadium.
So you're saying that Civilisation shouldn't have had any sequals? You contradict yourself saying that NO games deserve a sequal, then go on to list exceptions...
Imagine if sports games didn't have any sequels, we'd be stuck with fifa 94 and its 2D graphics. Games like madden might have endless rehashed sequels, but would you rather that the only available version was the first one ever made?
There'd be no mario 64, no zelda 64, no final fantasy XI, no world of warcraft, no elite II, not even streetfigher 2.
Maybe we should extend your policy to films, so there'd be no godfather II, and no empire strikes back. How about books, no Lord of the Rings for a start.
There are just as many crap original games as their are crap sequels, and vice versa.
Unfortuanately that would make it too contrived. You wouldn't be exploring a living, breathing world, rather than exploring some ancient historical cave, you'd be exploring an artificial cave made up just to suit you. As if there was a god following you around setting you challenges like in Jason and the Argonauts or something.
It would get a bit dull in the end if the world didn't have any continuity, but was just a series of contrived 'challenges'.
Not really. Larger screens that are further away are easier to focus on, even if they take up the same percentage of your eyes. I'm sat two or three feet away from a 17" screen and it's not exactly comfortable.
The cost of the subscriptions will be higher than anything you save from lower prices.
And it will also mean you can't watch anything casually, you have to pay for EVERYTHING you watch individually, you can't just sit down and flick through the channels to see what's on. You can't watch five minutes of a programme then do something else, because you want to get your money's worth.
Micropayments are an idea that's dead in the water.
Horse hockey! I've been a sysadmin and/or programmer for nearly 20 years and I can assure you that I agree with him fully on the damage that lack of access to new technology does.
Then I'm sure you'd also agree with the damage that can be caused by introducing unneeded technology just because it's new? It's funny how long people managed to work without IM, but now IM's around it's a vital necessity.
I can't count the number of times that I've run into a problem, fired up IM, and asked a friend what I'm doing wrong.
And I can't count the number of times people fire up IM just to talk bollocks to their mates rather than doing any work, but then geeks generally think they should be able to do anything they want with the computer they're using, even if it doesn't belong to them.
1. They don't look any different to me. Both are irrelevent text I'm not going to look at or click on anyway. 2. Google ads fund the bank accounts of Google's already rich hangers-on and shareholders, at least the trojans are innovative. 3. Read my original post: I don't click on any links, why do I care whether it's a Google one or a trojan one? and I don't use Windows anyway.
An advert is an advert, I block them all. I doesn't matter whether it's linking to some porn site or to some site selling digital cameras, it's all bollocks as far as I'm concerned.
Why does it matter to the user whether it's a 'legitimate' Google advert or not?
Don't get too excited, these things are decided by unaccountable, pen-pushing civil servants behind closed doors, and every flavour of the week pop star or sportsman gets one these days.
Criticising Slashdot hate-figure EA, cricising Slashdot hate-figure the RIAA, thinly-veiled criticism of Slashdot hate-figure Microsoft, praising the Slashdot-favourites Google and Nintendo...
Well done, five instances of playing to the crowd and toeing the line in one post, surely the greatest example of karma-whoring in Slashdot history? I don't even begrudge your being modded up because I think that clever cynical ploys should be appreciated.
Hi Steve.
You say they (private institutions) are above the law.
Expelling people from a university isn't illegal.

John Williams is a crap composer.
Certainly, I predict that the word 'avatar' will be on the tips of tongues, if only so that tech journalists can stop adding 'the identity that represents you online'
What was ever wrong with 'character'?
Do people really speak like that in MMORPGs? Not only does discourse possibly deter crime, it is necessary for a free society, protecting the citizens from being oppressed.
Online games are not a free society. They're a dicatorship, you play by the owner's rules. If you don't like it you can go somewhere else.
Games are not the equivalent of a country, they're the equivalent of a private property. The owners can throw you out at any time for any reason.
They don't work very well, they're very fickle, a slight bit of degradation in the signal, or rain, and the picture freezes up for 10 seconds or so.
You can't get teletext either, and it takes several seconds to change the channel.
I'm sticking with analogue, the new digital channels are only full of crap anyway.
Sonic CD has a sequel, called Sonic Rush on the DS
It's crap, you just press 'forwards' and the character runs itself through the game.
So you're saying that Civilisation shouldn't have had any sequals? You contradict yourself saying that NO games deserve a sequal, then go on to list exceptions...

Why are players allowed to make names composed entirely of consonants? Seems like a failure on Blizzard's part.
What happened to the old mantra of 'Legality doesn't equal moralily' that's always wheeled out during the piracy articles?
You pay monthly for Internet access, does that mean you're at the computer 24/7? Does paying rent mean you never leave the house?
Unfortuanately that would make it too contrived. You wouldn't be exploring a living, breathing world, rather than exploring some ancient historical cave, you'd be exploring an artificial cave made up just to suit you. Micropayments are an idea that's dead in the water.
So they exist entirely as a gas of positive ions?
I have found a way to block Google ads.

Um, as far as I'm aware these trojan-inspired ads aren't flash adverts, they're no different to the normal Google ads, so what's the difference?
An advert is an advert, I block them all. I doesn't matter whether it's linking to some porn site or to some site selling digital cameras, it's all bollocks as far as I'm concerned.
