    The right is to a trial by jury, and it's a right of the defendant. The reason for the right is that the jury is the ultimate check on the power of the state to prosecute. If the jury won't convict, tough shit. (of course, we've seen many instances of prosecutors circumventing the double-jeopardy rules by filing new charges when they don't like the jury's decision.)

    The heads only have to touch the film a few times before the emulsion is history.

    We use glass because it's dimensionally stable, easy to make extremely flat, and it's about as rigid as you could want it to be, regardless of whether the disk is spun up or not.

    "Taking 2 weeks to get an XP installation working correctly (versus 2hours for Mandriva) indicates your lack of experience setting up XP. XP does come with a generic PS/2 mouse driver - if it didn't work then you probably didn't have the drivers for your mobo installed. A setup with XP is easy. Install XP, install your mobo drivers, install your gfx driver and then any other drivers for extra hardware (printer/scanner etc.)."

    I've yet to see a patent that isn't anymore than an extension of an idea using a previous technology and applying it to a more contemporary one.

    Try looking up the patent on Xerography, then. People come up with novel solutions all the time, and many of them apply for and get patents on them.

    The problem is that this patent fails the obviousness test about 100%.

    If it's so obvious, why didn't you do it first?

    Implementing floating-point framebuffers is non-trivial problem, and SGIs solutions to doing so are why they deserved the patent.

    Nope. Making a display system work with floating point is a pretty massive undertaking technically, and I'm sure it resulted in quite a few patentable inventions along the way.

    Singapore has no natural resources to speak of, and they've built an industrialized economy. North Korea's problem isn't a lack of resources, its problem is that the country is ruled by the last Stalinist dicatorship on earth, and the regime is far more interested in maintaining its power than feeding its people.

    The best thing China can do for the people of Korea, is have one of their agents in the country put a bullet between the eyes of that repugnant little twerp who's running the joint.
