    They didn't seem to think there was anything unusual about asking an interview candidate to spend an entire day doing pair programming with them on their own codebase.

    Heh... I had a similar situation a month or so ago. Headhunter cold-called me, told me how hard they're looking for people with serious amounts of Mac experience, so I went to see the customer (startup over in Mountain View), product wasn't terribly interesting, and then the recruiter says they want me to come in for a "coding exercise" that should only take about four to six hours. I told him my rate for very short term projects, and he actually expected me to give them six hours of my time on spec.

    I quit taking his calls.

    Apple does no testing.

    Apple is testing their products all the time, and they don't sample, either. Every unit passes every test before it gets out of the factory.

    When I worked as an Apple repair tech, two out of every three machines off the line would fail and would require immediate refurbishing.

    Bullshit. That kind of failure rate would have put them out of business.

    I can almost guarantee you that Apple does jack shit for actual product testing

    As it happens, I worked in Apple's Hardware Test Engineering group shortly after the iPad shipped, and I know first-hand that you're full of shit.

    Apple are merging OS X into IOS, albeit very slowly.

    Nope. I've been there, and nobody at Apple has any such intention. Features will get passed back and forth between them, but they're very aware of the reasons that Tablet PCs failed, and they're not going to copy MS's mistakes.

    There is absolutely nothing stopping them from selling their hardware manufacturing arm to someone like ACER and then releasing OSX to the market.

    Been there, done that, and NeXT nearly went out of business. Not to mention, how much of a pain in the ass it was to configure Dells or other generic PCs to run NeXTSTEP.
