  1. ironic on Cappuccino PC Round 2 · · Score: 2

It's kind of ironic that he had the tiny computer stolen. If it had been a huge tower, then they probably wouldn't have stolen it. See! All those cables and the heavy case and heatsink are features!

  2. The point? on Cappuccino PC Round 2 · · Score: 4

Now, lest anyone get confused, this thing has to be plugged into a wall. It's not a laptop, so there's no battery.

I can see the point of small, portable computers, but if this has to be plugged into a power socket somewhere, what makes this better to own or use than a laptop, palmtop or even a desktop PC?

  3. Salon.com on What's the Best Online News Story You've Read Lately? · · Score: 2

I think most of the articles at Salon.com are very well-written and worthy of some sort of an award. They tend to look at all sides of the issue and bring up interesting points. I especially like Salon's series of articles about clear channel.

  4. reminds me... on Mad Scientists' Club Returns To Print · · Score: 2

This reminds me of another series of books that I used to read when I was younger. I was wondering if anyone knew the name. I know this may be offtopic but I had a wave of nostalgia. The series that I read is similar to this though.

It was probably in the Juvenile fiction (or scifi) section of my small library. It was the story of how a boy (the name Alvin sticks in my mind but it might not be that) and his single mother live with this professor. (She works as his maid) The professor makes all these inventions which are really cool like a time machine and an electronic dragonfly that is flown by virtual reality. I think he also invented an X-ray machine to see through walls and I remember once they got lost in a cave. Basically the kid was really curious and he always got in trouble by using these inventions.

These were all separate books. It was a bunch of stories. I would be really greatful if anybody knows what I am talking about. This sounds a lot like the "Mad Scientists" club with the kids theme.

  8. nytimes article on Internet-Ready Car · · Score: 1

The main story in last Thursday's Circuits section in the NYTimes was all about this. The byline: "The restless desire to get away from it all has been replaced by an anxious desire to stay connected. And for an increasing number of Americans, that means turning the car into a fuel-injected, free-range workstation. " click here to read.

  11. Mac OS 9 and below on Linux Descending into DLL Hell? · · Score: 2

The way classic mac os does shared libraries is it looks in several different places for them. I know off the top of my head of 2 different places. First, it looks in the directory that contains the application. If it doesn't find it there, it looks in the extensions folder. That way, older apps can have their own version of the shared library. This was necessary for older MS apps. I know my friend used this technique when he couldn't get his X-Files games to work correctly with the new Mac OS.

I bought a really cheap pair of speakers with subwoofer at the local retail store for $20 and I think they sound excellent. I listen to all my MP3s on them and they sound fine even with lhigher MP3 compression and the cheap speakers. I'd rather buy a hard drive or RAM.

Unicode even has Klingon in its standard. What's next: that unnamed Star Wars language? We are definately going to have to change to 64 bits to get all of those Sci Fi languages onto our computers.

  17. simple solution on Employers Who Hold Back Their Employees? · · Score: 1

  18. SDMI on Companies Abandon The Sinking Ship That Is SDMI · · Score: 3
Hmm The consumer has a choice between 2 music players. One has the neat, new SDMI. "It helps the consumer by making sure they are playing only the music that we say you can play!!!!" (with at least 4 exclamation points) Then you have the other music player that costs less and plays every audio format under the sun. Hmm which one do you pick?

I smell another Divx (the Circuit City DVD thing) happening. Of course, one can never underestimate the power of evil marketing executives. Average Consumer: "It's Sony; it must be good!"

  19. OGG on a Mac on Slashback: Offshore, Oratory, Goals · · Score: 1
I use a Mac regularly and there appears to be only one ogg encoder for mac and 2 mac decoders. I use SoundJam MP to play my MP3s and do not want to have to run 2 programs to play my music files. Ogg needs application support badly. Apple could be, I think, the one to implement this. Quicktime, which is very popular, can already play MP3s. When/if Apple implements ogg compatibility, every QT enabled application will automatically gain the ability to play OGG files.

    Then the userbase should expand.

  24. didn't like voyager on Voyager Eulogy · · Score: 1

I generally liked DS9 and STTNG but I never really like voyager. I would watch half an hour of the show and then think to myself "What exactly happened?" There was no real plot. It was so formulaic.

When I saw the finale of voyager, I first thought, "wow that was a good episode". When I thought about it, though, I realized the plot didn't really make any sense. It was only interesting in the last 15 minutes. I have always watched voyager to laugh at the plot holes and the magical abilities of the crew to solve any situation "by emitting trionic radiation" and "varying the shield harmonics".

The introduction of 7 of 9 served only to further cheapen Voyager. I think the best idea would be to make a series of made for tv movies about different crews in the Trek universe like the acclaimed "The Outer Limits" anthology series.

With the new series, I wish it luck but I have doubts. I'm sure one of the first episodes will be having the female Vulcan first officer go into heat. That's always good for ratings.

P.S. A little late on the posting of this story?

  25. computers are evil!!! on Computers Breeding Harmful Fungus · · Score: 1

Computers clearly are dangerous for everybody. Small children should be kept away from them. They will kill you before you even realize it. You should wear a combination gas mask/radiation suit when within 50 feet of one. Computers are polluting the environment too through our landfills.

    They must be stopped!

    P.S. I hope you realize that's sarcasm.
