    Yeah really. The flagpole at my brothers work got hit the other day. The lighting jumped to the lighting fixtures around the pole, along the lines to the lights (blowing an 8' deep by 50' trench to the building) then fried everything on that entire circuit box and knocking out everything back to the transformer. You have to figure something that's several times hotter than the sun and which makes shockwaves felt for up to 20 miles has to be a bit powerful =)

    Actually my previous employer had SLA's on most of the commercial DSL accounts. They generally were something like 75% of rated line speed to a specific ISP provided test site on their network.

    4,000 to 6,000 Gauss might not be enough. One of Quantum's partners claims you need 7,000 Oersteds (Gauss) to erase 300GB disks. link The newest generation of vertical write HDD's use media with even higher magnetic coercivity and so would require correspondingly higher magnetic fields to erase.

    The latency of HT sucks compared to what? The shared crap bus Intel STILL uses for the Xeon? Or compared to uber expensive offboard transports that are still many times slower? Core is good no doubt, but the recent ramp up in feature count and speed means that the new top of the line Core 2 Duo Extreme is going to use about the same amount of power as AMD's top of the line chips, which is pretty bad considering how trim the Pentium M line was.

    Actually I think Blizzard did a fairly good job of keeping professions in line with everything else in the game. For instance I just made my Robes of the Archmage which are on par with any but the top 1% of raid armor for a mage, they took me about two weeks of casual grinding for gold through quests and some outright grinding.

    ISO and IEEE require RAND (reasonable and non discriminatory) licensing for patented tech in their standards. MPEG, JPEG, and other common media formats are full of patented tech but they are also ISO standards that simply require standardized licensing fees to implement commercially.

    No they don't, at least not if configured correctly. If you don't allow split tunneling then once the VPN is established all traffic to the rest of the world is disallowed, this is not possible AFAIK with simple SSH. This only applies to driver based VPN solutions not SSL based ones.

    If your folks are in one of the covered 21 countries it's pretty damn hard to beat broadvoice's unlimited world for $19.95/month, or if they are in one of the other covered countries there's an expand list of countries for $24.95. No affiliation just a happy cheapskate.

    Some Core 2 Duo C processors will apparently sport an E designation, indicating consumption between 55 and 75 watts.

    75W is comparable to an Athlon 64 FX, for a processor that was designed to be miserly that's a pretty terrible direction to be heading in.

    Intel took a processor that their Isreali design team took a lot of effort to make as efficient as possible and turned it into a power hog because Netburst doesn't scale, great......

    Since he is facing a bandwidth bill of $8,000 per year to run the server that doesn't seem like a very good settlement. I mean does D-Link think that virtually all of those devices will be off the net in less than 5 years, because if not it was a shitty offer on their part. If they do then I know who's products not to buy on technical grounds, and if they don't I know who not to buy on moral grounds =)

    Uh, then why does NIST have this page with step by step instructions on how to setup clients to use nist time servers including time.nist.gov and detailed troubleshooting instuctions for same?

    Actually the complete loss percentage is right on with the original estimates for the Shuttle program. We have lost one flight to technical difficulties (Challenger was a political fuckup, almost every engineer involved said not to launch), which is in line with the original estimate of 1% loss. Now the CEV is a better design with several decades of proven technology behind it so it has a much lower expected loss percentage, but I don't think a new from scratch program started today would be much better, getting to space safely is HARD.

    FYI Quickbooks can be made to work under TS. There are a couple small permissions issues with restricted rights users but you can follow this link to find out what permissions need to be changed.

    Or better yet since it's a MetaFrame setup just publish the desktop and have the ica client pick server from the autodiscovered IP's (when working on a LAN, WAN requires a round robin DNS setup).

    The Prius has been using the same battery tech since 2000 when it was introduced, and they used the same tech during the development of the car which was several years prior to that.

    AC propulsion uses shitty batteris, the Prius battery system is warrantied for 8 years/100,000 miles and costs $3,500 to replace with current dealer pricing (cost is expected to drop as more vehicles are sold). BTW according to Toyota they have yet to record a completely dead battery pack, some cells have died in packs but the charging system can compensate for that.

    The EPA says that the Honda Civic Hybrid gets 51MPG highway for the manual whereas the normal Civic gets 44MPG with a standard transmission.. The difference in price between the two cars is about $4,000 if you compare the fully loaded EX sedan to the hybrid. There is no way in hell that a 15% efficiency gain is going to pay off that much difference in cost over the life of the vehicle. Unless gas hits $5+ per gallon it just doesn't make economic sense to get a hybrid, and with all the nasty chemicals and energy involved in making the battery pack it might not make environmental sense either.

    Toyota has an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty on their battery pack and they are recycled for free (built in cost). That's might not be as long as their typical gas powered car lasts but it's damn good.

    You don't understand, there WILL be another flu epidemic, whether it is H5N1 or another strain. If we do not prepare then we will lose about 5%-20% of the population, so putting the efforts of a millionth of one percent of the world population to stopping it seems like pretty damn cheap insurance. Now should there be all the media hype, not sure but if the population isn't aware then there is little chance of an effective widespread action being manageable.

    You can't do this in a network environment because you can only have one set of ACL's between your machine and a server or other workstation. This is a fundamental problem with the way ACL's and GUID's work currently with SMB and the windows workstation client, does anyone know if Vista fixes this?

    Actually, you can fix quickbooks by modifying the permissions to a couple folders and a couple registry keys. Warning, the idiots at Intuit tell you to give full access to all of HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\, when you really only need to give full access to HKLM\Software\Classes\.qpg, HKLM\Software\Classes\QuickBooks.CoLocator.1 and HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\{E53C85D6-E6D9-4BCF-A6 32-72062A99AA7F} which is the key referenced by colocator.

    That's why PDF is so nice. It's open and documented, and it's an extension of PostScript which has been with us nearly as long as the computer, I have little doubt that I will be able to read PDF formatted documents in 10 years and just slightly more about 20 years from now.
