  1. I fucking knew this would be spun for Brexit propaganda. Thanks for sparking my doubt in all the doomsaying about these articles, they don't sound so bad if you consider their enforcement will be in good hands and that "the end of memes" would finally put out the dumpster fire that is the alt-right.

I'll be looking forward to collect the tears of memespouting racists and misogynists.

  2. It's funny how the alt-right ethnonationalists always align themselves with the worst developers making nothing but garbage games, meanwhile progressive games like Firewatch and Gone Home always go on to be critically acclaimed masterpieces.

You'd think they would finally realize that they are on the wrong side of history, but no, the thought of women and people of color being considered human is just too much for them.

  3. The far right is trying to take over the Internet. on 'It Is a Challenging Time for the Internet: We Must Not Let It Be Undermined' (internetsociety.org) · · Score: -1

It's irritating whenever these articles avoid naming names, especially when the threat is this obvious: republicans, the far-right, white nationalists, etc.

Some time ago Mark Zuckerberg was dragged in front of Congress to be chastised for having the audacity of not allowing Facebook to be used as a platform for hate speech, now the same will be done to Jack Dorsey after the Cheeto Man himself got upset about Alex Jones being temporarily muted for making terroristic threats.

The pattern is clear: far-right white supremacists are trying to take over the Internet so that they can freely inflict hateful and violent speech on marginalized peoples like women, LGBTQIA2, people of color, Muslims, etc.

Progressives have played nice for far too long and allowed these hateful groups to become a real threat to inclusivity on the Internet, influential people now have a responsibility to stop being vague and start naming names.

Trying to remain "neutral" is the same as taking a stance, you're just taking a stance in favor of the status quo, and in a country where the status quo is white supremacy, your stance says more about you than you think.

  5. LOL that article goes straight to crying about Obama trying to take away muh guns.

Tells you all you need to know about the author of this trash.

How ironic that you reference propaganda when trying to condemn propaganda, it's almost like you're projecting.

Also if the media just printed White House press releases like that article says, they would be on Trump's side now.

No, the real danger is in white supremacists, racists, misogynists and the alt-right trying to corrode trust in the media by pushing fake news and "alternative facts", and all because their daddy Trump got offended that the media called him out on his racism, misogyny, sexual assault and child molestation.

I understand the sentiment, but your ableism is uncalled for and, frankly, these days anonymity is doing more for the alt-right than for the people who truly need it.

Maybe only marginalized groups like LGBTQIA2+, women, Muslims, etc. should be allowed anonymity.

  7. Riiiiiiight, because opening the floodgates for nazis, anime pedophiles all all kinds of toxic masculinity is common sense now.

Allowing toxic people to exist in your platform only benefits those toxic people at the expense of everyone else, why do you think nazis, MRAs and gamergaters are celebrating this bullshit?

Oh and con't come preach to be about "muh freeze peach", because you tech bros only care about free speech for nazis, last time I dared to have an opinion on /. I was brigaded and harassed with downmodding to the point my commenting is restricted now. Do you give a fuck about that? Of course not, because "freeze peach" is a codeword for "I want only nazis to be able to speak". So if I don't reply to your harassment now, it's because I'm not even allowed to comment. Y'all are a bunch of fucking hypocrites.

  8. LOL, trying to reason with tech bros is like talking to a wall of privilege.

    Why do I even bother?

  9. Oh look, an MLK whitesplainer, did you know that all Dr King ever did was make a speech that translates to "don't play the race card" in mayovision and then he never did or said anything ever again? Well this is true! MLK was soooooo considerate to white fragility.

Or maybe you have no clue what you're talking about with your Santa Clausification bullshit.

  10. It's like you didn't even read my comment at all.

IT DOESN'T MATTER if you don't know the identity of the person being insulted, we live in a heteronormative, cisnormative, white supremacist patriarchal society where most of the insults used have their roots in slurs by the privileged groups against minorities.

You just used an ableist slur without even realizing, as if to prove my point.

  11. CISgender and HETerosexual are not slurs, but even if they were, neither cis nor hetero people are oppressed enough for the terms to be damaging.

  12. What all the tech bros upmodding this trash comment don't understand is that marginalized groups are hit the hardest by default because they don't have the shield of white privilege, male privilege, cis privilege, etc.

Cishet white males like to use cursing and expressions that are racist, ableist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. and that's why marginalized groups are hit the hardest, for example think about that white supremacist prick PewDiePie casually using the N word as an insult during a stream. Of course using the N word is going to be more damaging to people of color, even if it's used as an insult against someone of unknown racial identity, the N word is still the N word. Same thing for white cisthets using the R word to insult people they consider stupid or casually throwing the T word to make "jokes".

A lot of the insults and "jokes" used in heteronormative, cisnormative patriarchal systems have their roots in bigotry against marginalized groups, no matter who they're used against.

I don't know if you're the same AC I replied to above, I hope so, it would mean this horrible attitude is not so widespread, but I'll repeat myself just in case: NEVER use homophobic slurs, because when you do, you're only perpetuating the oppression of LGBTQIA2 people.

  14. Re:Pure filth and evil on Researchers Are Keeping Pig Brains Alive Outside the Body (technologyreview.com) · · Score: 2

Personally, I'm of two minds on the issue of gender segregation.

On one hand, integration of women into male-dominated spaces helps reduce misogynistic beliefs and attitudes.

On the other hand, opening female spaces to males just doesn't sit well with me, it's like opening up a safe space for victims of oppression so that their oppressors can join in too.

So it boils down to privilege and the patriarchy. Because of the power differential between men and women in a patriarchal society, I believe it's fair to preserve female spaces while pursuing female integration into male-dominated spaces.

  16. Oh sure, let's pretend BLATANT HOMOPHOBIA didn't play a role at all, it was just about freedom of association.
You know what? I'm done with Slashfot for today, this comments section is a cesspool.

Free speech protects you from the GOVERNMENT, genius.
But since you're bringing up expediency, for the sake of argument, let's pretend the 1st amendment refers to all speech: well so fucking what?
Free speech was enshrined because we considered it useful, because the concept came from a time when you had to stand up for what you say, you couldn't just spew hate speech anonymously without consequence. Times have changed, we now live in the age of Trump and online misogyny, homophobia, Islamophobia and all kinds of anonymous bigotry and hate speech, this is not what free speech was supposed to protect.
So what if we reexamine the concept of free speech and whether or not it's serving a good cause?
Now you have no white old man conventions to hide behind, you have to tell me HOW allowing hate speech is going to benefit society at all, particularly oppressed groups like women, LGBT, people of color and Muslims. And you can't do that, you know why? Because these religious invocations of "freeze peach" are just the cries of dying reactionaries wishing to turn back the clock to an era where they could abuse oppressed groups without consequence.

  19. I am so fucking sick of this argument.
Refusing service on the basis of the customer's sexuality is a hate crime.
Hate speech is a hate crime.
These things do NOT contradict each other.
Reddit is complicit in hate crimes for allowing their platform to be used in hate speech, they are either allies to far-right groups or useful idiots for "freeze peach", either way, this cannot be allowed to continue.

Why are so many young men so angry at the world that they want to wreak destruction on it.

As much as toxic masculinity needs to be addressed as a root cause of so many mass killings, this is no excuse to ignore how much the easy access to assault weapons is contributing to these tragedies. Gun control can mitigate the problem immediately, while taming toxic masculinity will take care of it in the long term.

This doesn't help angry young men and only makes the problem worse especially white ones who are told they are the new scum of the earth.

    Oh, you're one of those.

  21. How about you hear it from a former skinhead?

Yes, real, actual nazis are getting more organized and are exploiting the reactionary racism and sexism of the public.

Trying to remain "neutral" in this scenario is just like Drumpf's bullshit of "there are good people on both sides", fuck no, there are no good people on the side of fucking nazis, how hard can this be to understand?
