I understand COMPLETELY where you are coming from, and that you are not in the distribution business. I was trying to point out that leading with your own distribution, or partnering closely with an existing leader would only benefit VA.

I personally believe VA can compete directly against Sun's Workstation Market share. To do this VA will have to work with Unix Workstation customers who are accustomed to the Hardware Vendor providing OS support as well. Providing that OS level of support will be attractive, providing your own distro or closely aligning with a RedHat (etc.), would be more attractive to that same customer.

You want to sell the complete package, not just another Computer. If you are just selling another computer, the customer can go to Dell. If you are selling a complete solution, and provide the best support possible, customers will stay for life.

Sorry for the rant you probably know all this already:) I just think that VALinux is a Kickass company that is poised to take off. I wish them the best of luck

According to the LinuxMandrake folks, you have a bonafide distribution:)

I believe a VALinux distribution could only benefit VALinux. As the number of distibutions is growing quite considerably, VALinux has the opportunity to grab Linux and become "the" distribution offering both Hardware and Software solutions, similiar to a Sun Microsystems. As the number of distributions continues to grow, I think it has a negative impact on potential customers. Customer's interested in Linux are not going to change their habits too much. VALinux has the opportunity to grab Workstation and MidLevel Server Market share from the likes of Sun, SGI, and MS.

As far as RedHat is concerned; the whole "Linux Portal" plan was blown when they failed to aquire the linux.com domain. RedHat Linux Software will probably not make it either. RedHat can make their distribution THE userfriendly distro, but there will always be someone to download all that hardwork, change the logo's, and ask Macmillan to distribute for $20 bucks less. All under the guise of "supporting linux".

I honestly don't think Linux will gain wide acceptance in the business world until a dominant player stands out, VALinux probably has the best chance of being that player (RedHat a close second depending on the choices they make). I personally would like to see Linux gain that acceptance, I would love to be able to use Linux at work, as opposed to just at home.

I don't think you can compare the two, Linux and NT.

NT rode not the "fad train", but the "marketing train" of empty promises. NT can (and will) work if placed in the correct role, however MicroSoft tried to pawn it off prematurely as the "BE ALL, DO ALL" Operating System. I have no doubt that Linux will be able to fulfill any roles it is forced into.

What will hold Linux back are the amount of distributions, coupled with IT Manager mentality. I personally work for a large telecommications company, and ran into some "heat" awhile back for trying to implement an "unsupported" application.

The unsupported application was 'gzip'. I was told 'compress' was the authorized choice.

Companies looking to purchase Linux as an OS Solution are going to look for a dominant company, that can provide all support great and small. You have a few dominant commercial choices, RH, Caldera, and SuSE, however I don't believe they are yet equipped to handle Corporate Support. I think RH may be the closest right now, but my experience with their support has been mediocre.

I believe VALinux will truly be the one to watch, they have a tested formula, selling hardware and OS (own version of linux now). If they can provide the same level, or better support as the Big Vendors (Sun, SGI, HP..etc), they will certainely do well.

  19. My Take on the "Fiasco" and Some Information on Red Hat IPO Fiasco Worries E*Trade Stock Holders · · Score: 2

Ok, first my opinion is the mistake was miscomminucation between RedHat and Etrade, nothing more. Etrade has a set of rules and guidelines for customer's investing in IPO offerings (whether I agree with them or not). RedHat should've checked out what those guidelines were before blindly sending out emails to individuals and telling them to sign up to accounts.

Now what sorta stinks is Etrade's policy, first they do not tell you when the IPO is going to be offered. You have to make a general guess, and sit in front of your computer and refresh the IPO current offering's page. You have about two hours to fill out a ten question profile to see if you qualify. These restrictions have loosened a bit, so more might get in. Etrade "suggests" you hold the stock for at least 30 days, but will not restrict you from selling earlier than 30 days. Be warned if you sell within 30 days, it might effect your chances of future offerings. Companies want long term investors, and they are not going to allow Etrade to offer IPO if Etrade customer's are wannabe day traders.

Also remember Etrade wants you to invest at least 100 shares or $1000 minimum (I am not TOTALLY SURE ON THIS NUMBER but close). If you don't have that kind of money my recommendation is if you have some friends you REALLY TRUST! go in together under one account. Preferbly in the name of someone with some long term trading background, as they will more likely be accepted for IPO offerings. Just say "Hey I got $500, you got $500 let's pool are money together and buy". I would agree beforehand on when to sell, (ie when it hit's $62 a share or drops by $5 whatever comes first).

Whatever you do, don't let the system get you down, and prevent you from making the investments you want. It's to easy to say "Screw this, this is a pain in the ass". Just remember, the system was designed by the Rich, for the Rich. Joe's (and Jane's) like us just have to work harder within the system, and we can do it.

I am really surprised how so many self declared leaders of Open Source are stating that MicroSoft is right. No they are not. MicroSoft is not interested in Open Source or Universal standards. MicroSoft is only concerned with controlling standards, posting quarterly profits, and pleasing shareholders.

If Microsoft is so concerned with IM standards how come they decided to make their IM compatiable with AOL and NOT Yahoo or Prodigy. I will tell you why, because they want access to AOL's 40 Million Users.

Here is what will happen if a standard is set:

Microsoft will adhere to the standard for about a year, that is how long it takes before people drop AIM like a rock, because MSIM has been incorporated into Win99 (released first quater 2001).

MicroSoft will then add "features" that go against the standard, but who cares. MicroSoft is the only one left making the damn thing, because it's another "feature integrated" into their OS.

I am all for Open Source but give me a break. Linux has yet to hit it's first Major Obstacle (Fragmentation), and that should rear it's ugly head pretty damn soon. All these so-called distributions that are touting how their all for open source, until one day they wake up and say "Oh shit", we can make money from this and all we have to do is download RedHat, add KDE, and compile with PGCC. Now their offering their distributions in stores for $29.99.

About the only Company I see "making" it from Open Source is VaLinux. VA sells hardware right? wrong, go check their webpage, no more RedHat, now you get VA OS Linux 6.0. One stop shopping, hardware, and OS, with support. Now a company doesn't need to worry about BlueHat, or GirlDrake or anyone of the 100+ distributions that will be available. All they have to do is get their OS from their Hardware Vendor.

But who cares, between Stallman bitching about the Damn name of an OS he didn't write, to Perens whining about ESR for God only knows what, or ESR and this blind, noforsight support of MS, and the X number of other times he's jumped the gun on something only to release a public "amendment" to his orginal statement(apple open source anyone).

    peace.
