We had signs plastered everywhere saying that "Help fight shoplifting. It hurts sales, and without it our prices would be even lower."

What a bunch of bull. Even if you managed to completely elminate all shoplifting from all Drug Fairs throughout the country, the prices wouldn't even dip. They would keep on asking for the same price, and just rake in the extra percentage of profit every month. Sure it's really bad in some places, but they're not going to lower prices for a stupid reason like that.

It's just like the situation with the taxes. If, by some miracle, they got 99.9999% of the country to pay their taxes (and to not cheat), our returns wouldn't be affected at all (well, maybe an extra $50 USD or some small amount). They'd just keep the extra and buy more toilet seats for the Capital building or some nonsense thing like that. I doubt that any of it would go to our National Debt or even the National Budget.

It's capitalism at work. Bitch about prices and taxes being high because of criminals, but keep the rest if the situation improves itself.

Personally, I'm strict about paying my taxes on time and paying the appropriate amount. Not just because I'm afraid of the IRS, but because I feel it's the right thing to do (my civic duty, as it were). But to imagine that all of the schmucks out there are the reason we have such high taxes, that's just a fantasy.

First generation 12" PowerBooks ran a lot hotter than they do now, and warped (some still do, but not as often).

First generation 15" Aluminum PowerBooks had white markes (splotches) on the screen.

I think the early Powerbook Ti's suffered from the keyboard pressing into the screen way too hard, leaving indentations.

First, I think the remake of Dune and the following books was damn good.

As for the Hecules / Xena: WP -> Riverworld reference, I can sort of see that. Kevin Smith (the one that played Aries on Hercules and Xena, not the cool one) was playing a warlord in much the same way he acted on both Olympian shows. The "bad guys" also sort of looked like a batallion from Hercules or Xena: WP.

But in my opinion, that's where it ended. Like I said, I've never read the books, but it appeared to be pretty good. It was more of a group dynamic than Herc Xena, where those 2 shows focuses on 2-and-only-2 characters 98% of the time. While the astronaut was the main focus, you can easily see how the rest of the eps focus mroe on the larger group that got away on the boat (though probably more on like 7 of them: alien, Mark Twain, little girl, British girl, etc).

I mean, in my mind, that's exactly how I'd imagine the scenario given to us. People "wake up" to this lush, green world. Obviously, there's no known tech or infrastructure in place, so they'd need to go the whole "old-school" route; with bamboo, forges, etc. Heck, for a a good chunk of the population, that was probably the norm when they were alive anyway.

While I respect your opinion, and think Law & Order: Classic is the best of the 3, saying SVU is the worst is WAY off.

Criminal Intent is too "ordinary." There's not much to distinguish CI and any other cop show. Plus, the main character guy just pisses me off. He acts WAY too snobby and superior. Sure, you out-smarted the bad guys, but you're still acting like a complete jack-off. There's a line between "Yay, you foiled the idiot crook" and "Ok, please stop putting the crook's hair on fire, he just stole a bunch of priceless cars." The main character crosses that line every time, and keeps on going. And unlike Lenny's funny comments or tough-love attitude, this guy just acts like an ass.

SVU may put some people off because of the subject matter (pedofiles, rape, etc), but it's quite interesting. It delves into the characters lives every now and then, but only to show how their job and what they experience bleeds into their home lives. Hell, I can't see how anyone can be an SVU detective for too long without going insane, especially if you have a family.

While to each their own, I know a lot of people that feel SVU is actually quality material.

As technically inferior MySQL is to Postgres, MySQL has a few major things going for it that ensure it's niche.

    1. Easy to install on Windows. The average coder at a Windows-only farm can easily run the executable and have the latest version running on their developer box. Not all companies allow you to have multiple boxes, and many force you (via draconion security measures) to only run windows with certain software installed. Postgres NEEDS a user-friendly Win32 installer, perhaps with a similar info-item like MySQL has. This is a MUST for companies to start to take notice. Then, a PHB can even play with it and like it.

    2. Marketing. While open-source, MySQL has a nice marketing engine behind it. A beautiful webpage, online and PRINT adds, and magazine and newspaper articles CONSTANTLY writing about the "little database that could" every few week / months. Postgres needs to start getting the word out, and hype it a little. Just because a product is superior, doesn't mean it will thrive. There are tons of examples out there: Beta vs VHS, Windows vs OS X, etc. For a database to be used, it must be allowed and "signed off" by a manager of some sort. Most will take reputation + support + "ooh, nice webpage" over a product that might be better, but they know nothing about it.

    3. More management tools. MySQL has a couple out there that look and run great; very professional looking. This earns respect from PHB's, as they are easily misled by such niceties.

Don't get me wrong. MySQL is nice, but doesn't have what I need most (Views, triggers, etc). Postgres may not be perfect, but I think it is superior. We just need to get the word out to those "not in the know".
