  1. Don't I wish... on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

    >They manage a project, but not the people

You know, I wish I had it this good. The management where I work seems incapable of leading, they refuse to follow, and they just won't get out of the way.

They won't do the work (specifications, schedules) actually needed for project management, and they get offended if anyone else does it. You'd think they'd want the project to succeed, but they're too busy trying to make themselves not look superfluous to actually do anything.

It's tough, but these days we're all beggars and have to take what we can get.

  2. Re:Thanks for spoiling the surprise, damn yanks! : on Trouble at Stargate SG-1 · · Score: 1

Well, I'm a Yank, and they spoiled the (disappointing) surprise for me too. Since I don't have Showtime (I pay enough for cable, thanks), I have to get my SG-1 fix via late night showings on our local Fox affiliate. Thank god for TiVo, they can't hide it from me, no matter how late they show it at night and how many times they change the schedule.

Anyway -- I have to cast my vote for SG-1 being the best Science Fiction show. It's got great characters and they interact wonderfully. Pity Shanks is leaving over an attempt to make SG-1 more X-Files-y as X-Files is going down the tubes quality-wise.

    Alas.

  4. Re:No, we're not ! on Chess Players 'Are Paranoid Thrillseekers' · · Score: 1

On the contrary, Chess players know that there's always someone trying to kill them, while Go players engage in an epic battle for more territory where neither side needs die. (But often does.)

  5. Chess: tactics, Go/Wei Qi/Baduk: strategy on Making Strategy Games with...Strategy? · · Score: 1

A number of people have posted about Chess, so it's worth pointing out a much older, much more complex strategy game (which possibly has a broader player base worldwide) -- Go, which is the Japanese name, it's known as Wei Qi in Chinese and Baduk in Korean.

One of the great things about Go is that the strategy and tactics are actually two separate things -- there's even an approximation of supply lines (groups are captured when they are completely surrounded without internal resources.)

Further, while they've made a computer that can beat the best Chess player in the world, no one's been able to come close to professional level in Go programs. (The best one isn't much stronger than I am.)

    >Well it depends on your definition of "decent
    >paying job". I think you're confusing "decent
    >paying" and "high paying".

I think you're confusing "job" with "". Sure the pay can be decent, but with millions of out of work web developers (most with experience), it's hard to imagine these kids will get a job in a deeply super-saturated market. I sure can't, and I'm being forced to consider McDonald's just so I don't lose my house.

    Suddenly I feel like precipitate.
