I've been using Macs for about fifteen years, and multi-button mice on Macs for oh, seven years? I've definitely gotten to prefer them.
Anyone have any numbers on how many Mac users have full-featured mice, and how many stick with the sometimes awful defaults?
Select to copy drives me up the wall, especially since A) I have a to select stuff as I'm reading it, which is my own fault, and B) I often use applications like PuTTY where the text can actually scroll while you're clicking on it to get focus, thus selecting something against my will and blowing away whatever I had in the clipboard.
As someone that once lost track of his niece at a crowded park for a minute or two (blink and they're gone) after spending a lot of effort to keep up when a lot of parents didn't, I can tell you that the added piece of mind is probably worth it even if you're a good parent. (Probably especially if you're a good parent.)
Actually, I'm not easily amazed. Nor is the difference lost on me -- that was the whole point of my post. Pornographic spam sent en masse to adults and children who neither asked for nor approved its receipt is far worse than the possibility of children running across porn at a library.
I admit that "amazed" was a little inappropriate, "outraged" is a bit more apt.
What amazes me is that some of the same people clamoring for internet access in libraries to be shut down because kids could access spam are fighting against legislation to prevent spam from being sent directly to the kids.
Sadly, the first thing that went through my mind when I saw the headline was "Dragonball Z?" thinking of the fusion martial arts technique -- then I see the machine they were using was called the "Z-machine" and I start wondering if there are some anime geeks at Sandia.
Why? Isn't publicity just the sort of thing they're after? If they didn't want people to know someone had hacked these websites, why would they bother?
I'm actually quite happy with my speeds and my four static IP address I'm getting from Speakeasy/Covad. (Although I'd be happier paying less, it did let me avoid paying almost the same in ISP hosting charges.) Qwest/US West always refused to allow me access even though there's a major phone company building ACROSS THE STREET (which I know doesn't mean there's a CO or whatever).
So if this goes through I'll lose all my network access unless Qwest is finally willing to replace the service with similar services at a similar (I'll bet it won't be lower) price.
Actually, I know that a character on some soap opera was named after my sister, Jill. In the mid-70s, my mother met someone who wrote for a soap in the New York area at a party, my mother mentioned her new daughter, and they liked the name so much they used it for the character.
So that effect swings both ways. Sadly, my parents won't tell me who I'm named after. They claim no one, but I always have the sneaking suspicion -- they must have gottent he name from somewhere, and baby name books seem so unappetizing as an eponym.
As I sat their peeing, I saw no less then *FIVE* people (Out of seven people in the restroom) who could not figure out how to work the sink. ONLY TWO PEOPLE COULD FIGURE IT OUT, even though it was written in plain english above the sink.
Why were you peeing for them? Or were you sitting in their pee? And were you sitting on the urinal? Otherwise, how could you watch them? All the Oregon restrooms I've seen have doors.
Besides, those people who couldn't figure it out were probably from California.
In my experience (11 year old Sony VCR, 8 year old Sony TV) most of Sony's electronics are good... except the (cordless) phones. Those doe on me very quickly and I've stopped buying Sony phones and switched to Panasonic. So far, so good.
It's not like VeriSign is the only one doing this -- I get "renewal notices" from a bunch of different registrars. Verisign I almost forgive because at least some of my domains are registered with them.
When Men in Black could get by with just a single letter name:
When I went to walk out the door, a U.S. Customs agent met me. "Mr. Tresco, My name is XXXXX, I am with the U.S. Customs Department. Would you mind coming with me?"
"Agent XXXXX, meet agents XXX, XX, XXXXXXXX, X and Sever."
I've been longing for TiVo for the radio almost immediately after I got my TiVo -- I'm now so used to rewinding that I forget I can't do it on radio.
But I wouldn't want to record music off the radio, I'd be much more interested in doing instant rewind (or pause) on live radio.
Even more important is TiVo's knowledge of schedules and season passes -- if I could get a season pass for "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me", or "This American Life", and play them back at my leisure, I would be a happy media junkie indeed.
As I understand Shogi, it's very similar to Chess. I've been playing Go for about 14 years now -- it's much deeper and complex than Chess, even if you only look at it numerically. With a 19x19 board and games that have been over 400 moves long, the brute force approach used by Deep Blue simply wouldn't work for Go.
As far as style of play, the complexity of the game makes for a much more interesting and organic game. Victory is based on territory, not so you could lose your biggest group or your not capture a single stone and still win the game.
Strategy plays a bigger role, as there is more of a battlefield to be strategic -- sacrifices are very common and natural, and even life and death is more complex -- usually you'll know when a Chess pieces is dead, it gets removed from the board. But a group in Go will often be left in a half-alive state, only to be rescue or killed later as part of a bigger threat.

Yeah, I didn't even read the article -- I was just hanging out somewhere with/. updates, minding my own business, when the title popped up and I knew immediately. I wasn't even using Tivo and I still got screwed.
Oh, come. Just think different. ...ly.

When I saw this headline, I thought, hey don't I already have that? Turns out I did. I think I did the same thing and watched only that bit.

Am I the only one that disappointed that this wasn't an image of an actual reflecting mirror?
I read this too, and did a quick calculation, and yes, my spam is up about 20% this quarter too.
So it's not just Slashdot editors.

Well, you sat you "sat their" [sic] peeing. Which is why I asked if you were, in fact, sitting on the urinal.

This is precisely why he's in such bad shape in Episodes V & VI -- it's all carefully thought out, I'm telling you!
So, buying the content and trying to use it legally causes huge cost and hassle, but downloading the content free of charge is safe?
Are we absolutely sure the people that came up with this CD protection scheme aren't WAREZ pirates in disguise?
Hmm...

So it wasn't a total loss.
I can't find where to change my spoiler threshold setting in the preferences!
