UK statistics generally include "use rude words or making offensive statements" under the heading of abuse, and thus calling a child "ignorant" is lumped in the same category as raping them. While this strategy makes the problem seem worse to some, it makes the statistics completely worthless.
I think we should ban pencils and paper, because people might draw their own porn.
I am an Internet user, and Flash does not work on my Sony Ericsson P1i phone, my Nokia E61i, my FreeBSD desktop, and only sometimes works on my Ubuntu desktop. However, all of these recieve frequent solicitations to download a "compatible version".
Either create a compatible version, or stop asking me to download one.
Yes I know Flash works on Windows XP. And maybe 99% of Internet users use WindowsXP. That is a poor excuse for not working on FreeBSD on UltraSparc hardware. Either you go after the "long tail". or you agravate the nerds. We, the nerds, are currently agravated.
,IWill businesses realize the charge less = more overall profit due to volume? Hell no. Not in anyone's lifetime. It's well established that companies like EA are far too greedy to realize they could be sensible and make more money.
The same day they stop playing the games themselves, and learn to use Excel.
Unfortunately Excel users dont write great games. Last game I actually paid money for was Captain Keen III = The only others I have played for came free with my phone. But I will gladly pay $20 for a world-class, truely exciting game, with Lara Croft in it, that runs in Excel!
and to absolve copyright companies from any responsibility if they engage in false accusations.
I cant see that being possible to enact in Europe.
Also, in Europe, the loser pays the court fees. That will not change for one particular treaty. It would require a change in the European Law of Human Rights. (On a par with chanigng the US constitution for the publicity it would get).
In the UK, for the state to bring a prosecution, it has to be virtually certain of a conviction before starting (to avoid tax payer's money being sqandered on litigation when there are better things to squander it on). A mere suggestion that the evidence might fall to pieces if challenged by experts will normally crush a criminal charge.
Only if the mass media convince their readers/viewers to believe that CD pirates are worse than Somalian pirates will this to work. Since most of them seem more willing to buy pirate DVDs for $3 in the Asda (Walmart) car-park than buy a newspaper, I would not hold my breath.
Return to PDP11's. The x++; operation is impemented in hardware in a PDP11, and as I hope you all know, C is the assembly language of the PDP11,
which was designed as a "hardware Fortran machine", Even "for (i = 0; i
Do the voting machines use a really sad processor? How sad can processors get in the 21st century?
I know compilers can get pretty bad, but this bad?
Isn't the BBC almost entirely funded by taxing everyone in the UK with a TV? How is this any different?
Because a lot of us do not use the intertubes for file sharing. It has other uses. This is like charging car drivers
an extra tax because they _could_ drive to HipHop dance venues, and because you have a gun, and they don't.
How's that for a car analogy - yeah, gimme the Karma!!!!
I remember the days pre-Windows when UNIX vendors were cursed and sworn at because they didn't patch the latest bugs quickly.
Sure,
but not because the bugs were a security problem - the problem was core dumps and hanging device drivers. If you remember Unix worms and viruses, you spent too much of the 60's smoking dope. In any case, you got the source code bug fixes by e-mail everywhere I worked, and it was up to you to recompile. (Which typically took 3 days).
IMHO WGA gets it wrong 100% of the time, so naturally I am not tempted to enable it. All the machines I know to have pirate copies of windows flag as OK, while those wiht known legit copies are rejected. It is a typical piece of MS quality software.
However, the lesson from the original story is that Windows is unfit for corporate use, and probably for home use as well.
Political? Its aboutbback-handers and pocket lining. A Costco card is free with "biometric" picture on, but a govt card costs £70 so that the private contractors can be paid.
Can you say "thieving bastards?" I thought you could!
What the heck do you use PCI cards for these days anyway?
To connect my SCSI gear - eg legacy tape drives to restore from (not much point in those backups if you cant get to the data).
There are other custom cards (eg T1/E1 interface) that cost a fortune, and still work fine. Not to mention engineering specials.
Some of us were not born yesterday, and have a huge legacy of "stuff". (I have dumped my reel-to-reel tapes and 8" floppies,
(gave them to the museum) and all my pre-PCI interface cards(sent them to Africa, along with the 486's))
Having your country decide what's rational or not is the totalitarian way. I guess an insane country would be a country that is irrational to boot, but that wouldn't make it better.
I have actually lived in countries where the head of state appeared to be criminally insane, and IMHO, at least it is more fun than our present regime. A government that is incapable of doing anything may not be much good, but they are incapable of doing much wrong either. The present UK government has the power to make enormous numbers of peoples' lives misery, and does not have the skill to do anything useful.
The police are already a bigger threat than the terrorists - you are very unlikely to be killed by a terrorist, but you are virtually certain to be charged with some petty offence like parking or speeding, or "driving in the rich people's area" (congestion charge) and fined a disproportionate amount, administered in such a way that it is not practical to defend yourself.
In third world countries, where you routinely have to pay the police, at least the amount they demand is usually quite small.
My lst five car accidents have happend while my car was stationary The most recent one, the other car was being push-started and the moron lady drive drove into the side of my parked 4x4!
No amount of collision sensing radar will protect you from side impacts while stationary. However, there might be something to be said for exocet missiles!

Totally consistent wiht their other policies then. Not surprised you imagined it.

I am from Windows, and I dream of releasing a virus-killing mosquito!
Nope - the money went strait to the pockets of the well-connected. Just like very other Labour sponsored big budget project.
www.bribe-a-lord.co.uk
I have been sending fake spam for years. No one can tell the difference.
Yeah, a ú20 UK tax for downloading porn! That should buy a few votes!
Never mind the children, think of the Lords ...
The present UK government is insane, so that wont stop them.
Either of which would have run the banks better than the present regime.

If the RIAA pay the Lords, then the people must pay the RIAA - its obvious innit?
Unless you live near 3 Mile Island!
Until last week, the two concepts were one. Now "Ebony" is the official American current affairs journal.

People use MS stuff on servers? Are they guilty but insane?
Please support my appeal for a grant to create money-seeking misiles!
However, the lesson from the original story is that Windows is unfit for corporate use, and probably for home use as well.
Written from Opera on FreeBSD.
