Your system is down for a minimum of several days, and possibly weeks as all the apps have to be reinstalled/upgraded/reconfigured. It may not work at all.
If the system is WORKING then only a fool would bugger about with it. I have no intention of upgrading any of my WIn2K servers until such time as they are down for other reasons. And even then, only if I am sure that all the third party apps are guaranteed to work - most of our mission critical stuff is ONLY certified for WIn2k server edition. Mission-critical means if its down, we stop earning money. So down is not very good news.
In this part of the world, cameras with telephoto lenses are used to send you parking tickets by mail if you slow below 2MPH! (If you go faster, you get a speeding ticket).
The cameras are supposed to deter crime, but unfortunately, according to mayor Ken Livingstone, owning or using a car is a crime. (Owing or using and SUV is a capital offence.)
The law is Not there to help criminals protect the procedes of their crimes.
Personally, I am a European think MS should be stripped of its Intellectual Property Rights completely. Not because of the fact that I am forced to waste an enormous amount of my life dealing with Windows related security problems - although I think that European law is supposed to protect us from companies selling this kind of sh*te, but because of the criminal acts they have used to get themselves into the world domination they have now.
MS is a far bigger threat to the average world citizen than Al Quaida and Bin Laden - and where are the SWAT teams when you need them? Oh, Yeah, the US Government sold its soul to the devil!
The EU share of zombies is increasing, but it isn't the major source (yet).
Well, if it is, dont blame me - I posed an "Ask slashdot" question asking how to stop my Win PC being a Zombie, and it was not run. I have not seen any other stories on this topic. I know of at least three machines that are using 100% of available ADSL bandwidth, even when the user has no browser open. However, I have no clue what to do. AdAware and SpyBot s&d are unable to clear the machines. They all have the latest patches.
I have switched to FreeBSD, my mother now uses a mac, and my son has bought an iBook.
But sometimes I have to power up a winbox, and then down goes the ADSL throughput.
what makes you think an in-order processor with 8 vectorprocessors is going to help?
What makes me think it will work this time is that it has:
Sony - who guarantee volume production and applications to sell the volume
IBM - who bring the longest history of using this type of architecture to solve real world business problems - oh, yes - IBM DO KNOW why this is the architecture to use for commercial applications
Apple - who bring a user interface that is popular with power users and computer illiterate alike
Linux - which will bring the commitment of the nerds - who are the people whose advice is saught on this type of issue.
And it does not have Windows, Viruses, Spyware, BSODs and compatibility with 30 year old architecture.
This is NOT Betamax vs VHS - this is DVDs vs reel to reel tape. I have worked with this type of architecture, and I DO know what it can do, and the i86 can't compete any more than a 50's valve radio competes with an MP3 player.
If Sony get more than 3 games working when the PS3 is released, every one on the planet under 25 will know.
If IBM don't have at least three killer commercial Apps within a year, I'll eat Bart Simpson's mexican hat live on MTV to the sound of Bashment.
I used to be a mamber of OTN, and yes, I know you can find the answers to some Oracle technical questions on the Internet, but You get no fixes and in my experience, you NEED fixes with Oracle. And also in my experience, You get fixes with Postgresql much easier.
Nothing beats IBM's db2 service, either for price or quality. If price is no object, db2 has no competitors, but in my books Postgresql beats Oracle regardless of cost. And Oracle aint cheap (Hell, even at $5 for a pirate copy, vs free download, there's still no competition - I would not use Oracle to play with at home).
(I do have the developers db2 edition for $100 or whatever, but you need to pay the real price to deploy commercially, and the real price IS real money).
Don't even bother about this. The i86 architecture is about to be history.
Any minute now, Cell Architecture machines will be in full flow, and Von Neuman architecture will be a dead duck except for embedded systems that use the 8051, MIPS, Sparc or Z280 architecture anyway.
And cell architecture will presumably run derivatives of Linux, FreeBSD and OSX, but not WinXP.
I have seen the future, and It is Apple shaped - this will be FAR bigger than the 8->16->23->64 bit transitions. This will be like punched cards to VDUs all oer again.
It may need a whole new OS/Compiler infrastructure, but OpenSource can deliver that pretty quickly. Once you have it, the performance gains for many tasks are 1,000 fold. Esppecially for the tasks that i86 already finds hard!
Except for Intel users, who get the value 154789 instead.
Seriously, When your processor is fried/upgraded, you lose access to all your software? and this is a feature intended to sell processors?
First software like a car with the hood welded down. Now we have a car that won't run after the 40,000 mile service. I bought an Austin Montego I know this stinks
I had an Oracle based project running fine at one of my former employers. It was based on OS/2. Then Oracle dumped OS/2 with scarsely any warning. The project was severely screwed - ever tried using Oracle without support? It is NOT like using Open Source, where you can search the Internet for solutions.
Another employer, another year - I built a "Work in Progress" system using Oracle Power Objects. - Oracle scraps OPO because of major Y2K defects - project dies.
Now I use PHP and Postgresql - No chance of this happening to me again.
I have used other proprietry software since - and guess what - the so called "support" consists of some fool in Bangalore pretending he has an English name, and being unable to understand the problem I am reporting, consuming more of my time than it would take to fix the software myself. (Ten hours of my time, two weeks to NOT fix a misaligned columns in a report listing is what you get from paid support!)
Use proprietry software - get shafted! Yeah, that will make us buy it!
You can be sure a fair percentage of the civil servants allowed access to the database will have the login "asmith" and the password "Beckham"
And the jails will be overflowing with absent minded grannies who left produced their phone card or NHS card instead, or left their ID card on the bus.
As outrageous scams go, at £90 a head for every man, woman and child in the country, (approx 65 million people) this has to be one of the biggest scams in human history.
It is in the same league as Mandleson's "Give me £750 million, and I will think of some way to spend it by the end of the millenium" (squandered on the dome of disaster).
"I have been re-elected - I need to fill my pockets" Mugabe must be having a field day!
This is exactly the architecture I specified for a hardware database engine I designed 20 years ago.
Naturally the implementation details are considerably different.
You have to think about the problems from a totally different perspective to get the best from this architecture, and re-compiling existing C programs is not the way to do it. You need languages like Algol68 or Occam to get benefits. Ie you need a language that allows you to specify what cannot be done in parallel, and assumes that the rest can - but SQL is also good! There is any amount of existing knowledge on how to use parallelism for database work, it is inherent parallel anyway - you perform database operations on sets!
if I drive with a light off I get a ticket, independent of me noticing it or not. So why does anyone treat an irresposnible person (knowingly or not originating/relaying spam) differently from the spam originator.
But if it's because the car's brakes are unable to hold it if there is a very slight slope, I think you would ahve a good case against the motor manufacturer, and if all their cars were like that, you could expect a big federal case. I don't see Dell or MS in court.
Putting a not road worthy vehicle on an Interstate is a punishable crime. So is selling unroadworthy vehicles, and misrepresenting safety aspects of vehicles. If you were sold a car with locks that didn't lock, I think you would have federal support is sueing the auto manufacturer. Once again, MS is not in court. And where they are, they bribe their way out.
I agree that thre are corrupt government officials everywhere. I never asserted otherwise.
However, I maintain my assertion that the US government is one of very few that believe that the rights of corporations who make huge campaign corporations LEGITIMATELY exceed the rights of voters.
How is taking action against large corporations who conspire to commit fraud and deception, or profit from fraud and deception, going to affect the innocent?
My proposal is toseverely punish BANKS for their involvement in illegal activity. There is no way that the BANKS are (a) innocent or (b) citizens.
I concede that you might not agree with my view that most of the major BANKS (everywhere) are unpardonable scum, and involved in conspiracy to defraud, but I can only assume that is due to lack of experience in dealing with banks.
There is NO POSSIBLE DOUBT that all the money recieved for sales of pruducts promoted by spam/spyware go through american owned banks If you doubt me, just try to find any other way to get payment and then market fake "vihagra". It can't be done!
For example, if , under the proposed law,, action can be taken against the (American owned) banks which process the money for all spamware sales, then it would stop.
If the Australian government says to American Express: "If, after being informed that one of your clients is using your service to process payments for items promoted by spyware, you continue to make payments to that client, then the Austrailian branch of your company will be fined $10,ooo for each transaction" it would stop.
If the American government threatened to withdraw banking licences from banks that provided services to those who use spyware/spam to promote their goods and services, there would be no spam. They could do this using existing anti-corruption/money laundering legislation. But they don't.
Unfortunately, the US government has sold its soul to the devil.
Got a spare tin-foil hat?

So when they charge $140, its obvious they are using their monopoly position to charge $139 more than the product is actually worth.
Who is stealing from whom here?
Because they don't want people to buy their products!
Now try a harder question.
When they do publish datasheets, why do they omit important parameters, and get the dimensions wrong?
I, and many others, would prefer not to have my bonnet welded shut when I break down out of town!

Perhaps because it is a Unix work-alike, and this was the original design goal of Unix?
Now that is real sex education!

Well perhaps America should declare independence then?

1) Its insanely expensive, thus allowing everyone concerned in the decision making to line their pockets
2) It relies on an online database, thus allowing hackers.ru to set up a profitable business supplying fake ones.
Its true it wont supply any security, or prevent any fraud, but no intelligent bystander really expected it would anyway.

Can you say 'Cayonero'? I knew you could!
Considering I get a good 50 spams a day promoting canadian pharmacies, it can't be all bad.
No. the penalties for fraud do not include cruel and unusual torture.
However, I maintain my assertion that the US government is one of very few that believe that the rights of corporations who make huge campaign corporations LEGITIMATELY exceed the rights of voters.
