NO, actually there isn't.
If you need to run Linux stuff on *BSD, you just
install it and run it.
All the *BSD's have the ability to run Linux stuff through a hack to the loader (Obviously, its not officially called a "hack"). It works fine. There is no obvious performance penalty, and the stuff runs (although, I have to admit, it took a bit of work for me to get Star Office to work on one of the BSDs). NestCrap works as well as it does under Linux:-(
AFAIK, the ports/packages systems include DB2, Oracle, Star Office/Wordperfect, etc, and they are as easy to install as native BSD stuff in principle.
But IBM, if you are listening, Id still rather PAY for native BSD DB2 than use the free hack. And Larry Ellison, if you are listening: Up Yours
I think a campaign along the lines of - "The other party suport the idea paying B Gates for stuff that is available for free. I, and my party, support the idea of saving the tax payer BIG BUX!"
Must be worth a couple of votes.
Find out HOW MANY BUCKS are paid to M$ each year, and campaign on the absis that you could save all of it. Well its plausible, and no one expects a politician to be totally honest. Most of the voters (and probably all of your fellow candidates) will expect you to put half the savings in your own back pocket.
Cos it costs heaps of money, and there's not much to
be gained from it.
At work I have sole use of ISDN, and AFAICT its generally no faster than my USR external analogue modem at home in practice. (Which will p*** on a Winmodem any day). The limitation is not the last mile, but somewhere upstream in most cases. If it was, it would still be cheaper to get two analog modems and use bundling (I use NetBSD to connect, so this is easy).
Sure I'd like to have always on, static IP, and more speed, but not so much I'd pay and arm and a leg for it. I am also not interested in signing contracts with companies that change the terms and conditions, if necessary by going bust/selling out/rebranding, such that you pay more than you planned and get less. ISPs and all that go with them have a reputation with users for total lack of morals/financial acumen/competence.
Would you sign a maintenance agreement with the same used car dealer that sold you a lemon last time?
Not only they don't want us, they don't want to provide broadband one little bit.
Broadband means people can use internet phones, and internet phone means never having to pay long distance again
Basically, they are all f***ed if they deliver broadband that works, and they know it.
I predict No telco will ever deliver a cheap, broadband service that works properly It would be commercial suicide.
I also cant see video over a phone wire working either. After all, satellite just has to be 1,000,000 times cheaper if everyone is watching the same thing, and if they are watching TV, they are obviously totally indiscriminate.
Most people have the box on as bg noise, and don't care what the program is. They ain't going to pay big bucks for that.
PAYV sports has already started to crash. People would rather kick the ball themselves than pay $15 to watch someone else kick it ON THEIR TV they already paid for.
If I want BSD, I use BSD - its not like it isn't cheaper than Linux and well as freeer (and more stable, faster, in fact, better. And you dont actually have to speek to Theo De Raatt to use it.
If I wanted an Apple compatible BSD, then I'd use Mac OSX!
It cant be much good - 50% of spam I get comes from hotmail accounts.
I forward them all to abuse@hotmail.com, and a robot replies. 6 months later, I get back a note saying they'll do something about it, maybe sometime soon. Another 8 months, and the spammer's account is closed. If only snails were as slow as hotmail's anti spam procedures.
The PEOPLE did not elect these govenrments - they took power by armed force. They were not asked, and did not give permission, for their govenrments to take out the loans in the first palce. In more than one case (Nigeria, Zanmbia)the people ahve been asked, said NO, but the government borrowed anyway!
These governments are more like bank-robbers holding the population hostage. It would be better for the democratic countries t let these countries go bust, and then use the bankruptsy as an excuse to restore democracy. Howver, its not that easy to have democracy where there is no media, no litteracy, and no tradition of democracy. (Eg Russia is better than average)
A lot of people think its not acceptable. There is a problem with canelling debt though - if people get the idea that their debts will be cancelled, then they are not very likely to lend again. That is why a once-off, for the millenium was more acceptable.
My view is that, if a loan is made to a non-democratic government, then it should not be enforcable against a people who did not elect the governnment. That way, non-democratic governments would not be able to take out huge loans in the name of their people, put the lot in a Swiss bank account, and then disappear, leaving their poor pople to pay their debts.
The present system is like punishing the victim when the school bully takes his pocket-money.
The Swiss might not like it much, but I'd sure prefer not to have to pay huge bank charges to make up the money my bank loaned to people who were not worth a fig to anyone.
Or should that be Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated
AFAIK, you can still buy legit, supported IBM-DOS or PC-DOS or whatever IBM call it. M$-DOS may be dead, but, M$ is committed to not supporting its products anyway. I shan't be buying it, as I own more DOS licences than PCs.
I shall continue to keep a copy installed in a partition of almost all my PCs. Its really handy for sorting out the odd hardware support problem. If I ever do run out, I bet that IBM will be happy to sell me a new copy for at least the next five years and support it too.
The UK auction went wrong either cos the bidders had never been to auctions before, or because they were incapable of running a business.
In order for the customers (phone users) to pay for the licences, they would have had to spend their entire incomes, and then some, on phone bills for several years. Part of your business plan has to be to figure out whether the customers CAN pay.
As part of my sales training, I was told about an allegedly famous American bank robber, called Willie Sutton. Apparently, when he was arrested, the judge asked "Willie, your an intelligent man, why do you rob banks?" To which he replied "Hell, man, thats where the money is!... no point in robbing candy stores."
Unfortunately the people who run BT did not have the extensive sales training that I got!
Or they did not know how many millions in a billion.
Either way, they should not have been in charge of anthing bigger than a mobile phone.
WTF would anyone want flash? If a site has Flash, You KNOW its a pile of piss without even waiting the 6 1/2 hours it will take to download, let alone the 10 extra secs it will take to crash.
If I wanted my brain to be asaulted with bright flashing images, I'd take a dose of LSD.
Why would anyone who is ignorant of PCs want to get online in the first place? The only thing that comes to mind is to chase the fad, but people that buy purely for those reasons, rarely go for cheap crippleware. Seems to me you'd have better luck selling a $300, bare bones word processing system.
Years ago, several people did (IBM, Wang, DEC). The customer figured he was better off buying a PC - ie the same kit, but with more flexibility, upgradeability, apps, for the same money.
Versatility means more users, and more volume, More volume means lower prices. A PC without the functionality of a PC has a smaller market, and hence a higher price, and hence a smaller market still. Its a vicious circle (And the precence of M$ is the ultimate in vicious:-)

Watch as reality bites.
Cos his dick is too small!
I presume that SUV does not mean "Second User Vehicle" in America - why are you people so illiterate?
1) Install Free Solaris on PC
2) wish for better hardware for same nice software
3) Go and buy a Sun
Or is there another marketing strategy that stands a chance of increasing Sun's share of the hardware market by more than 2% pa?
Yes I have got a Sun on my desk!

Perhaps we could find a good use for any cruise missiles left over from Afganistan.
Torture is my best guess. Is that a penal farm?
Before you can write Perl, you must first learn it. You don't need to learn BASIC - its intuitive.
Its clearly not the time to emigrate to Australia, where the Internet has its content removed so as to make it safe for kids.
Pretty soon the only place with free speach will be Afganistan :-)
Or it had better be 100 times cheaper than AOL.
You have missed the point

Looks like it IS your problem - for choosing RR as your ISP. Isn't there a decent company where you live?
Windows is obviously unsuited to use on a machine connected to the Internet due to risk of viruses, hacking, etc.
Gun rights
Is that the American "right to arm bears"?. We have no rights to ahve guns here. Posession of a firearm is punishable by 7 years jail.
However, It seems we have a problem with people being killed by falling cookies.
It all depends what you mean by dead

Come on, I was offered a cracked copy at a computer fair last weekend!
