Athlon system for $1.5k that would still outmuscle both Mac systems
Sometimes I wonder which group of people are worse: the GPL zealots or the PC/AMD zealots.
Next you'll be claiming that a Beowulf cluster of Athlons could easily replace the big SGI or Alpha iron in scientific computing...
All because you still somehow think that AMD is a "good" corporation and Intel is the Evil Empire.
Face it. There has been hardware out there for decades that could still beat your beloved PC to pulp both in performance, scalability and reliability even when weighed against the total cost of ownership.
Support software industry and refuse draconian licenses like GPL that take away all incentive to sell software! No bucks, no software industry, no jobs. Is that what you want?
It kept opening pop-up screens, requires useless crap like shockwave flash and arrogantly tells me that it has been optimized for certain browsers (not for Konqueror, obviously). All signs of a bad site.
I'm not yet another paki or a sad and poor refugee. I'm an anglophile and a highly educated (PhD) caucasian with an excellent grasp of the English language and the culture.
Obviously I'll swear allegiance to the Queen and I would be more than happy to serve your Foreign Office and the intelligence community on the matters concerning my (former) nation if given a chance.
So: do physics. It's fun, suitably geeky, and it opens lots of doors for the future.
I agree.
After a while (see my post above) I settled on a university career in Physics. Most of my Physics major friends, however, are now working in R&D groups in electrical engineering and signal processing as well as in theoretical mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics and one in financing. If you have any social skills and a university degree in Physics it should be easy to get a job.
professorship is a difficult proposition
You really don't need a professorship to do meaningful research and apply for funding. Really. Sure it helps, but you get so much redtape and management bullshit with it that it's really not worth it.
I began majoring in CS but after a class in functional programming and another in algorithms ("estimate the O-function for this recursive algorithm") I had had enough.
First I switched over to Computational Physics and then, after getting fed up with the "our simulations are better than the reality" attitude, I went for experimental Solid State Physics. Got my PhD last year.
"Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration".
Now, besides making me seem like a total dork, the preceding quote definitely has an application to being a PhD student. There are many ways in which fear can negatively affect your graduation. Being able to quell these fears will make your work more productive, and might even be what it takes to get your research off the ground. Let's take a look at a few different phobias:
Fear of Failure: This is one that obviously affects a lot of people in many different aspects of their lives. This is a shame. You need not fear failure. In fact, if you go about writing articles with the right attitude, it will be impossible for you to fail. Strive only to exceed yourself, but ALWAYS strive to exceed yourself. Publishing should be all about improving and competing against yourself. If you are increasing your knowledge and getting more results while refining technique over time, you are a success. Do not worry whether you are the smartest guy in the lab, or whether you think you do not have the genetics to get as smart and famous as your favorite scientist. Do not get hung up on the fact that you do not use drugs so you can't get as relaxed as those who use drugs. Too many people use these cop-outs as excuses, and get a type of perverted satisfaction from proving themselves right and determining that they can't dramatically increase their brainpower and luck with women. Do not set this trap for yourself. Do your best every time. One taoist principle that applies here goes something like this: if you aren't hung up only on winning, you can't lose. In other words, only worry about what you can do, and if you stay accountable to yourself you will be on the fast-track to success.
Fear of Rejection: This is one of the least rational fears that a lifter indulges himself in. It makes no sense to me that a group of people who engage in activity that 99% of the populus considers 'weird' are so sensitive in some respects to a 'group mentality'. You see it everywhere: the smartest guys in your lab say you will not get super-smart unless you work all night every day of the week, some of the hard-core students claim that you can't succeed unless you've got the right genes, or some fat lifters in their week-old denim shirts say you are not a 'real' scientist 'cause you don't go raw. Why do you listen to these people? A 'real' man, and a 'real' scientist, thinks for himself. Absorb as much knowledge as you can. I literally have hundreds of books/journals/magazines relevant in some manner or another. Absorb all of this information, and try out anything that seems feasible. Over time, you will find out what works for your mind and learning ability. Once you do, make small periodic changes in order to stave off boredom and overuse problems, but stick to your basic framework.
You mean this party? Well, you got "head" as you said, didn't you you old pervert!
I just took a major shit
but my turd was way too big
...(something about poop)

How about some Fecal Limericks?
I had one in mind but forgot it after the second beer...
Michael got even mentioned on CNN!
What superior software? Like GCC? Who cares if Intel's compiler produces 47% faster code...
Support software industry and refuse draconian licenses like GPL that take away all incentive to sell software! No bucks, no software industry, no jobs. Is that what you want?
You're right. This new technology really makes a difference!
Passwords, private e-mails and other information that I do not wish anyone else to see?
At least that's what I did already with my 14.4 kbps modem in the 1990s.
Wohoo! Now the script kiddies can intercept your wireless communication even faster.
Who cares about speed if the security is non-existent?
You can use your time in much, much better ways.
Read Curt Gentry's book "J. Edgar Hoover - The Man and the Secrets", for instance. Hoover's FBI was the American Gestapo!
So? At least I would die knowing that I made the morally right choice back then.
Meeting violence with violence is barbaric and only breeds more death and destruction. You cannot kill terrorism with bombs.

Someone else: "I doesn't matter if I don't scan thru the code, someone else will".

How do I get it?
I agree.

My good old C128 had a Z80 chip in it.
Drinkin' vodka and getting drunk.
Goddamn what an idiot.
What the hell does he talk about?
You don't think it's weird to have shit while your co-worker is sitting in the next stall and can hear all the plops and smell your shit?
I could never do that.

Hans Zimmer, "The Battle" at full volume and Smirnoff quality vodka!
Look, even DoJ is doing it.
