If people would stop beeing greedy, self-serving, corrupt, bribe-taking ballot-stuffing country-hating FUCKS, you wouldn't have these problems.
Of course, that's just my idea. It could work. We'll never know.
Being technology and society (a limited portion of society) pundits, why do you feel it is that people nowadays in the younger age brackets care more about television, games, fashion, trendy music, cars, and "getting with guys / chicks" than they do about politics, foreign policy, and other people dying by the millions in countries they will never visit?
It would be simple and trite to say that it is because these things are too far away for them to care about, but quite simply anyone who has enough brain cells to get through high school math is smart enough to care about these things, yet they make a concious decision not to.
What do you think needs to be done to help get people out of their self-imposed, meaningless and utterly worthless little social shells?
PS: Yes, I was bullied in school.:)
Well, yes, extremists are the terrorists. But they are extremists only by definition, and it is a definition written by your government. Where they are from, they are not extremests, they're probably conservative Republicans, or something.
These extremists also don't attach Democratic countries because they can, they do it because something these Democratic countries have done have deeply angered these extremists. The US and Britain have hundreds of thousands of troops stationed in countries that never once asked for help. They block trade from countries in order to force their own ideals upon these smaller nations. All in all, these 'extremists' are simply trying to protect their freedom from the vicious foreigners who want to destroy their way of life.
They just don't have the publicists that Westerners can afford.
How the heck did that happen?
But on an on-topic vein, cyberspace is the only place that is even remotely truly free anymore. Governments, who exist to 'secure our freedom' seem to want to limit the freedoms that they don't directly control. Someone should bust them up for forming monopolies.
At what point does it work? I mean, I install the demo, double clock the link, the screen goes black (although my mouse is still visible in the bottom right corner) and.... after twenty minutes my computer reboots. Now, I'm no expert, but that seems like a really crappy game.
It isn't a matter of I'm lazy or self-concious. It's more of a matter of getting my gf pregnant, putting myself through college so I could get a job to support us, and averaging five minutes of spare time per day which I don't like to spend reading how lazy I am.
Sorry, I don't mean to be bitchy. It's been hard for me to write lately. I really am only able to write anything of quality when I'm alone somewhere, maybe with a Coke, some good loud music, and no distractions. I have a 2 year old who seems to have a glowing neon "Distraction" sign floating along behind him.
I know that my stories are different from what is out there, but the fact is the literary agents I talked to cited those reasons as why it was turned down. Publishers wont take work not solicited from agents, and agents wont read work that hasn't been recommended by someone they know. I sent a sample of my work to Larry Niven after we got to talking on a forum, but that was the last I heard of him.
Regardless, I start my new job next week, in a house that lets me have a little space of my own (it's a corner of the basement. I'm building a cubicle out of cardyboard boxes.) Then we'll see if I can get some of my stories finished.
Well, I read as much as I can, and I work hard to make my work original. See, much like a post a few above mine, only in the broadest terms are my ideas recycled, much in the same way that this book review is like Harry Potter. Yes, it's British. Yes, there's magic. Therefore, the connection is set.
With my story, yes, a ship is lost in time for a hundred or so years, and yes, the universe has changed. Thats the ONLY similarity, and yet I distinctly remember being told "Why did you have to rip off Andromeda?" even though mine is clearly dated years before Andromeda ever came out.
Also, very good quote, Coward Who Replied To My First Post. Very poetic. I thought of it first, though...
... everyone has at least one great story inside of them, but sadly most people lack the writing skills to get past the introduction. Personally, I think some wires got crossed, because stories I wrote years ago and didn't get published (too short, incomplete) have become bastardized as: Andromeda, The Forgotten, The One (with Jet Li), The Collector, and a bunch of other movies and TV shows. (Please bear in mind, my story is like Andromeda inly in the VERY BROADEST terms, but sadly, thats enough to keep me from ever publishing it.)
Anyone else ever have that problem? An idea you thought was yours, and a year later it ends up on the screen?
The funniest one for me was it turns out a story I wrote is VERY VERY, and I mean frighteningly similar to a book written in the 1950's... stupid time-travelling literature thieves.
He couldnt do what he wanted? How could he POSSIBLY not have the tools to add three seconds where Greedo gets a shot off, given what he had done for the rest of the movie?
Well, adding special effects for the sake of adding special effects seems to detract from the magic of a movie. Also, I've never had enough money to go out and buy said Special Edition, so thats another reason why I haven't seen it. Finally, how can King Lucas possibly rationalize not being able to show that part of the story until now when "technology gives him the control he needed"?
I'll stick with the original Star Wars... "Hidden Fortress" by Akira Kurosawa.
I read the thread because I love Star Wars. Because I love Star Wars, I haven't seen the Special Edition. Because I haven't seen the Special Edition, this comment made no sense to me. Because this comment made no sense to me, I posted for clarification. Because I posted for clarification, you feel the need to belittle me because I know less than you. Congratulations.
... you can do what I did when I quit so very recently. Bring in that $5 tape deck that everyone has hiding in their closets somewhere, put the classical Office Space song by Cannabis, the cover of the great Johnny Paycheck classic, and crank it up to MAXIMUM VOLUME.
Then, it's simply a matter of putting it somewhere concealed but hearable (for me, being the only guy over 6 feet in the office, it was on top of the kitchenette cabinettes, but somewhere in the return air plenum should work fine) and then dance out of the office, singing along.:) I could still hear the song after I made it to the parking lot.
I only had a few minutes before bed, and I had decided to post something goofy near the top of the story. This should not be taken as a commentary on the intellectual state of/. readers.
I am pretty much stunned that there is evidence of something on this scale, but the articles are fairly light on details, and I didn't really know what else to say. If you asked my opinion, I'd say it validates a lot of my own theories that the Universe is not a bunch of dense spots moving through an empty void, but rather an interconnected series of visible / energized matter pockets connected by invisible / de-energized 'dark' matter. I've been using that basic concept as the basis for interstellar travel in my short stories for years now (although, really, thats just sci-fi, I haven't the foggiest clue as to how it works.)
And as for the number of posts, this got 11 posts since I went to bed last night, and the North Korea thing got 1500 posts. Perhaps this is big news, but perhaps people are slightly more concerned with an angst-ridden country playing around with nuclear weapons.
At this moment, as well as three play-by-email games of Stars! right now. Trying to hook up a game of Alien Crossfire, too, but no such luck.

I gotta get myself some more Slashdot accounts so I can start modding my comments +5, too.

Jury-Draw Elections.
Feel free to leave comments, I'd love some feedback on this.
Har dee har har!
Political Review. Also known as talking out my ass, but it's always good to try out new ideas.

And as to looking to your government for protection from war and terrorism... THE GOVERNMENT IS THE CAUSE of the wars and terrorism.

I'm asking for help with the demo, and instead of an answer I get a negative moderation. Thats fair.

Rebuilding a fallen empire? That doesn't have the slightest thing to do with my story.

Just take a look at the previous Slashdot article located hnyah, nuclear power may not be the best choice anymore.
Just one humble opinion. It is currently being fleshed out.
