  1. Re:Can we lose the troll writeups? on Seven Mobile ATA Hard Drives Compared · · Score: 1

The poor suckers who buy an IBook, that's who. I still don't see why Apple has such a tendency to skip on relatively cheap upgrades such as extra RAM and a faster HD, even on mid-range models.

  2. Home linux? on Apple Switching to Intel · · Score: 1

What does this mean for the linux desktop movement? Will it begin to slowly decline and be relegated to a workstation/server OS?

  5. Hey, guys on Top 50 DVDs · · Score: 1

They are ranking the actual DVDs in terms of packaging, image quality, extras, etc. - not the actual movies. So stop complaining about which movies are on the list - it stands to reason that more modern movies have better DVDs.

So, we go through another crisis when the helium runs out?

  7. Hmm... on Disney to Make Toy Story 3 Without Pixar · · Score: 2, Interesting

Can Pixar survive without Disney? Absolutely, their movies pretty much market themselves these days. Can Disney movies survive without Pixar? Only if they get out of their post-95 crap slump.

  9. What about the kids? on Does Redskins Loss Presage A Kerry Win? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Every time kids/teenagers have been polled en masse about the presidency, the president they chose won. Strangely enough, Bush came out on top by about 10% in ChannelOne's massive poll of teenagers. Does this mean Bush will win? No, it means superstitions are bullshit.

  10. Re:Poker on Geeks Playing Poker? · · Score: 1

People are drawn in to poker by the "thrill" when the money games are specifically not about that. After you play a couple hundred thousand hands, you get over the thrill and learn a grind that is reminiscent of MMORPGs but with a more lucrative outcome for the investment. While it may not be "thrilling", I almost guarantee that if you ask any good poker player whether he likes playing poker he will say yes. Many MMORPG players play simply out addiction, and often times don't so much enjoy it as they just want to accomplish a certain goal (only to start on another one).

Why is it "absurb"? Just because you can't have everything for free doesn't make it stupid. Bait and switch is a tried and true method.

Er, NASA is targetting a launch sometime in the summer of next year. Also, I daresay that the space shuttles are safer than the Soyuz-class rockets and SpaceShipOne - they have just been on the short end of the stick when it comes to luck (or the Russians have been lucky).

  14. Re:Don't be evil! on Will Google Launch A Browser? · · Score: 1

Expanding into new markets isn't neccessarily "evil", and is often just "good capitalism". The problem is that many companies screw up expansion, or use foul tactics against existing competitors in the new arena.

  16. The Problem with Jabber on How Google Could Overthrow AIM · · Score: 1

Is that it doesn't have wide support many features which geeks see as "useless", such as webcams, good voice chat, etc. The truth is that until Jabber has all the flashy features that the other networks have, it doesn't stand a chance vs AIM or MSN.

  17. Amazing on Foam Gluing Flaw Killed Columbia Astronauts · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's amazing how something like the method of gluing on insulation tiles can cause a shuttle to blow up, yet for all the serious damage done to Apollo 13 they still managed to get back alive.

  18. I can see it now on Emergency Alert System Insecure · · Score: 2, Funny

  19. Kazaa gold? on P2P vs. The Clones · · Score: 4, Interesting

If anything, this reminds me more of how Morpheus completely ripped off Gnucleus after Kazaa kicked them off their networks, leaving Morpheus pretty much screwed. They changed a few pictures, and originally presented none of the code to the public.

  20. The irony on BSA Asks Kids to Name Copyright Weasel · · Score: 1

  21. SCO and the times on An Objective Review of UnixWare 7.1.4 · · Score: 1, Insightful

Looking at those pricing numbers, and the [lack of significant] advantage UnixWare has over, say, everything else, it seems that SCO is still stuck back in the glory days of Unix, when it was the only choice to run web servers and such on. Considering SCO is a company on the edge, you think they could at least slash the prices.

  23. Re:Behind the Curtain: A Developer's Story on PS3 To Use Blu-Ray Technology · · Score: 1

Excess capacity? Two words: Square Enix. Squaresoft pretty much made the original PS with its release of FF7, and Sony will go out of its way to suck up to them as much as possible. Of course, it could also mean other companies will start using FMVs more frequently, or have incredibly large uncompressed soundtracks, etc.

So anything of a political nature is protected under the first amendment and is special? Sorry, that just doesn't make any sense. There shouldn't be any difference between making a political statement and, say, a statement about how much you hate cheese.

  25. It's not a parody on JibJab Sues for Fair Use of Right to Parody · · Score: 3, Interesting

It's political satire - they are not making a parody of the song itself. This use of the song is not protected in courts.
