As I was very fond of TradeWar and all the other types of RPG during my BBS days, I want to become one of the "judge", but the link/. has provided didn't give me info on how to JOIN IN THE FUN !
I really want to relive the FUN TIME I HAD during the text-based RPG period.
Can someone please help me, and tell me exactly how to join?

Kylix - The Pandora Box for Bloatware for Linux ?
on
More Kylix Information
·
· Score: 1
RAD is good. RAD is fab. RAD has all the rage.
But a RAD such as Kylix may spells trouble for Linux.
Not that Linux has no bloatwares of its own - netscape/mozilla and staroffices are two perfect examples, - but the easy-to-use RAD thingy like Kylix would inevitably introduces LOTS AND LOTS of fun-time programmers to Linux, and opens up the Pandora Box for Bloatwares that we all know too well how they have done to the Windoze arena.
My only hope is that the programmers in the Linux Camp are a better quality type, and that may cut down on the unnecessary bloats all of us are so darn tired of.
Just like the KFC's "Colonel Sander's 17 Secret Spices", and Coca Cola's Top Secret Locked-In-The-Vault Formula, this case for "Secret Sauce" smells like another episode for the Mad Magazine's Spy vs. Spy series.
Unfortunately, unlike the Mad Magazine's Spy Vs. Spy serial, there is no White Hat here.
Both sides are suing each others because of patents, and both sides are determined to milk that patent (aka Secret Sauces) to the fullest, and we, the consumers, will end up footing the bills (legal and all other things).
Sad, isn't it?
Sad to see that our tech-sphere has been invaded by the invertibrate-lawyers.
I certainly hope that such wonderful attitude (from people of both project to accept each others' point of views) can be spreaded to even MORE projects.
There are TOO MANY potentially very beneficial projects suffering unnecessarily difficulties (and even premature deaths) due to the unwillingness of project leaders to open up their projects to accomodate the viewpoints from others.
In the meantime, if anyone of you know of similar collaborative efforts are happening, whould you mind providing me/us the names/address/url of such projects, please?
Your idea of "Format" is fine enough, but the sad fact is, in order to create a "personal profile", today, there isn't such a thing to automate such process. That means, if someone wants to have his or her personal "persoanl profile", the person has to go through an almost endless loop of work to define his or her "taste".
Until there is a neuro-based semi-intelligent system which has the ability to "mimic" our taste, base on the songs we have previously chosen - and not just the artists, nor the format, per se - and chose the songs we like to hear, and arrange them to be played whenever and whereEVER we want to - then the "personal profiling" process would prove to be too much a hassle for the average Jane and Joe.
Thank you for providing the two links to the two interesting articles. But in actuality, I have read a related article LONG TIME AGO, something like in the late 80's, where someone speculated that the universe originally contained 22 dimentions, and some of them collapsed (for the lack of a better word) not long after the big bang. That leaves us with something like 14 dimensions, and four of which we are living in.
"Let us not forget that the wonderful
democracy of Athens had put Socrates
to death by poisoning after an entirely
democratic proceedings where he was found
guilty of impiety and corrupting the
minds of young citizens of Athens."
What you have described is known as the Tyranny Of The Majority, and things like this still happens today.
In many places of the world, people are still being punished for "violation" of one kind or another, no matter how "democratic" the society in which this "violation" has taken place is.
And in fact, there is ONE COUNTRY in Asia which has MADE THE TYRANNY OF MAJORITY its OFFICIAL STAND, and that country is Malaysia.
In Malaysia, the majority race GOT ALL KINDS of priviledges, while people from minority races have had their human rights violated AGAIN AND AGAIN, and all that, in Malaysia, is PERFECTLY LEGAL.
While no one is forced to consume poison against their will in Malaysia, everyone from the minority race groups have had suffered TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES because of the OFFICIAL TYRANNY OF THE MANORITY LAWS. Children from the minority groups are NOT permitted to attend university, even if they have scored MUCH HIGHER GRADES in their academic standing, as compared to children of the majority groups. Or, put it in other way, children from the majority race can get into university EVEN IF THEY HAVE FAILED in their academic studies, while children from the minority races are being KEPT OUT, even if they have scored better than those children from the majority races who are enjoying their status as "university educated scholars".
"The fact is that NASM is a mess from
a QA perspective. Don't blame McCabe"
Thank you for the comment. And now, would it be okay for you or anyone who knows more about this matter chip in your advices, comments and/or ideas on how to improve on the NASM, please ?
In many a third-world country, where a copy of a 5-client Win2000 cost almost the same as the annual salary of a general manager in a middle-size company - and we aren't counting the cost of all the apps.
So, in this context, if we have to do a comparison between Win2000 and open-source OS such as Linux, it'd surely be having a running title such as "To Be A Pirate, Or Not To Be ?"
And if _that's_ not enough, if you use Win2000 without any legal license - ie. to behave like a eye-patch wearing pirate - you run the risk of being prosecuted, and the fine would be at least TEN TIMES THE COST OF THE SOFTWARES you pirate.
That essentially means, in a third world country, if you run Win2000, you either look at forking a sum of money where you can pay a general manager for ONE WHOLE YEAR up front (to buy a legal copy), or, you run the risk of having your company computer confiscated (thus disrupting your company's day-to-day business activities), PLUS you'd be fined an amount that you could've hired TEN GENERAL MANAGERS FOR ONE WHOLE YEAR, at least.
Does _that_ count as a valid yardstick of comparing Win2000 vs. Linux ?
In at least two Asia-Pacific companies that I have personal contact with, the IT people will get fired if they use NON open-sourced OS in the company's computers.
Those two companies are not huge conglomerates, but they _are_ expanding.
With the availability of Linux in mainframe (from IBM) and with all the already available Linux distributions running in all sorts of workstations and such, I don't see any limit for those two Asia-Pacific companies in applying their current rules of using only open-sourced OS in their computers, for by the time these companies have expanded that they need to use mainframe (or RS-6000 and/or AS/400 series of workhorses) there will be options ready for them.
"Running Linux" may be a good book, but I think there ought to be yet another book that lead people AWAY from M$-Windows.
If I have the time, I would write that book, but (looking around the mess, and check the schedule) I am afraid I won't have that kind of free time until 2003 at the earliest.
But anyway, this is my proposal for the title for that new book :
Running AWAY from M$-Windows
If anyone is interested in writing such a book, they are FREE (as in freedom) to use that title.
Mandarin ("Hua Wen" or "Zhong Wen") is spelled M*A*N*D*A*R*I*N but Hemos spelt it Mandrin.
But anyway, what's the great hooha now to search for the "default" language for the Net?
I mean, if the Net survives for another 100 or even 100,000 years, things that we can't even begin to imagine today will come to their own conclusion, by themselves. Who cares if that "default language" is English or not? Maybe, it's a combination of both - that'll bring us yet another question - Do we call it "Manglish" or do we call it "Endarin" ?
Sorry, I do not understand what the hoots are all about.
Is there any use to compare Apple with Linux ?
I mean, there are similarities between Linux and Apple OS, and there are differences as well. Linux with the new Gnome (especially with the contribution from Easel) may look as slick as the Applie GUI, but Apple is MORE than an OS.
Apple is a combination of hardware and software. I am no brown nose, but still, I admire Steve Jobs for his vision.
The "cubes" from NExT and Apple wouldn't have been existed if not for Steve Jobs. The computer world would have been much less funner without Jobs.
Only if there is such person in the Linux camp.
I mean, Linux right now is like an old black-and-white movie. It takes a guy with great visions such as Steve Jobs to put colors in it.
"When all you have is a hammer, everything
else look like nails."
The axiom above is true for many real life situation, including programming.
If you are limited to only VB or G++ or vi or whatever, make the BEST of it.
After all, you are in the class to LEARN something, might as well do you best LEARNING THE PROPER WAY TO DO THINGS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
VB or vi or G++ or whatever are just tools. You do not have to be attached to ONE SPECIFIC TOOL. What is MOST important is the SKILL TO CREATE, and that skill should NEVER be limited to any specific tool. You can "graduate" from using M$ stuffs, but as long as you have that skill to create newer and better things, you can always migrate to OTHER KINDS of tools available.
Hope all of you can glean the skill to create despite the obstacles the power-that-be want to throw at you.
Haven't have the time to check if the story is true or not, but if it is, then, there is _still_ hope for integrity and guts in the cyber arena.
There have been too many sell-outs in the Net. Our privacy means nothing to the many purveyors with various intentions, and then there are "people" with "good intentions" out there who want to "prevent us from hurting ourselves" by reading things that "aren't suitable for us".
The Net is becoming more and more like the world out there - that is, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING, AND WE OUGHTTA THANKS THE BIG BROTHER BECAUSE HE IS PROTECTING US FROM ANY HARM.
If Akamai is doing what the story has stated, then, good for them !! And I hope that more people will do similar courageous things to make the lives of those people with "good intentions" as miserable as possible.
What we have here is a chip that should have been 1.5 Ghz, that was overclocked to run at 2 Ghz. What we have here is also a chip that won't get onto your desk or mine for another 6 - 12 months, and by the time we can get it, I don't think the chip can be overclocked anymore.
In other words, Intel is showing us a chip that they won't sell to us, period.
The subject of the article is "Lying with Pixels", and what is dangerous is not _ONLY_ the erasing part, but also the possibility of "adding on" what-was-not-there !
Just imagine, if the power-that-be (big brother ?) want to frame somebody, they can get a footage of some horrible crime, and then insert the image of that poor fella into the whole thing, make it so real that it works from all camera and/or light angles, with shadows and all the other FXs !!

Actually, the answer is over twenty thousand such events occur every second in every living CELL of that living organism.
That's pretty amazing, isn't it ?!

On M$ case, you asked :
"What are we missing? What am I missing?"
So, here is the answer -
1. Bugs
2. Bloatedware
3. Crappy programs that crashes.
I am afraid "NOBODY MOVE !" isn't quite enough.
If someone drops the 5-atoms computer, it then should be "NOBODY BREATH !"
