Actually the order came from Exodus Communications, who provides their bandwidth. They're having problems finding enough money to cover their costs so they've asked Slashdot to cut back on bandwidth and to bring in more money by having the editors whore themselves out. Hope that clears things up.
Let me rephrase that. Those were 5,000 innocent people. But sure, while we're at it, why not make our military secrets public knowledge so we don't risk the possibility of censorship? Sure, there's no good reason that you or I would want that, but hey, we wouldn't want to censor anything, would we? Who cares that there's no good reason to make the information public but the information being freely available puts people at risk. Try telling that to the loved ones of someone who died in those terrorist attacks and tell them that some information you don't need is worth the death of that person. To attempt to put a value on people, saying 5,000 is worth the information is simply absurd and cruel. These are innocent people, not even soldiers or military personnel. It's easy to be inhuman about it living secluded in your basement but it isn't when you've lost someone in such an attack. You're out of your mind if you can justify putting more than 270 million people at a significantly greater risk for useless information.
And don't say put greater limits on who has access to such information. It won't work. We didn't suspect the hijackers until after the deed because they lived in cells and carried out apparently normal lives. Either you shut off access to the information or you don't, there is no middle ground. This is the right thing, like it or not.
