PHP has a reputation for being "easy", and I guess perl just isn't viewed as sexy by new web developers.

I use mod_perl with TT2, adding Class::DBI and a few other goodies, I absolutely love it. And yes, I would rather go back to the mind-numbing frustration of Weblogic (not saying anything about J2EE in general here, just Weblogic) than touch PHP... but then, we all have our preferences.

But no, I don't think the term "easier" applies here.

My impression is that completely bringing down something as large as one of the biggest IRC networks would be a somewhat unprecedented success, for these "hackers" (the term does get thrown around rather loosely, doesn't it? I still think of myself as a perl hacker...); it is just highly unlikely that the other networks will be left alone after this. Whether if the same people shift their focus, or others try to copy or outdo them, or if that just becomes the thing to do if you are a 1337 h4>0r.

"Quality" is a very nebulous term. There are things that postgres does better than Oracle. Often it's when Oracly is just overkill (usually by a long shot) and postgres is just easier to set up and manage. Also has neat features like regular expressions.

The only reason I prefer Oracle to postgres (as a developer) for large(er) projects is that pgAdminII is just no SQL Navigator.
