PHP has a reputation for being "easy", and I guess perl just isn't viewed as sexy by new web developers.
I use mod_perl with TT2, adding Class::DBI and a few other goodies, I absolutely love it. And yes, I would rather go back to the mind-numbing frustration of Weblogic (not saying anything about J2EE in general here, just Weblogic) than touch PHP... but then, we all have our preferences.
But no, I don't think the term "easier" applies here.

Ok, one of the largest IRC networks (and as I understand it, the difference isn't that big, but I haven't seen any recent numbers).
My impression is that completely bringing down something as large as one of the biggest IRC networks would be a somewhat unprecedented success, for these "hackers" (the term does get thrown around rather loosely, doesn't it? I still think of myself as a perl hacker...); it is just highly unlikely that the other networks will be left alone after this. Whether if the same people shift their focus, or others try to copy or outdo them, or if that just becomes the thing to do if you are a 1337 h4>0r.
General consensus around the parts i hang out seems to be that losing DALnet wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Hm, some group of people is attacking the largest IRC network, presumably with the intention of bringing it down completely. Should they succeed, how good is that really for the other IRC networks?

hm, doesn't look like we retarded linux fuckers will be playing this one.
but are you saying that Postgres is a better quality database than Oracle?
"Quality" is a very nebulous term. There are things that postgres does better than Oracle. Often it's when Oracly is just overkill (usually by a long shot) and postgres is just easier to set up and manage. Also has neat features like regular expressions.
The only reason I prefer Oracle to postgres (as a developer) for large(er) projects is that pgAdminII is just no SQL Navigator.
Speaking of which, what genious decided that Windows Media Player should no longer do this in the later versions? I still haven't figured out how to make that damn thing pause in full-screen mode; and hey, I don't have any problems using Xine.
Who is this person? All I see is a page and a half of semi-coherent rambling by someone I've never heard of. Who apparently doesn't like mplayer and Xine - just a fascinating read.
Google claims to have 3,083,324,652 pages indexed - surely there's something better in there than this?
I'm sure you'll get a lot of this, but there is a lot more out there than science fiction; if you've read all of SF already, maybe it's time to try something new?
Shouldn't we be past the "Ooh, another place Linux is being used! Hooray!" phase by now?
Shouldn't we be past the "telling us what phase we should be in" phase by now? I really don't see how nagging and whining is "news for nerds, stuff that matters"
far as I can see it's mostly just a precaution. rule of thumb:
running out of ram and having to swap == bad running out of swap == very, very double plus ungood
since disc is cheap, it's easy enough to allocate a lot of swap, but if you are actually using it, then you might look into buying some more ram.
of course I could be completely wrong.
Of course I am sure that the moderation gendarmes (or harpies... yeah, probably moderation harpies) will descend on us with mighty vengeance for heretically straying away from the true, blessed path, which is "The Topic"
I don't necessarily know much about these things, but a 2 on cable (scifi) is a lot better than a 2.4 on a network such as Fox. They just don't see that many viewers on basic cable. At least that's how I understand these things.
I resent that someone coming here for a few years sending half their meagerly pay back to the home country that I have to be competing with for jobs based on "years of experience" and "number of full-cycle projects you've been on".
Ok, refugee/asylee (well, the INS seems to think that's a word) status is a bit different from a visa, and I'm sorry, but you just don't get to resent things based on this.
You seem to have assimilated American culture rather well - why shouldn't you compete with others trying to do the same thing you have done, based on rather reasonable criteria? Why are you somehow different?
btw, out of the H1B's I know, none send half their salary back to the home country, nor is that wage something you could call meager.

(not that I don't think this card is a loud and noisy waste of money - I still have my $300 GeForce3, and boy does that make vi look great!)

Oh shut the fuck up. Even though I agree with what you said, please do.

Oh yeah, Oracle just shines there. In any case, postgres 7.3 took me about 20 minutes to set up, don't know what everyone's bitching about.

Don't get me wrong, mplayer is a pain in the ass to use, but then we all arleady knew this. Though personally, I quite like Xine...

To be fair, I don't think the poster was saying anything about prices, but rather the ability to extend the funcionality of a product.
I don't see why not.

No, I'm sure it was Solaris that brought linux to the masses.
There's this new crazy idea, not sure if you've heard about it - optical storage?
RAID-10 is unecessary for pr0n, RAID 5 does just fine, and gives you 600GB for $720.

I just recently bought myself a 6 120GB drive array, for $123 apiece. That's two months of divx :)

well, took me about 10 years (from working visa to citizenship), and I was fairly lucky.
I am not getting into the rest of the argument, but why do I find these statements so very, very hard to stomach?
The picture of this warm and cuddly NSA "simpley checking things out" just somehow doesn't materialize.
