  1. I got one of these on 3 Major HD Makers Recalling Drives? [UPDATED] · · Score: 1

I got it from U a company called Upgrade Solutions. They sold me a Maxtor 80 GB 5400rpm ata100 and it registered half capacity. The vendor told me they had a whole bunch of bad drives from Maxtor as well as Seagate (sorry guys) and that they would send me a replacement because this was a wide-spread problem. dammit, when will they shit the thing so i can have my xbox up and running? (heh)

    1) learn the difference betweeen an argument and a statement. an argument has a thesis, a statement is a descriptor. 2) its not my opinion that lobbyists control congress. it's fact. go read a book that doesn't have anything to do with computers.

they call in culturally institutionalized racism. when you link 7-11 and India this way it seems really sketchy. The quivalent of walking down the street in NYC with a Klan robe on.

i resent the flamebait tag. this is a real opinion, shared by many people worldwide and especially in western countries where lobbyists have more power than voters, by a LONG shot. and if M$ isn 't one of the biggest lobbyists in DC I will eat my hat

what happens when countries with M$ systems are not able to interoperate with OSS systems? As we watch corporations continue to manipulate governments and essentially own the future of citizens through no-bid contracts and the like, will it eventually come to a head? You think you have a senator - what you have is a corporate liason.

  8. games are not helping gamers in all areas on Video Games Boost Visual Skills · · Score: 1

Yes, maybe gaming increases some perceptual and spacial skills - hey, maybe even some kinesthetic skills... but does the increase of these skills/abilities as a result of gaming have an inverse relationship to the ability of the gamer to get laid? (and chokin' the chicken to Dead or Alive does NOT count.)

  10. i know a lot about all of this... on Microsoft's Software Philanthropy: The Goodwill Ploy · · Score: 5, Insightful

I work for a non-profit org that was, in its startup, bankrolled by Microsoft (and some others) in a very, very big way. What I can tell you is that our relationship with Microsoft is currently fluid (as they are nearing the end of their promised obligation to us). So the org I work for is a non-profit that deal specifically with technology in the non-profit sector. I am in a unique position, I get to see many intertesting interactions. But the one that impacts me the most is that, in many cases, the free software that orgs get from Microsoft and other corporate donors is often the only software they can get, and in many cases, the best for their needs. The main need here, which the technology community and most slashdotters don't consider, is that non-profits are not only on the ropes in terms of the technology they have, but supporting and maintaining that technology is a huge problem too. If you want to see a better presence for open source in the non profit community, you need to support nonprofdits with free or extremely cheap support and training on open source solutions. non-profit professionals, like most non-techs, dont want to be technology experts. they are busy feeding people, helping them get off of drugs, and rebuilding the faces of little kids with deformities. take it from me, this is what i do for a living

  11. and as for pro-tools on Cheap Audio Production · · Score: 2, Insightful

There are a couple of ways you can approach the idea of recorded music. As a musician, youc an either try to make it sound as close as possible to a live performace as possible - or you can take the flexibility and creative potential afforded by technology and create something that reflects a particular refinement of vision, if not an accurate reproduction of live performance. As a recording artist and technologist, I can see it both ways.

  12. here is the thing on Cheap Audio Production · · Score: 2, Interesting

Passing the saivngs on to the consumer is a realtive issue. There are records youc an buy that were recorded on a traditional studio setup but which are somehow still only $8 from your local independent record store. Conversely, you can have items like "Bread You Off," from the latest Roots record - this song alone cost $300k - why? the licensing for the samples. a-ha! The truth is that there are way more players taking their cut than just the labels and the bands. take it from someone who knows!

  13. Decontextualization, The myth of history on Do Digital Photos Endanger History? · · Score: 1

I find it hard to discuss the connections between photographs, or any media form for that matter, and what we vaguely and define as 'history.' The relevance of digital imagin media versus film photography is one that becomes largely irrelevant when put in a proper, rich epistemological context. Thanks, I'm here all week.
