  1. sonic bath of death on Star Trek: Enterprise in Danger of Being Cancelled · · Score: 1

I eagerly watched the first episode with unbridled anticipation. It was to be the dawn of old era in the Star Trek universe. The plot was chugging along with a few doses of intrigue and suddenly knee deep in vulcan nipples. Heck, at the time I was more than enthused with the scene. But, immediately after I'm left think "WTF!?"

Star Trek isn't supposed to be like the rest of mainstream survivor/fear factor smut, it's supposed to be alternate dimensions, time travel, omnipotent aliens, and intra-galactic battles brain candy. On the other hand, maybe the green babe in TOS was considered racy back in the 60's? Needless to say that was the first and last episode I fully watched. The rest only required 2 minutes to tell the plot sucked.

I too have been at a dot com for about two years now, and it seems that every day a new "revenue stream" is thought up. As the head sys admin working with a skeleton IT team the responsibility is much greater while job satisfaction has tanked. Not that I cringe at a hard days work, but more and more of what I do is in support of the latest crazy scheme to generate another dollar. Lately I have been yearning of the pre dot com days I spent at an ivy league university where my pay was half what it is now, but the cutting edge technology and technical challenges were teeming. Now, what's it all for? Making my 30 something CE0 rich is not the mark I want to leave on society.

I know I can't rely on you to protect me and my family and the american way of life, that's why I'm thankful to have a government that is concerned with national security and a military to make the sacrifice that numbnuts like you wouldn't dream of making, except to bitch about not being able to connect to a site in denmark to download your porn.

  12. DOD has a long road ahead on U.S. Gov't Sponsors InfoSec Defense Training · · Score: 1, Interesting

Considering the fact that the DOD is a monster beauracracy with more security holes that swiss cheese, the task of pinning down info sec is monumental. The manpower required to really get the job would be 10 fold the proposed graduating class. As a former member of Air Force communications squadron, I cringe when thinking about the lack of sophistication involved in managing their networks. NT is embraced as the desktop OS of choice but so is it amongst a majority of large corporations. The difference is the backend, also NT based couple with Novell, or so it was 5 years ago. Network outages were common place, I remember one time email and internet access being down the entire day! I wasn't behind the scenes to give actual specifics, but I was close enough to say it was a two bit operation. Take into account that this sort of operation is found in every squadron (20 or so) on each base and we at the communication squadron were supposed to be the experts. Now take this scenario and apply it to the rest of the bases throughout the world and don't forget to factor in the Army, Navy, Marines, and you end up with a nightmare of a situation.

Hell, I must have put up 5 different sites in the last few years just because it was cool to make and send to friends. But, I haven't touched html or the like in the last year. Mainly because I really have nothing worthwhile to put up (except some baby pics). Gone are the days of cruising the web just to find the "cool site of the day". Today the majority of internet use has some purpose - news, research, porn,....not necessarily in that order.

An advanced user merely enjoys his trade and understands that it took years of hard work to get there and DOES NOT mock those who are still learning the intricacies of the OS (ideally).
