You mean as a choice from the list of users? Showing that list is horrible from a security perspective, just have it display username and password fields.
Actually, if you have Jaguar, you can log in as any user- even one not shown in the list- by clicking on "Other." This will, of course, let you log in as root.
I really hope Apple decides to release something like the old eMate. I have one, and it's great- it's got a nice big screen, and the option to use the keyboard or handwriting recognition for text input. It can even surf the net (with a 28.8 modem, no less)! A portable device running OS X aimed at the education market really seems like a great idea. I know that my school, for one, wouldn't even consider buying any of its students 'real' laptops, but at an affordable price, they might look into these.
If anyone's interested, I just ported this to Mac OS X, so you can use this WM with XDarwin. You need Xfree86 installed (you can get it from Fink).
Untar and ungzip the package. cd to the source directory. With your favorite editor, edit utils/Makefile.am by deleting the reference to minivol on the bin_PROGRAMS line, and removing the minivol_SOURCES line. Run automake,./configure, make and make install. Make the appropriate modifications to ~/.xinitrc.
I've used Chimera- actually, I still have it installed now, but it's still not stable enough for me. When I can use it for a day without it crashing (like IE), I'll make the switch.
The major detractor was the user interface, since it didn't feel like a Windows application.
This is one of the major reasons that I use IE on Mac OS X. The browser just doesn't look or feel like any of the other applications I have, which all use the Aqua widgets and so have the same functionality.
I don't have any Bluetooth-using appliances. The closest thing is my Palm m100, which doesn't (AFAIK) support expansion like this. The wires and clutter- on my desk or anyone else's- aren't going to go away for at least another year, while companies update their stuff so it works with Bluetooth. When they all do, though, it'll be sweet!
The lack of OS X-looking interface elements in Netscape is probably the biggest reason I still use IE. I don't have a very large "soft spot" for apps that think their own (slower, uglier) widgets are better than that of the OS that they're running on. This should be a good Mozilla-based remedy to that. (Besides the widgets, Netscape is just too bloated with the IM module, Composer, etc... I have seperate apps to do all of that stuff already, and they're better.)
Speaking of the LoTR books, does The Hobbit come before The Fellowship of the Ring? I think I'll start to read the books, but I'll probably be incredibly confused if I read them out of order:)

Please, don't give M$ any ideas...

Office 200? Wow, M$ has been around a lot longer than I thought!
Just type cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/ fink login at the shell prompt, type <return> for a password, and you should be set.
I guess that's why they renamed it "Sherlock 3" and are releasing it with Jaguar :-)
You can't grep a dead tree.
Real Media? What's that?
</OS X User>

Is anyone having any luck downloading the PDF version? The link to http://www.rons.net.cn/english/FSM/english/FSM/iss ue01/pdf isn't working; seems to be a missing directory.

Maybe I can actually pick a distribution now! 'Course, I have Mac OS X, which is a lot like Linux, but I suppose this will be handy just the same.
How about an official Slashdot ID card? That'd be pretty cool, IMHO.
Let's hope this gives a boost to zero-emission vehicles' development...
