This would be right on the money if all, or even the majority of outsourced jobs were programming jobs. But it would seem that they aren't limited to that. Besides, who says outsourcing is bad. I'm going there, I needed a cusine change anyway.:)
Software being free makes -our- job easier. We're able to not start from scratch every time we sit down to write code. We don't have to pay for expensive OSes and compilers. I learned to program using gcc on my linux partition because the proprietary compilers were too expensive for a kid in high school.;)
If you're a programmer that doesn't work at google or microsoft, then you are probably getting shit on. They expect alot and know very little. We end up wearing all the hats, which limits the amount of time we could be putting into actually getting work done.
C# -is- a decent language, and it'll have it's place. But Java had a headstart on Java, and by the time MS started their.NET stuff they were competing with a platform that was already being used in alot of companies.
Java is -the- platform right now. If you think that C# and.NET is where the future is, maybe you need to get your head your of the sand. They aren't evil, wrong, or stupid. Just late.
However, for each of the psychological items, she also asked when the Internet users first experienced their symptoms and found that onset of psychological symptoms "clearly preceded Internet use," at a range of five to 22 years.
Yeah, you are missing something. The price for the OS is relatively cheaper there. Would be a great place to buy it for cheap and offer it in other countries, eh? By crippling it, they ensure people get what they pay for.
Someone else suggested they "cripple" it by making it Thai only. I think that's a good idea. But hey, the worse Windows is there the better chance they'll switch to Linux instead.
How did the parent post manage to get rated Interesting? I've only had my Palm crash once or twice, and it was because of a misbehaving program I downloaded and was trying out. And in no situation did I -ever- lose data. It's more reliable most the servers I've seen.:P
Apparently, it was just a miscommunication. After reading the comments on that article, I noticed Paul Thurott says that the virus originated from a Unix mail server. He apologized for the way it was worded.
Before getting out the tar and feathers, remember that we're just as bad about posting before knowing all the facts.;)
I've seen a bunch of posts like this, and this seems as good a place to reply as any.
People keep saying "we" would never write a -Windows- virus, it couldn't have possibly been "us". There are so many visitors to this site, not all of which have decideded to only use opensource software, run linux on all of their boxes, and generally adhere to the idealistic hacker's ethic. In all reality, the author of this virus could easily and probably is a Slashdot reader.
Cracking systems is a good thing, it points out vulneribilities. It would have been better if they left a README.hacked file on the machine, that showed what they changed and how they did it. Since they didn't, I can only assume they did it for less than altruistic reasons.;)
How in the world did you go from saying he had a lack of evidence to support his claim to stating that he needs to read the article?:P
It's like a canned flame. RTFA(tm)
Damn straight. Screw suing her, she needs to do some hard time. Only 160 million? Hah! That's nothing in comparison to the damages the record companies incurred by her collection.
Let's ignore the fact that she probably didn't know her files were being shared. It's funny how file sharing programs neglect to tell you about that in most cases. The average user has no idea that the RIAA even cares that they exist. But hey, let's burn them at the stake. They deserve it for being evil copyright violators.
I'd like to give a big fuck you to anyone on the RIAA's side. I'm glad you haven't let common sense get in the way of your opinion.
This person sounds like a great parent. Knowing what your kids are doing is -not- spying on them. There are many ways of knowing. If they are used to being open with you abou their activities and trust you not to go nuts on them for every little thing, you'd be surprised.
Bittorent works by making everyone who downloads part of the "distribution network." By leaving the client open you are making the download go faster for everyone. I suppose this is kind of a utilitatian concept, but hey.. Slashdot readers are supposed to be idealistic, right? I'll leave mine open, and hopefully you will too.
I'm pretty sure the only difference between HTTP and FTP is the connection and handling of transfers. TCP ends up doing the actual file transfer. Write an FTP and HTTP server some time.
I'm not sure if this has already been said, but I hadn't seen it yet.:)

They will take over the world by offering free services with little to no advertisements! Beating out their competition with innovation!
And they say all they want is to "organize the world's information and make it universally useful and accessible."
HAH! That's just another way of saying "take over the world."
Gone? Are you sure?

"XP reloaded" is supposed to be a seperate release, after SP2 is out. I find it funny that it's also been called "shorthorn" by some people inside MS.
Alright, MS is finally working on security. It's time for us to get working on UIs.
The average person has no fucking clue what a "sco" is, and don't care. They barely know what Linux is, and they usually think RedHat owns it.
Karma Whore! Karma Whore!
Dirty little Karma Whore!
12-Cell battery with Subwoofer for incredible sound.
:)
This is where it really stands out. No one else has ever thought to put a subwooder in the battery. They need to pay someone to proofread.

I don't know much about Tesla. But the little I do know is that most of his work was largely ignored. I hope the same can't be said about Linus.

But since we're already be paying for media we copy, that means copying is now legal right?
Otherwise, we're paying for the media twice.

Did you guys go look at it? I swear, they attempted to copy news.google.com. "Clone and extend" or something like that, right?

when the download is complete!

He just said it wasn't even that widely read in Canada.

I'm not sure if this has already been said, but I hadn't seen it yet.
It's sad that you even have to do that. IE should be uninstallable.
Umm. I'm pretty sure you are about as off-topic as you can get. Lucky I don't have mod points right now. :P
